Ohio woman gets out of parking ticket because of missing comma MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - Ohio's 12th District Court of Appeals ruled in favor of punctuation and sanity, according to reports by The Washington Post . On June 22, Andrea Cammelleri won her appeal against the Village of West Jefferson, Ohio, which was centered around none other than the comma. Cammelleri's case for proper punctuation , which lasted more than a year, all started when she was cited for parking her pickup truck on a street in West Jefferson, Ohio. Cammelleri parked her car in an area that banned parking "any motor vehicle camper, trailer, farm implemented and/or non-motorized vehicle" for more than 24 hours. Apparently, the ordinance's error was the absence of a comma, which would separate motor vehicle and camper as two different objects. Cammelleri didn't consider her truck to be any of the prohibited vehicles listed in the ordinance, and argued in court that "the ordinance did not apply because the language prohibits a motor vehicle camper from being parked on the street for an extended period of time." Judge Robert A. Hendrickson of the Middletown court ultimately decided in favor of the punctuation-conscious appellant, as outlined in his decision. "By utilizing rules of grammar and employing the common meaning of terms, 'motor vehicle camper' has a clear definition that does not produce an absurd result," the decision said. "If the village desires a different reading, it should amend the ordinance and insert a comma between the phrase 'motor vehicle' and the word 'camper.'"

Good, she should have won. I'm so sick of seeing the blatant misuse of comma's and apostrophe's.

Damn shame our Supreme Court interprets intention instead of what's actually written.

When it comes to arenas of religion and politics, even the clearest of intents is up for varying interpretations. It's just human nature.

That is why laws should be written in as plain language as possible. If you've ever noticed, the Bill of Rights gives almost no room for opinionated objections, even though some still do. I don't want system of laws where our courts are trying to determine what the meaning of "is" is. The last obummercare battle was about the word "states", and if the original document actually meant "state" or "states". The ruling basically said that the court understood the original meaning of the law, and ruled as to that understanding. They should have ruled as to how the law was written. The after market explanation of what was intended in the law should have been disregarded.

Good for her?
Man this board is certainly enlightening in a multitude of ways in regards to human character. Is anyone really that stupid to misinterpret that sign?
I started researching sentences w/out commas. Here are a couple of funny ones:
"Have some respect for the victims ***hole."
At a medical office....Visit reason: "Unable to eat diarrhea."
"Rachel Ray finds inspiration in cooking her family and her dog."

On the importance of punctuation:
1. "It's time to eat Grandma." 2. "It's time to eat, Grandma."
"too many notes, not enough music-"

She used a punctuation nuance to get out of a parking ticket, it's like she used it to get away with murder or rape.. let's keep things in perspective.

Did you not read what I wrote after that? You don't see any semblance of humor in it? If not, read Milk's observation. Perhaps you will get it??? Lighten up, Francis.

I'm glad somebody got over on them. West Jefferson is a frickin' speed trap. The cops lay in wait to nail people where the speed limit abruptly drops from 55 to 50 to 35 while still on what appears to be a country road. They double dip on the fines. I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but a lot of people complained.
And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul. - John Muir

It's okay, man. Mixed messages in my first post. I had a BS week, too. Read all these stupid articles about how teachers have it made and so much time off. Well, I took one class from 8:00 to 4:00 all week and another from 7:00 to 9:00. All kinds of travel time. Thousands and thousands of dollars. This has been going on almost all summer. Yeah, teachers have it made....

Vers, you obviously take your calling very seriously. Unfortunately there are some that don't.. I'm not going to get into percentages but the ones who don't give a bad name to those who do... it's like that with a lot of professions and groups of people..
I've been in construction for 23 years.... always tried to do a good job for a fair profit... and most of the people I know in the business feel the same.. but the reputation is that contractors will overcharge you, cut corners, and screw you the minute you turn away if you aren't careful... it's a shame really.

Ok,
Try reading that second amendment again. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. It seems rather clear cut to me.

Good points. To some extent, I guess we are all guilty of profiling.
Categorizing and classification are essential scientific skills, but can also be used in detrimental means.
