I know some say "why wait so long to do this?" ... but I think it's smart to wait until the deadline. I think we knew all along that we'd pick up the option, but what if he was seriously injured this past weekend?
What if a team calls about a great trade? We knew we wanted him, but it's smart business to wait.

Until YT brought it to my attention I was not aware of the injury liability the team would have been exposed to in the recent mini camp. That is a smart business reason to have delayed the extension. I'm glad its been resolved and I'm glad that continuity has finally started to make an appearance at the Berea facility.

Agreed! Good to see. Time frame set to negotiate a successor contract. I think an important message here about loyalty, continuity, and FO respect for solid player contribution. Helping players succeed and rewarding them creates trust and enthusiasm. I think this is important after the Banner/Lombardi bust. I might attach too much importance to this psychological side of the game (or emotional or whatever), and I do not care so much if they are content, I just want them to "ball up" as Haden said. This goes beyond a coach's praise IMO. Respect is a motivator, not just lip service for pressers. Play like a Brown, Phil.

I did, which is all that I was looking for. Considering the direction that the team is heading, allowing Taylor to dangle on the edge of free agency did not make sense to me. This decision is in line with the other good moves, such as retaining Mack, that have taken place so far.

Awesome! Through 2015 and have time with no pressure to work on something long term. Love it Ray Farmer!
Phil is a monster.

It really is one of the things that baffles me too. After watching him ball, I can't help but love the man. How many big guys like Phil do you see hustling and making plays down field? But seemingly he is lazy and takes a lot of plays off.
I don't know, what I do know is that I want him to be given a long term contract and he can wreak linemen with our front for years to come.

Actually we would have had him for 2014 regardless, giving us a year to negotiate a contract before his current one expired.
Just like Tenn. decided not to extend the fifth year deal on Locker. They still have him this year. So while I kind of understand your concern, I wouldn't consider that having him "dangling on the edge of free agency".
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I'm a big Phil fan myself, and am happy we picked up his option. When he stands out he really stands out. But he is not consistent. I consider him an underachiever. On where he was picked and his potential. If he had the heart of Rubin he would be probowler yearly. But I am happy we still have him, he fits perfect in our rotation so he can take his plays off then.

this is gonna sound like I'm picking on GD but, that's the reason I wasn't worried about the 5th year thing.. I kinda took it lightly..

I look at it different with the big guys. There comes a point where any player knows they don't have a chance. For DB's, that may be 40 yards down field after a long chase. For backers.....maybe 20- 25 yards....for a big DT type lineman....it may be 10 yards away.
Sure, you want some prusuit to possibly take away early cut back lanes, but once the ball carrier is past them to any degree.....give it up....save the energy for the next play.
No sense running around when you know you don't have a chance. It's not like baseball where you make the 30 yard sprint to first because maybe somebody bobbles a ball or drops a ball.
I see no need for Phil to make 30 yard sprints....10 yards is probably good.

I agree with you 100% on that. I just feel he disappears during stretches some times. It could be tired, cause he is a big boy. Or he is just one of those emotional vs not 101% effort kind of guys. If he is pissed and fired up that's the Phil I love. If that not there then rotate him out. Resting gets him chomping at the bit to get fired up and back in. I said it before, if he had the work ethic of Rubin.......

disappears? yea I think he might. but he has had setbacks too. he did not get the chance to play in the same defence for more than a year. his second year he had the peck injury and missed half the season then last year switched to 3/4. I was kind of hoping they were trying to work out a 4 year 12 or 16 mil contract but...... didn't happen.
being a browns fan is like taking your dog to vet every week to be put down...

I think Phil sometimes gets what I call big man syndrome. The big men never get the spotlight and especially the big run stuffer type bodies that get asked to occupy space. It's kinda lame but hey no ones perfect and I got that a lot when I played.
But when the call came in to pin em back and penetrate man do the nerves get pumping. Call me selfish but its how I was wired and it's somewhat subconscious.
He has always reminded me poor mans big baby. Not that he's a nutcase just similar players. Rogers would disappear and lacked effort when he was asked to occupy but as soon as he saw the opportunity to make a play he was a man among boys. When Phil gets his bulk moving forward and he gets his eyes on the prize I've seen him throw an OL with one punch.
That all said I think this D will fit Phil well. Based on last years Bills the NT plays more 1-tech.

J/C Small mentions that I've read this week say that the Pettine's/O'Neil defense has Phil moving around some. So we might see him play DE in some instances, or 4-3 three technique. That will be interesting.
