i guess from past experiences, i'd rather set my expectations cellar-low and then be pleasantly surprised when(?) we beat one of these guys. . .

I hear ya... my expectations for that stretch are only off by one game, so it's not like I'm super optimist either. I feel we have a very realistic liklihood of coming out of that stretch at 2-2 at the worst, 3-1 at best.
Pitt is undergoing a LOT of changes, I think we'll take them. Cinci, I think will be too much for us still (though minus Henry, who knows? ...without CB help for us though it probably doesn't matter) Oakland - penciling in a 'W' there. Balt. - the wildcard... coming off a good season, but an old team is a year older

The flip side of that is if we can manage something decent, the second half of the season offer a chance to make a push for the playoffs.
True enough, Peen.
I really haven't set my expectations for the season yet, but would have felt a little more comfortable with a more balanced schedule - or at least one that would have allowed us to gain some confidence early on. Not that we can't gain that confidence by beating good teams - but the odds are still against us at this point. Mistakes are weighed more heavily against better opponents.
We're just still making too many changes. There will be a learning process those first few games. Not that you can't still win those, but its harder when you're in transition on so many levels.
On the flip side, the teams we'll face might be more vulnerable to being caught off guard by things they've never seen us do?
Hey - I'm reaching for a positive here.
We've known the teams we'd face for quite a while, but I'm honestly not sure it would be possible to build a suckier schedule with those teams. That's about as front loaded as they come. (4 of your first 5 games against 3 teams that beat you twice last year and a perenial super bowl contender).
Ouch!

My super duper early predictions...
Sep 9 Pittsburgh 1:00pm W we get all pumped up out of the gate and shut them down when the team is still getting comfortable with the new coaches Sep 16 Cincinnati 1:00pm L we loose a close one at home Sep 23 @Oakland 4:05pm W Oakland is a mess we pull out the W Sep 30 Baltimore 1:00pm L thier D is only getting better and better... our O has a better chance at some points but blows it b/c we can't convert 3rd downs. Oct 7 @New England 1:00pm L ha ha yeah right.... it'll probably be snowing in NE their win% is amazing at home when it snows. Oct 14 Miami 1:00pm L miami is on the up and up they should gel this season and make the playoffs Week 7 BYE Oct 28 @St. Louis 1:00pm W St Louis has a lot of holes to fill and thier team really isn't getting any younger. Nov 4 Seattle 4:05pm L I can't see us traveling to the WC and pulling a W out on their home field. Nov 11 @Pittsburgh 1:00pm L payback for the W on opening day... Pitt starts to gel as a team... Nov 18 @Baltimore 1:00pm L I can't see us beating them this year... if Mcnair stays healthy... Nov 25 Houston 1:00pm W Super Mario gets pancaked all day Lewis runs well and we ride on his shoulders to a W Dec 2 @Arizona 4:05pm W AZ could turn things around in the desert but I'm gonna play the odds against them. Dec 9 @N.Y. Jets 4:15pm L Pennington and co really played well at the end of last season... look for more good things to come from them. Dec 16 Buffalo 1:00pm W Buffalo is in shambles... they are loosing their core players to FA... it's another rebuilidng year for them. Dec 23 @Cincinnati 1:00pm L Henry comes back and even though Bodden shuts down Ocho cinco all game... Palmer comes up big and Cincy pulls out a W Dec 30 San Francisco 1:00pm 50-50 here.. SF is Fighting for a playoff spot in a weak divison... SF turns it up and shuts down the Browns... or we play the spoiler and come out with the W and knock SF out of the playoff race
I'm stuck between 6-10 and 7-9

we almost beat the Ravens last year.. should have beat them.. along with the Steelers...
Just have to play 4 Quarters!!!
the key to this season is the division wins... 3-3 isnt bad... but 4-2/5-1 would be excellent. Its not realistic seeing our record last year, but u never know. They could pull a cinderella story for sure.

Call me crazy, but with all of the young guys on both sides of the ball, I'd rather have the easier part of the schedule later. The first part may be tough, but it will help us grow as a football team and maybe come out of it with a few surprise wins. We'll just have to ramp it up in the 2nd half

Season opener full of history, intrigue Steve King, Staff Writer 04.11.2007 The Browns' rivalry with the Pittsburgh Steelers is steeped in history. But the two teams meeting in the season opener pushes the rivalry almost off the charts in that regard. And that is what the clubs -- and fans -- in both cities have to look forward to when the Browns host the Steelers Sept. 9 at Cleveland Browns Stadium to kick off the 2007 campaign. Aside from 1996-98, when the Browns were in limbo, the teams have played each other twice a year every season since 1950 when Cleveland joined the NFL from the All-America Football Conference. However, they've collided in the season opener just four times, three of which have come in the "modern" era -- since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. And each of those last three openers have been blockbusters in terms of their storylines -- before, during and after the games. In 1989, the first time in the modern era that it occurred, Bud Carson's initial game as head coach of the Browns was at Pittsburgh. That's the last thing he wanted for a number of reasons. First of all, Pittsburgh is where Carson built his resume as an NFL coach while serving as defensive coordinator during much of the Steelers' reign in the 1970s. Three Rivers Stadium was, of course, the site of so many of the most glorious moments for him in that span. And the man who gave Carson a chance to work that magic was Steelers head coach Chuck Noll, the Cleveland Benedictine High School product who was a messenger guard for the Browns in the 1950s. So here was Carson facing his old boss -- and dear friend, the man to whom he owed plenty -- in Pittsburgh, at Three Rivers Stadium, in the first game. Carson was already under enough pressure without that. His career greatly paralleled that of current Browns head coach Romeo Crennel in that both were lifelong NFL assistants who had made their mark as defensive coordinators and, just when they thought that a head coaching opportunity might never be in the cards, it arrived for them with the Browns when they were in their late 50s. But unlike Crennel, who took on a rebuilding project in 2005, Carson inherited a battle-tested team that had been so close to gaining that elusive first Super Bowl appearance the previous four seasons. His job was to get the Browns over the top -- give them that one last push. He didn't want -- or need -- the first chapter of his NFL head coaching story to be in the place where he had so many friends and great memories. The best possible thing -- and the worst possible thing -- happened for Carson that day. Getting a huge boost from the 4-3 defensive scheme he implemented to replace the 3-4 the team had had for a decade (Crennel replaced a 4-3 look with a 3-4), the Browns crushed the Steelers 51-0, handing Pittsburgh its worst loss ever -- even to this day. That made him an instant hero -- no, make that icon -- with Browns fans. The Browns hadn't just won. They had humiliated their rivals in a place where they had struggled so much for two decades. But in doing so -- and this is the bad part for Carson -- he had also humiliated the proud Noll, the architect of the Steelers' four Super Bowl wins. So that's how you pay me back, Bud, by sticking it to me? Carson was so sheepish about even discussing the lopsided aspect of the victory -- let alone reveling in it -- for it appeared as if the Browns had run up the score. That wasn't the case, though, for it was merely a day in which everything the Browns touched turned to gold, and everything the Steelers touched turned to stone. But five weeks later, Noll and the Steelers got their revenge, upsetting the Browns 17-7 at Cleveland and using that as the key to a resurgence that nearly enabled them to meet the Browns for a third time. The Steelers made the playoffs as a wild card, stunned the AFC Central Houston Oilers in overtime in the first round and then faltered late down the stretch to lose to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round, 24-23. Had the Steelers defeated the Broncos, they would have gone to Cleveland the next week to face the Browns in the AFC Championship Game. Now, Steelers first-year head coach Mike Tomlin opens against the Browns, who gave him a chance to work for them in training camp several years ago as part of the league's minority coaching program. How ironic -- and fitting. The second time the Browns and Steelers met in the opener in the modern era was the following year, 1990, in Cleveland. The players who had been responsible for the Browns' great run through the last half of the 1980s wanted to be paid for that success. As a result, most of the defensive starters held out in a contract dispute until a week before the opener. They showed up, put on their uniforms and, though out of shape, beat the Steelers 13-3 with their experience. But 1990 was the beginning of the end for the Browns of that era. The players got old all at the same time, and the team finished with a then franchise-worst 3-13 record. After being fired halfway through the year, Carson wasn't around to see that, or to see the Steelers get revenge for the defeats in the last two openers by whipping the Browns 35-0 at Pittsburgh in the next-to-last game. So let's see, in both of those instances, the team that won the opener got embarrassed in the rematch later in the year. Could it happen again? Nobody thought so after the Steelers handed the Browns arguably their most crushing defeat in history, dominating from start to finish in winning 43-0 in the 1999 opener. It was the first regular-season game in Cleveland Browns Stadium, and, more importantly, the first for the re-born Browns after the franchise was held in trust the three previous seasons following the original club's move to Baltimore. With the return of its Browns, Cleveland was in one of the most festive moods in the city's history, and the Steelers had not just rained on that parade. They had leveled it with a category 5 tornado. The 1999 Browns were going nowhere fast when the teams met again nine weeks later in Pittsburgh, but the Steelers, at 5-3 and with a three-game winning streak, had real hopes of returning to the playoffs following a year's absence. After what happened in Cleveland, the Browns didn't look to stand a chance. But Phil Dawson's last-play, 39-yard field goal into a stiff wind provided a 16-15 Cleveland triumph and sent the Steelers into a tailspin. That was the first of six straight defeats for them -- the longest such skid in head coach Bill Cowher's 15-year tenure -- and led to a 6-10 record, the Steelers' worst finish under the former Browns special teamer and assistant coach. It was Cowher's darkest hour in Pittsburgh. So what, then, does all of this say? That the outcome of the Sept. 9 game in Cleveland might be reversed when the teams meet Nov. 11 in Pittsburgh. But neither club wants to take that chance, which will add even more fuel to the fire for the opener. Home Page Win this one and it could be a decent season.

I don't think that schedule looks rough at all. And what's all this talk about how tough September is? Only 1 of the 4 teams made the playoffs last year.
I'm not saying we will win those games, but it doesn't look that tough to me. Pittsburgh had a tough year and this year will probably be even tougher for them. Oakland sucks! The Bengals are pretty good. The Rats are good. I will say that the Bengals, Rats, and Steelers typically play harder than we do and beat the out of us.
I think the toughest 4 game stretch is this one:
Oct 28 @St. Louis 1:00pm Nov 4 Seattle 4:05pm Nov 11 @Pittsburgh 1:00pm Nov 18 @Baltimore 1:00pm
Three of the four are on the road and that is the time of year we usually get some OL injuries and our D starts wearing down.
All in all........I think it is a pretty easy schedule. We got Oakland, Arizona, Houston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh twice, San Fran, and Miami. None of those teams strike fear into anyone. I still think we will have a losing record because we are not going to be very good either.

yeah I think so too... If we can get 2-3 Draft Picks that produce like DQ and Wimbley did last year... I think we have a chance to do better and have more close games. We really only had a few games that were blow outs... the rest were pretty close.
last year... Date Score Opponent 09/10 14-19 L NO lost by 5 09/17 17-34 L at CIN lost by 17 09/24 14-15 L BAL a lost by 1 10/01 24-21 W at OAK won by 3 10/08 12-20 L at CAR lost by 8 10/22 7-17 L DEN lost by 10 10/29 20-13 W NYJ won by a 7 11/05 25-32 L at SD lost by 7 11/12 17-13 W at ATL won by 4 11/19 20-24 L PIT lost by 4 11/26 0-30 L CIN BLOW OUT! lost by 30 12/03 31-28 W KC won by 3 12/07 7-27 L at PIT lost by 20 12/17 17-27 L at BAL lost by 10 12/24 7-22 L TB lost by 15 12/31 6-14 L at HOU lost by 8
we had 10 games that were decided with 8 points or less... We could only manage to win 4 out of 10 on those games. Once we start playing better those games will swing from 4 to 8 and the other games would have been close and all of a sudden we will win 9-10 games in a season. We need to learn how to finish games... we can keep the opposing teams close but we can't close them out. JMHO

All in all........I think it is a pretty easy schedule. We got Oakland, Arizona, Houston, Buffalo, Pittsburgh twice, San Fran, and Miami. None of those teams strike fear into anyone. I still think we will have a losing record because we are not going to be very good either.
Percentage wise we have the 7th toughest schedule. Team wise - 12th.

Really pisses me off that we still have no nationally televised games this year. They don't even give us a Sunday night one. It's rediculous. You know we get rated by different sites and companies as having the best fans out of all the NFL teams yet they can't give us a Nationally televised game. The only game I'm going to be able to watch drinking beers will be the one against the Jets. Otherwise I'm stuck hanging out in my college lounge watching them on whatever i can or having to go to the bar and buy beers at whichever will play Browns games.
Either way I'll be watching the thing alone probably. I just don't get it.
Hopefully they telecast it on that computer broadcast thing, Sopcast

In my case I start filling Sept and Oct dates now. I need the dates so I can schedule vacation time to go to the 4-5 games I will attend.
It never hurts to get your hotel and any airline reservations booked well in advance as well.
By the end of the day I will have my games selected and hotels booked. Restaurant reservations can wait a while.
Peen..if you are flying in town for games you may want to check out "farecast.com," for the best prices. Not always a good idea to book in advance, financially anyway. Hope it helps.
Anyway, we obviously have a weaker schedule at the end of the year which could be a plus if we start out "respectable."
My concern is the brutal schedule to begin with, will Crennel or Frye be on a short leash. If so, the first half of the season may not be a good barometer in which to judge.
A win against the Steelers opening day would be huge, IMO.
Go Browns

Think Jamal Lewis will be pumped up for this game? Give this guy an offensive line and he could dish out some serious punishment. A win in the opener could do for the Browns of 2007 what a win in the 2006 opener did for the Saints.

Early games will reveal: Are Browns contenders or pretenders? Posted by Tony Grossi April 11, 2007 20:00PM Categories: Sports It won't take long to determine whether the Browns will be competitive in their division in 2007. Their regular-season schedule, released Wednesday, calls for them to play each of their rivals in the AFC North in the first month of the season. And each game is in Cleveland. For a team that is 1-11 against its division rivals the past two seasons, the unusual early test can be considered an opportunity for redemption -- or a death sentence. The Browns open at home for the ninth consecutive season, this time against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It will be the first regular-season game for Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin in the post-Bill Cowher era. The Steelers will be followed into Cleveland Browns Stadium by the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 16 and by the Baltimore Ravens on Sept. 30. The lone road game of the first month is Sept. 23 at Oakland. The next quadrant of the season starts with a road game against perennial Super Bowl contender New England on Oct. 7. That is coach Romeo Crennel's first meeting against former boss Bill Belichick. A home game against Miami and new coach Cam Cameron follows on Oct. 14 before the bye week. That's the easier part of the schedule. Six of the Browns' final 10 games are on the road, starting with an Oct. 28 game at St. Louis. After a home game Nov. 4 against Seattle -- marking the season halfway point -- the Browns play four of their next five away. They have rematches at Pittsburgh on Nov. 11 and at Baltimore on Nov. 18. There is a home game against Houston Nov. 25 followed by road contests at Arizona on Dec. 2 and the New York Jets on Dec. 9. The season concludes with a home game against Buffalo on Dec. 16, the rematch in Cincinnati on Dec. 23 and a home game against San Francisco on Dec. 30. The combined 2006 record of Browns' opponents is 130-126. Only four made the playoffs in 2006. The Browns have no games scheduled for prime-time national television, although their final eight games could be moved to a Sunday night appearance on NFL Network. C'MON DOWN: Wisconsin left tackle Joe Thomas will visit the Browns on Monday, according to a league source. The Browns previously visited with LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn and Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson. OK...time to show the big guy around!! http://blog.cleveland.com/earlyedition/2007/04/early_games_will_reveal_are_br.html
