Is this a good thing? This is only going to make people think he is more like JaMarcus Russell.

I am less impressed after seeing the video. Troy Smith, yes that Troy Smith, threw it 68 yards.

I'm just wowed at the 'gee whiz' factor in general. 70+ yards?

You guys don't see that as an impressive human feat?

wow. Just- wow.

I'd be happy if I could toss a spiral for more than 20 yards...

74 is a huge throw.. not many NFL QBs can do that. 68 is pretty good as well.

There are some skills challenge videos (long throw) on youtube involving some current and former NFL QBs. I saw one that had Flacco throwing 74 the year he was drafted. A-Rod at Cal won an event with a 64 yard throw although he had one that was about 70 that missed the target (which happened to all the other competitors as well.)

Vinny Testaverde threw one 80 yards and as far as I can tell, that is the record (at least for those types of challenges.)

edit: it looks like it was thrown from midfield and lands a couple yards behind the goal post. So maybe 62 yards? Still awfully impressive, but Kornheiser sounds like he was exaggerating

65 yards from his knees! That's insane!

The bottom line is this -- NFL QBs (and even none NFL QBs like Troy Smith) can throw footballs really far.

Cardale has a lot to learn, but with that frame, and that arm strength, the sky is the limit.

He has also shown to be really good moving up in the pocket, which is something college QBs have a tough time doing.

I think we got lost in the hype machine with these college QBs. Andrew Luck was called a once in a 30 years type prospect for a reason. He had very little of a learning curve. Now we almost expect it out of all these guys. I love Marcus Mariota as a prospect, but he needs tons of work at the NFL level.

Derek Anderson threw 74 yard bombs all the time. Of course they were on a rope going 110 mph and the wr was only three yards away from him but hey they were still 74 yard passes.

If you need a hail mary from your own 25, he's your guy. Provided of course the line can hold the rushers back long enough for the receivers to get there.

Didn't JaMarcus Russell do the same kind of thing once?

That's 2 references to JaMarcus Russell. So you're saying JMR once did this, and Cardale Jones did this, so Jones is the same as Russell? I ate pancakes for breakfast. Ted Bundy ate pancakes, I guess that makes me a serial killer.

Dont forget they kind of look alike(I.E. same color) and are similar in stature(stocky black men)

So apparently that is enough to connect them

No, what it means is that being able to do so is no guarantee of anything.

You are absolutely correct, but then I never said it guaranteed anything. It's just one thing, that if combined with several others, could complete a larger picture. The 3 games he played are a VERY small sample from which to draw any conclusions. There are a lot of unknowns about this kid, but my curiosity is piqued.

CJ reminds me of a guy that has a cannon for an arm, is a pretty accurate passer - and a guy that as a kid took the game "Red Rover" to new levels.

Today, were he to play that game, I doubt you'd ever hear the opposing team say "Red Rover Red Rover, Send 12 Gauge right over." smile

Ha.

I remember seeing Jamarcus Russell do this before the 2007 draft....

I like Cardale, but before I jump on the bandwagon I just want to see how he holds up and plays over a full season. Clearly the kid can play in BIG GAMES but I just wanna see some growth and consistency throughout a 12 to hopefully 15 game 2015 season.

I couldn't agree with you more. I like what I saw from him but three games just isn't a large enough window.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

And that's exactly what I noticed, CJ was sloughing off would be tacklers just like Big Ben has been doing to us for a decade.

If there was a guy breaking open 74 yards downfield then it's a great thing.... otherwise, it's just a thing. tongue

Seriously, that kind of arm strength is impressive but like most everybody else, I will be more impressed if he can anticipate a route and hit a guy in the hands on a 15 yard out.. or put touch on the seam route dropping it in over the LB and in front of the safety without getting his TE killed... Rarely in the NFL does a QB have time to wait for a guy to get open 70 yards downfield.

I see a lot of Big Ben in him too. There was a throw, I think in the national championship where he was flushed out of the pocket, he headed forward towards the LOS, and just flicked a 40-50 yard pass as if it were nothing. That's Roethlisburger. That's where arm strength plays a role. Even the guys who don't have a Flacco/Ben types arm who are established in the league can get the ball downfield if they need to.

Also the limited space in the pocket. There was a play in week 1 against hte steelers, just before the half where Ben hit Antonio Brown in the corner. He had almost no room to stand in the pocket. Another half second and he was probably toast. It was a perfect throw. That's the difference in having the big arm.

Cardale has so much to learn. I'm incredibly happy for him though. I hope he ends up in a good situation where there is an established coaching staff. Who knows, if Pettine survives his second year, where he has to trot out Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel, he could be that coach that now gains respect because he's still around. It's his show. Cardale needs a coach who has the backing for him to really coach him up.

I'm hoping that B Miller realizes that as much as he wants to be a QB, his path to the NFL is at another position. That would reduce the QB competition to Barrett and CJ. Then I'm hoping Urban goes with CJ for this year to allow him to prove if he is for real, then off to the NFL. Barrett then gets 2 years to be the man. And yeah, the icing would be CJ is for real and ends up playing for his hometown team. smile

didnt Kyle Boller throw a 70 yarder on one knee???? How did that turn out? Im not saying hes Kyler Boller, but throwing a ball far means nothing if you can hit what you are throwing. I am more interested in his ability to read a defense, improvise, and work out of a NFL offense.

I agree with you. I think both your question and your first statement were addressed earlier in this thread.

What this shows is that he has arm strength. In his 3 games he showed some other good qualities. We need more to truly evaluate, but the arm strength is impressive.

I can still sling a football 60 yards and I'm not even close to being a QB in the NFL or College. IMO Distance has nothing to do with it. I'd like to see him hit a basket 74 yards that is moving 10-15mph.

I can throw a football 7.4 yards. I'd be in traction for a week afterwards ..... but I might even make it 7.5 yards. wink crazy
