So I'm looking for a TV series to take up some time while I'm at work on the Tugboat I work on. I try to find things my G/F normally wouldn't be interested in watching, otherwise I'd be working my way through the X-Files.

Anyway, I saw Babylon 5 for 15$ at Best Buy and I have 15$ in Best Buy Rewards to spend by mid-April. So I was debating between Max Payne 3 (videogame) and Babylon 5 Season 1 Television series.

For a Sci-Fi junky, was Babylon 5 any good? I remember when it was out, but at that point I was pretty young and didn't quite get Sci-Fi yet. Loved Battlestar Gallactica, Firefly, and I am obsessed with all things Star Trek.

The other series I was looking at was FarScape, but that's on Netflix and I might watch that at home. Anyone have an opinion on Babylon 5? Or even Farscape for that matter

It is an absolute classic. I own the entire series, and highly recommend it.

No opinion on Babylon 5 or the other - but if you're into the shows based off history and etc, there is a show (one of two that I actually watch and subscribe to weekly, it's new on Thursdays @ 10pm) that is called Vikings.

It's really good and usually I'm not a big tv series person. Maybe have a peak at that.

Roger that, I think I'll pick that up then. Love Sci-Fi everything. Popular Science articles on spaceships, NASA reports, Star Trek, Sci-Fi novels. Sci-Fi movies. And it's nice to see that it isn't that Sci-Fi show of the 90's or early 2000's that had Kevin Sorbo as the leader of some starship (had to do a background check on that one).

Thanks for the opinion, I just don't like to waste my time watching a TV show that is garbage.

I've talked about that one a lot with the G/F, we'll probably watch that together eventually unless it gets put on the back burner. I like History stuff, was a History major and taught Social Studies for a brief stint (before becoming a Tug Boater). Right now we just started that Cosmos show. I love all things space as well, and she likes that Astronomer that narrates it.

But I could do some Viking Stuff, loved Michael Criton's book Eaters Of The Dead, and loved Thirteenth Warrior with Antonio Benderas the Arab. And I always see the commercials for that show. But that will be saved for home probably, not the boat

I've heard really great things about Babylon 5 and Farscape. I'm also glad to see someone really likes Firefly. I think it's still underrated for a cult show.

If you're interested in something like Vikings, Spartacus on Starz was really freaking amazing. It was great in every way. The only drawback is that it makes HBO shows look like they're regulated by the FCC. But if the nudity doesn't bother you (The violence all looks like it's done by the people who did 300 so a lot of post production stuff.) then you should watch it.

Also, if you're into anime, not everyone's thing, then they have some really great sci-fi stuff.

I loved Firefly too.. I love shows that take 2 genres that really don't go together, and make them go together anyway. Firefly was essentially a western, set in space. Cool concept, great cast, incredible writing. I really have a hard time seeing why it lasted only part of one season.

It had horrible ratings and a big budget. I wish they would have gave Joss a second season just on the performance of Buffy/Angel.

I'm pretty upset about the lack of love that Space Westerns get within TV/Movies producers and screenwriters. Especially since Star Wars is basically one big space western (with swords). But it's also hard to sell audiences on two combined genres that are perceived to be diametrically opposed.

I own every season and additional movies on dvd. Love B5. highly recommend it.

Also, if you're looking for further sci-fi fare I would highly recommend Fringe if you haven't already viewed it. IMO Fringe was the some of the best TV the last decade.

Bumping this up because as I was mindlessly rummaging through the channel guide, what did I run across but Babylon 5!

Dish channel 289, Comet

It's on nightly between 8-10. laugh

The entire series is on Amazon Prime. The first four seasons are great. The fifth season, ehh...

I liked B5 earlier on; the end, not nearly as much. I was also a fan of Red Dwarf and The Prisoner. Says a lot or a little about sci-fi tastes. Really have a soft spot for the Brits.

Own B5.

If you like campy British sci-fi, you need to watch the BBC version of the Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy.

I agree! Saw parts, not all, Erik. Bring your towel! LOL Enjoyed reading the series a lot.

Question came to me yesterday after I left the board here: Can a list also include The Rocky Horror Picture Show? It IS sci-fi after all. And there's that Time Warp thang. Just askin'.
