Fraser, Unck signed to 1-year deals Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 04.25.2007 Just days before the 2007 NFL Draft, the Browns re-signed two players who originally joined the team as undrafted free agents.
Defensive lineman Simon Fraser and linebacker Mason Unck each were signed to one-year contracts Wednesday.
Fraser will enter his third NFL season this fall. In two seasons as a Brown, the Upper Arlington, Ohio native and Ohio State alum has appeared in all 32 games with 5 starts, marking 37 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 3 pass breakups in addition to contributing on special teams.
Fraser was an exclusive rights free agent.
Unck, meanwhile, has served as one of the leaders of the club's special teams units since 2003. He has totaled 55 special teams takedowns in 44 games as a Brown including a career-high 23 last season. He also has recorded 6 tackles in scrimmage situations.
Unck was an restricted free agent prior to the signing.
Awesome... I htink Unck is underrated for his special teams contributions. I know I'm not th eonly one to say it, but he's like the new and improved Brant Boyer. Can start/backup in a pinch, but his true value is one special teams doing the unglorious work.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.
Simon has impressed me alot...glad we locked him for atleast one year, would like to see what he has to for it to be a starter...........Unck, funny last name, great ST player!!!!!
Fraser will be more successful in the Pros than Gerard Warren because the kid loves to play. He will only get better. He probaby wont ever make the Pro-bowl but he could definitley be the kind of guy who gets his teamates going by the way he plays.
Fraser's been improving every year he's been in the league and was the only DL to get any sort of pressure on the QB last year. Granted that's not necessarily a 34 DE's job but it is a nice bonus.
Maybe in a couple years with improved strength he might be able to make a run at a starting spot. Quality backup at the least though.
As a side note, when you are adding scrimmage tackles in, I think that is going a little far. I think Charlie threw for 5000 yds last year if you include his practice time.
I'm coming home, I'm coming home, tell the world I'm coming home
Unck, eh..... special teamer. We can get that in the draft. Not interesting to me at all, actually I'm surprised. He is a solid special teamer, but....
Fraser I'm happy about. FA pick up, gives us a decent back up on a thin DL. He showed some flashes last season. Great at batting down balls.
one-year deals which means expendable also. fine signings but if they cant make the roster thats fine too. I mean i hope Orien Harris shows up as our rotating DE this year. I think the guy's got more potential than Frasier, honestly. He was pretty decent in college and even though he was like a 5th round pick, i felt he should have been earlier. He's one of my favorite pickups for us.
I really get the feeling that he just got moved to the Steelers practice squad hoping he'd be overlooked, and we nabbed him right away. Hopefully this year he clicks and figures out the 3-4 DE role and can rotate Roye out for us.
With another ILB in the draft, it could easily mean bye bye for Unck. Cause who would we cut, Stewart? Thompson? May be MacMillan but he plays Outside while Unck plays Inside.
Signing the one year makes them expendable if we find upgrades, that's the thing. So it's really not that big of a deal
Come Sunday night and Monday morning there is a heck of alot of competition for the top udfa. The Browns can point to these signings along with Cribbs' contract to show they would get a fair shot to make the club here.

FOOTBALL PLAYERS......Both have earned this contract and another chance to play, They have worked hard, played hard and EARNED thier pay,
Congradulations to both, forget about that UFA tag, your Football players, to many of us your more of a Football player than ones weve taken in the first round.
Simon plays with heart. As an UFA I was glad when he made the team. I'm more glad now that he's still with us. (Besides, he married a friend of mines wifes sister, so that makes us almost related) Mason is a really really excellent special teams player. And one other thing I like about him, is he is the first player on the field to try and get the fans pumped up before each kick off. Really like'em both. Hope they stay a long time.
Fraser i love him on our team, backup or starter he plays with heart. Saw him eating at a Country Club i work at the other day with his family. Hes a pretty big guy lol.
