So we usually have this thread. I'm just going to copy Excl's comments from last year's thread and not bother to update for this year's trades/picks, but the guidelines are the same. Well it's time to go back and redo everything the way you would have done it. Then we throw this thread into liquid nitrogen, come back in 3-years and laugh at everybody who was adamant we pick so and so at #4 when they busted out 2 years earlier. Or show everyone how right you are, and print out this thread for your scouting department resume.
The way it works; 1) You can take any of the trades the Browns took or keep the original draft picks. You can't make your own trades out of pure speculation. You can choose to take the Browns tradedown to 9 and also opt out of the trade back to #8 if you wish however ... 2) You cannot make trades that didn't happen. 3) You cannot pick anybody that was picked before the pick you are sitting at ... even if it involves the Browns. For example, you cannot say you would of avoided the trade up to #22 and just picked Johnny Manziel at #26. We have to assume that someone else took him at 22. Same thing with GIlbert at #8. You can't refuse the trade and take him at #9. Otherwise it's just wild speculation as to who might of been available when. Just pick guys that were on the board when that pick was actually made. 4) You have the benefit of hindsight ... so all those guys that screamed for us to take Manziel or Bridgewater at #4, can now take solace and draft them at 22 or 26 if you like to. So mostly I really liked how this draft turned out, at least for the expensive pieces. As a whole, this is what I would change, knowing what I know now. 12) Danny Shelton, NT Washington -- I wanted DeVante Parker here, but the same way Bridgewater's "not wanting to go to Cleveland" stuff turned me off to him, the same applies to Parker. Shelton has a quality of endurance that is rare in a big man, and I love his attitude and hustle. I'm not 100% on his skill, but he seems coachable and I think his issues are coachable. 19) Malcom Brown, DE Texas -- Tough to pass on Agholor and Devin Smith here, but I think he's the best run defender for an interior DL in the draft. That's our biggest problem on defense. To get him at 19 is stealing IMO. 51) Clive Walford, TE Miami -- As tempting as it is to add Maxx Williams, and though I don't hate the Orchard pick, I'm going to have to take the most complete TE in the class here. Above average in every category... blocking, hands, athleticism, route running... I just really like this guy and think Dwayne Allen when I see him. 77) Owamagbe Odighizuwa, OLB UCLA -- I love Duke Johnson. Love the guy. Terrific running back. But I don't think he makes our team better as much as a pass rusher would at this point. OO has Demarcus Ware-like size/athleticism combination and is a very good perimeter run defender. Also consider Mauldin here. 96) Xavier Cooper, DE Washington St. -- Three defensive linemen in 5 picks? When we traded up, I was hoping it was for Cooper. I think he's a second round talent. 115) Max Garcia, C Florida -- In my opinion, he's the second-best center in the class. Most powerful guy in the middle of the line in the draft in games and stoned both Shelton and Carl Davis in 1-on-1s at the Senior Bowl. Like Erving, has experience at multiple positions on the line (has started at tackle, guard, and center in college.) I do like Erving better, but for a 1st vs. a 4th round investment i think this is a much better bang for the buck. 123) Rashad Greene, WR Florida St. -- One of the best route runners in the draft, if not the best. FSU's leading receiver 4 years in a row, and super clutch when the game is in question. Always gets open, catches the ball reliably, and moves the chains. almost 1,400 yards receiving last year in a pro style offense. 189) Nick O'Leary, TE Florida St. -- Best hands of maybe any player at any position in this draft. Such a natural receiver and a punsihing blocker, especially in the red zone. Not as athletic as Walford or Williams but has magnet hands and plays the game tough. Big play, tough catch kind of receiver. 1st team all-american in 2014 with 15 TDs in the last 2 seasons. 195) Josue Matias, OG Florida St. -- Three FSU players in a row? But if they have so many good players why didn't they go undefeated two years in a row? Well, they basically did. At this point, he's just the best available player to me. He's got the size to play tackle, too. 198) Anthony Jefferson, S UCLA -- Terrific in man coverage, very good run stopper in the red zone. More athletic than Campbell. 219) Hayes Pullard, ILB USC -- Perfect pick. No excuse for him being available in the 7th. 241) IEO, CB Oregon -- Ditto. JMO. Overally, as oyu can see I really liked Day 1 and 2 (and round 7) of our draft. But these are some tweaks I think we could have done better.

Funny b/c after we picked Shelton and our next pick was getting closer, the question I asked was; can Malcom Brown play DE? Wondered if we would take two D-lineman in the 1st.

I might have taken Dupree instead of Shelton, Jordan Phillips instead of Orchard, and Darren Waller instead of Gaines. I like the rest of our picks. Gaines is the only pick I'm really "meh" on. I'd have liked Jesse James in the 5, but not better than what we got with Cooper. So:
12. Bud Dupree 19. Cameron Erving 51. Jordan Phillips 77. Duke Johnson 96. Xavier Cooper 115. Ibraheim Campbell 123. Vince Mayle 189. Darren Waller 195. Malcolm Johnson 198. Randall Telfer 219. Hayes Pullard 241. Ifo Ekpre-Olomu
I'm happy with the way the draft worked out for the most part. We needed a NT and if I hadn't known Phillips would fall to us in the second I'd have probably grabbed Shelton, too. I would've liked to go Flowers-Dupree, but the Giants had to go and grab him at nine. Erving looks like a good run blocker, too, and has more versatility, so it may have worked out for us. I'm ready to see the guys we got on the field already.

Thanks for keeping up the tradition clevesteve! I'd post my own take, but I really didn't follow the draft class very closely this year.
I might of taken Parker at #12 and Brown at #19, but I can't complain with what we did.
The guys I really want to see post in here are the guys that were so adamantly against who we did draft.

12) WR Agholor or DT M.Brown 19) DT M.Brown or NT Phillips 51) RB D.Johnson or WR Lockett or TE Walford 77) OLB Mauldin 96) DT Cooper or ILB Dawson 115) SS Campbell or CB McCain 123) WR Greene or CB McCain 189) RB Josh Robinson or TE O'Leary 195) C Gallik or C Dismukes or C Mancz 198) TE R.Anderson or OLB Ringo 219) ILB Taiwan Jones or OG Matias or NT T.Williams 241) CB IEO
In hindsight, the best case for me would have probably been:
12) WR Agholor 19) NT Phillips (have Brown a little higher, but Phillips is better combo with Cooper later, Brown+Cooper would have been just as good though) 51) TE Walford (trusting Steve here, as I haven't seen much of him) 77) OLB Mauldin (better player in every facet than Orchard, won't ever be a star, but get 4-8 sacks and stop the run at SOLB) 96) DL Cooper (might be the best value of the entire draft. Loved it even more that Farmer traded up for him, gave me some hope) 115) can't decide, flip a coin between SS Campbell or CB McCain, probably Campbell , because the CB value later is better, but McCain is the slightly better player overall 123) WR Greene (DOH !!) 189) CB/FS L.Gunter (I understand the Gaines upside gamble, but I like Gunter much more) 195) RB Josh Robinson (If he stays healthy, this guy will play in the league, 3 down RB) 198) perfect value for a quality backup C with starter upside, Gallik , Dismukes, Mancz, whatever style and system you prefer 219) ILB T.Jones (much better fit than Pullard for the 3-4. I don't see Pullard working out due to his lack of physicality. Even official reports have him shying away from contact/blocks. Sounds like a 4-3 MLB that needs to stay clean, but lacks the coverage ability there. Simply put, he doesn't offer starter upside. Jones is a 3-4 fit and at least is good against the run.) 241) IEO (well worth gamble)

12) Danny Shelton NT/Washington 19) D.J. Humphries RT/Florida 51) Markus Golden OLB/Missouri 77) Eli Harold OLB/Virginia 96) Xavier Cooper DT/Washington State. 115) Blake Bell TE/Oklahoma (Very big, athletic, tons of upside, just raw) 123) Rashad Greene WR/Florida State 189) Nick O'Leary TE/Florida State 195) Ian Silberman OG/Boston College 198) Bud Sasser WR/Missouri (Very productive WR for Missouri, first team all SEC) 219) Hayes Pullard ILB/USC (No issues with this pick) 241) Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB/Oregon (No issues with this pick)
Double up at defensive line, double up at pass rusher, add a sure fire right tackle prospect, and we added some late round receiver help.
I didn't think a high round receiver was a necessity coming out of this draft, I loved the way we upgraded in the trenches. I do think we should have grabbed a tightend earlier, but I'm comfortable with Bowe, Hartline, Hawkins and Gabriel being the primary four receivers while we're looking to be a run first offense.
I didn't DISLIKE the Duke Johnson pick in the third round, but Eli Harold was on the board, and to me you can NEVER have enough quality pass rushers.

My "live" picks would have been:
12) DT M.Brown 19) WR Agholor 51) DL Cooper 77) OLB Mauldin 96) ILB Dawson 115) WR Greene 123) RB J.Robinson or CB IEO (depending on medical info would have been picked somewhere) 189) CB IEO 195) C Gallik 198) TE R.Anderson 219) ILB T.Jones 241) CB/FS L.Gunter

Here is what I would have done:
First I wouldn't have made the 1st trade of picks 111, 147, & 202 for picks 96 & 219 but I would have done the other two which would give me these picks below.
(11) NT Shelton (19) OL Erving (51) OLB Orchard (77) RB Johnson (111) DT Jarrett (115) SS Campbell (123) WR Mayle (147) WR Lippett (189) TE O'Leary (195) FB/TE Johnson (198) ILB Pullard (202) FS Holliman (241) CB Ekpre-Olomu
