Broncos release Al Wilson
By Bill Williamson

Al Wilson (Post file / Hyoung Chang)

Al Wilson's Broncos career is over. The Broncos released the former defensive captain today.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a neck injury Dec. 3 against Seattle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and spent a short time at a local hospital before being released. Wilson, 29, then came back to finish the season.

However, on March 23, he failed a physical with the New York Giants, who nixed a proposed trade from Denver. Wilson subsequently saw a specialist in Los Angeles who confirmed the injury.

Wilson said today if he is medically cleared, he hopes to play again. He said he doesn't believe surgery is needed.

"It's not a day to be sad, it's a celebration," Wilson said at a news conference held at the office of his Denver-based agent Peter Schaffer. "I have no hard feelings."

Wilson was a first-round draft choice out of Tennessee in 1999. He quickly became a fierce vocal leader and a fan favorite. Wilson was voted a starter for the Pro Bowl this past season, but he didn't play because of he had postseason thumb surgery.

damn, that's a tough break.

Don't mess around with neck injuries though.... especially ones that cause you to still fail a physical months afterward.

Exactly right Purp. If you hurt Neck just once, your whole career could be jeoperdized..Not very many players come back from neck injurys in the NFL..

I can think of one brown I was excited to have and then he seriously injured his neck and never really played for us.... Anyone know who I'm thinking of?

Bonus points... There was another Brown who seriouly injured his neck... he suffered a herniated disk in his neck in the early 90's.

Both played on D

Hmmm, my first guess would be a linebacker, supposed to play for us back in '99, now does a little radio work

Might this be the same player who owns (owned?) The Stables down in Canton?

I remember watching that game, I am not suprized.

I thought he broke his neck and would be paralyzed for life.

It was that bad.
