You do realize that normally a reporter doesn't write the headlines to a story, his editor does. Right?

Nope.. didn't know that.. still don't know it for sure..

You know it for sure, you just want to pass it off.

It's been that way in the newspaper business for a hundred years. The sections editor desk writes the headline.

Just bank it.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Well, not necessarily ballpeen.... but in most cases, yeah an editor composes the headline because he/she is the one who has to lay out the page, and knows what kind of space he/she is dealing with.

But anyways you guys keep arguing about who writes the freakin' headlines.

You're correct. That was one of the first things learned in any journalism course. The writers are responsible for the content, but the copy editor is responsible for the headline. This is the case for most newspapers, from big city tabloids to podunk high school newspapers.

There are many reasons to be upset with Grossi, but this isn't one of them. Let it go.

Well Shep.. Let's chalk this up to we aren't going to agree on this.. I think Grossi is a sensationalizing gasbag, and at least in this instance you don't agree...

I agree with you take on reporters Daman, but the headline thing isn't the issue.

Selective reporting is.

The problem with the article is he failed to add that DA was getting reps with the first team also.
Now one would have to wonder if the headline would have been the same if he would have used the entire discussion with Mangini.

He tried to lead everyone into thinking that BQ was the early winner of the competition and that DA would have to do something to get first team reps , when it was noted that both were getting equal reps , it's just that BQ got to go first.

Whoohoo, Brady wins the compitition, ooops, he just won the chance to go first.

How convienent he forgot to add that one paragraph, smells like Tony's normal agenda.

Didn't he also forget to add in that DA was in camp during the offseason, when reporting that BQ was there all year working with Daboll ?

Just report the facts Tony , leave your agenda at home.

That is the ONLY thing I've ever asked of any reporter.. and as a general rule, that's the ONLY thing I rarely get...

I have a feeling Quinn will start, but hope we end up keeping DA too.

When looking at our team's QB injuries since we've returned, I am too.

You know the quote about how there's no atheists in foxholes? There's no '2QB's = no QB' opinions when ligaments tear.

If we're 5-3 and BQ goes down I'll eat these words... but I disagree.

We aren't going to the playoffs, with Quinn or DA or both this year... and we won't have them both next year... so why not get rid of DA (If he's the one to go) while he still has some semblence of value? Assuming Quinn is the starter and if he plays all year we go 7-9 if he gets hurt midway and DA isn't there to backup, we go 5-11... Who cares if we can get decent compensation for next years draft for DA now?

The time to move Anderson past us by when the Vikes went after Rosenfels.

At this point, Anderson has more value to us than he would in terms of bringing back a 2nd day draft pick.

As a starter, he's a borderline guy. As a backup, he's one of the best, if not THE best in the league.

Agreed. Keep him this year as a backup, then trade him next year for a 2nd day pick and clear up a bunch of cap room.

not only that.....but, let's say Quinn does well....but gets injured for a couple games at some point.

if DA fills in well, he very well could fetch us a first day pick...his value easily could escalate as easily as it fell.

Actually the time past us by when he was a tendered RFA and supposedly we had one team hot to sign him - all be it rumored the Ravens via the Cowboys.

That would have worked out GREAT for us. We would have received a 1st n 3rd in a draft that we did not have a pick until the 4th round.

We would have had BQ in there learning. And maybe us picking up Carr as the backup not the Giants.

We would have had the Ravens relying on DA as their QB and not picking Flacco who I feel is finally the QB they have been seeking - a more accurate mobile DA.

That to me was a clear cut opportunity that passed us by.

That's if the rumor was true.. we'll probably never know for sure.. Example, look at all the rumors that were circling this past draft..

Terry Pluto's Talkin' ... about Quinn's rising status with Browns

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- What I believe about the Browns quarterback situation...

1. I believe every time Eric Mangini says something such as naming Brady Quinn to practice with the first string -- even in voluntary workouts -- the new Browns coach is sending a message.

2. I believe the first message is exactly what the coach said: "[Quinn] has done a really outstanding job in the off-season program." He likes Quinn's work ethic, his football mind and his willingness to learn a new system.

3. I believe Mangini also was talking to Derek Anderson when the coach said: "Not that Derek hasn't done well, but [Quinn] has the edge, so he took the first reps. ... There is no overwhelming significance to that." He's telling Anderson that he still could start, but the coach is looking for something more.

4. I believe that so far, Mangini prefers Quinn. He wants Quinn to know that. He also wants Anderson to know that -- which is why he seemed almost anxious to discuss the topic at his press conference Thursday. In the past, Mangini seemed to be trying to win an award for making the most vague, meaningless comments about his quarterbacks. Not this time.

5. I believe the coaches may still be impressed by Anderson, at least at some level. Mangini may be using the praise of Quinn to light a fire under Anderson, who is a very good person but a man who rarely shows much emotion. No doubt that Anderson has a stronger arm than Quinn, but if arm strength meant stardom Jeff George would be in the Hall of Fame. So much more is part of the QB position besides heaving the ball downfield.

6. I believe the Browns had no serious intention of trading Quinn. I believe they listened to offers for the Notre Dame quarterback, as they should. Maybe a team would make a ridiculous trade.

7. I believe the Browns wanted other teams to think they might deal Quinn, because the Browns wanted to trade down from the No. 5 pick. If trading Quinn was a possibility, then so was drafting USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. Enough teams thought the Browns might grab Sanchez that the Browns were able to dump out of a high pick, get the player they wanted at No. 21 in Alex Mack, and added some veterans who should start in safety Abram Elam and defensive end Kenyon Coleman. They also picked up linebacker Dave Veikune in the second round, and a couple of sixth-rounders, too.

8. I believe Quinn will end up starting. I believe that the more the coaches work with him, the more they will appreciate his approach to the game. I believe they are building a ball-control offense that fits Quinn. I believe they may keep Anderson as a backup, because quarterbacks do get hurt. I believe I could be wrong about all this, but I doubt it.

better??? .. being a journymen for 10 years would be better ... this WILL turn ALOT BETTER .....

DnD .... Pluto KNOWS ... as does JEANNIE ... and BQ .. and DA .... and EVERYONE else that is paying attention to what is really happening ...

ALL SIGNS at EVERY TURN point to BQ ... folks like Loyal and the "witch is dead" are just not ready to admit it ... but u gotta remember sumptin ..

they may not admit it at the end of Nov when DA's only taken 7 snaps and thrown 3 passes in a mop up role against the Bungles in week 3 ... they'll still point to that as a SURE SIGN that DA is da man ..

and all they'll be talking about is how great he looked and he completed 66% of his passes for 53 yards and a TD .. and what a great pass the TD was .... and no way that BQ could have made it ... they will fail to mention that he threw a 2nd TD to the Bungles on his 3rd pass ... they'll say the game was over so it did not matter ... that he was just trying to make things happen when he had his opportunity ..... they'll blame the 3nd pass on the wind, the WR and the OL ..

How will the Browns ever know what they have in Quinn if he does not start?

This season will be the ideal time for Quinn to start and gain experience and show what he has. If he can deliver the long ball with accuracy, he should be able to keep the starting job....jmho...mac
