Sometimes we get so caught up in the negative stories, it's good to read a positive one.

Quote:

After being drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2012, Ryan Broyles signed a $3.68 million rookie deal that included $1.42 million in guarantees.

The wide receiver didn't really go out and blow any of his money though, as a matter of fact, he did the opposite. The second-round pick still owns the 2005 Chevy Trailblazer he drove in college.

And if that's not frugal enough for you, the 27-year-old told ESPN.com this week that he and his wife live on an annual budget of $60,000.

To put that in perspective, Broyles' rookie contract averages out to $919,625 a year.

The $60,000 budget was made because Broyles has plans for the rest of his money.

"Then you know how much you can invest, how risky you can be," Broyles said.

The receiver, who's headed into the final year of his rookie deal, wasn't sure if $60,000 would be enough, but apparently, it's worked out just fine.

"When I was hitting the same budget over three, four, five months, it was all right, this is what your budget is and I had some spending money," Broyles said.

Broyles became obsessed with investing after talking to a financial adviser following the 2012 NFL Draft.

After signing his contract, Broyles figured out what he could live on and then invested the rest.

"I didn't hold myself back at all on those terms. That's what I tell people when they want to start to invest," Broyles said. "I tell them to live your life and see where you stand and then pull back. Don't pull back without even knowing."

Broyles has battled injuries for most of his short career and if things in the NFL don't end up working out, it sounds like Broyles will be just fine.

Smart guy. I hope more pro athletes look to his example.

They can either spend lavishly and live like a king for a few years or live on a budget and live like a prince forever. Unfortunately, most aren't choosing the latter.

I kinda feel that's how I'd be if I was hit with a hefty wad of frogskins.

Still drive my same Subaru, what little shopping I'd do would all be at the same stores as I currently shop and so forth.

I respect what all Broyles has done. Smart kid. No Shaquille like bankruptcy ending in his future!!

If I made almost a million a year, and was uncertain how long that was going to last, I can't say that I would live on $60K a year but I think I could live quite nice on about $150K.. still leaving me a nice chunk to put away every year.

smart guy .... he still makes more than I do haha, but I admire his frugality and forward thinking

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Not that it matters, because he deserves credit for how he's managing his money - but if he's living on a budget of $60k/year that equates to $100k-$120k gross depending on what is taken out of his check for taxes, etc...I hope he can live on that in Detroit. It might be harder in SF or Seattle with the cost of living differences. Like I said though, kudos to him for being a responsible adult financially!

I'd really like to read more stories about players that do it this way.. Very smart...
