On facebook, a friend of mine had a picture of cyrus "twerking" that guy at the VMA - the caption was "Take your daughter hunting, so she doesn't do this."
I am so glad my daughter has outgrown her "I love hannah montana" days.

I'm with you on that one. My daughter can't stand her now. I showed her the clip from the VMA music awards show and she just laughed at it. It made me proud.

I used to think she was a cute kid with a decent voice. Never really thought more of her than that to be honest. Now, she's not even on my radar as someone that should be taken seriously. But, when she did that VMA show, she knew exactly what she was doing. Everyone is talking about her which they weren't until that show. What's the old show biz saying, "there is no such thing as bad publicity"

Exactly. She couldn't sell songs to teens anymore so she's trying for an edgy, sexy look for the 20-something crowd. All teen pop stars do it (or they don't do it and just retire).
It was a calculated move. Come on, she grew up with all those Disney exec's sculpting and refining her image to get the most marketable look as possible. She's no dummy.
I was walking through Walgreen today and saw her on the cover of some new magazine, she was dressed nice and had proper makeup on. If I saw her on the street, and I'd think this goes for most people, they'd think she was beautiful.
I'm not defending her actions, because she looked like a whore up there. But her actions sure moved the needle across the country and that usually translates into popularity (and $$$).

How true. Another reason why I look forward to the death of democracy. Democracy breeds mediocrity in all domains of life, including entertainment. Only when popular culture is no longer controlled by the common man will we be free of this dreck.
Edit: Notice, yet another thread a post that disparages the common man. The evidence is all around us. Democracy is dying.

I can hope.... but 'hope' won't change much.
Imagine this: I come home from a one-off gig that features music by the likes of Mozart, Rossini, (Johann) Strauss and Wienawsky... all of whom were 'Pop Stars' in their own time.
I want to unwind after a long day of slogging through 'the same old classical hit parade'.... and tune in to the Grammy ceremony. THE VERY FIRST THING I SEE is a joint where some post-teen is singing out-of-tune (when she actually IS singing), splaying her tongue out, wearing next-to-nothing, and grinding her non-existent butt against a man old enough to be her father.
The 'culture dichotomy' is almost too much to reconcile.

I firmly believe that every population on this planet deserves its own culture... but I'm also equally convinced that most of what passes for "Pop Culture" is actually just shallow entertainment designed for max cashflow.
In that regard, I'll posit this question: Will anything that comes from the throat of Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Lady Gaga, or even Cher withstand the test of time as well as the efforts of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan or (most recently) Esperanza Spalding?
This kid is using every trick in the book to remain relevant. A time will come when she's forced to either produce, or fall off the face of the Earth. When that time comes, she'll either 'step up her game,' -or be reduced to the level of "just another footnote."
Real Artistry not only entertains during its time, it also enlightens and inspires generations to come.
How many of us actually see Miley Cyrus on the same plane as Ella Fitzgerald?
"Quick Money" will never eclipse the depth that a True Artist brings to the game.
Mozart eclipsed Salieri.
Billie Holiday eclipsed The Andrews Sisters.
Ella eclipsed Doris Day.
Entertainment is for the now. True Art is for all of Time.

It started with Moog and Kurzweil, technology replacing talent. Then MTV and later Youtube made flash and image more important than the music.
Individual instrumental play is gradually dying out. It will likely remain on the fringe, but the mainstream has moved on, as it always does. The new thing is that an "instrument" is no longer needed to manipulate sound.
To me it has no "feel", no "soul", it's all just noise. It's a much younger crowd that decides what "music" is.
Clem, do you happen to know a keyboardist named Bobby Floyd? Jazz-Blues, played for Ray Charles for a while? Dude had talent, could jam all day. Lived in C-bus for a while, I think.
SFAIK he has had a decent career but no T&A and no MTV and he's made nowhere near as much cash as people with a LOT less talent and musical ability.
Compare that with this Dub-Step crap the kids play. Gaak.

But isn't that pure, unadulterated capitalism that so many endorse?
Or do they only endorse such things when it fits into their lifestyles and beliefs? Much like big government.
It's nice to believe that some politicians claim not to want big government, but look at how many programs have been restored since the government shut down.
I feel often times people promote what they like and have disdain for what they don't. I certainly understand your loathing for much of the newer "music", (and in many cases I don't even consider it music), but as long as we claim we endorse capitalism, the bad will often come with very little good.

Nelson: I could pick a small bone with you about Moog and Kurtzweil, as some great musicians have used these instruments to very good effect. Chic Corea, Josef Zawinul, Herbie Hancock (and others) found a way to use synthesizers to enhance their compositions in very artful ways. For them, the synth was just another vehicle to expand their sound pallette... but the artistry was always there. I do see why you'd associate synths with "the shallowing of music," but I've just heard too many great pieces with them to agree. I think the difference has always been in the artistry and vision of the performer. I'll agree with you that a lot of crappy music has been made with those things, too. Continuing this line of thought, I'd place the blame on samplers more than synths. Nowadays, a person can rip the intro to Steely Dan's "Black Cow" and splice together a tune for themselves without knowing how to play a single instrument. Bugs the helloutta me, considering how many hours I spent alone in a practice room. I'm familiar with Bobby Floyd's music, but have never met him. He really IS one smokinhot pianist. His stuff is cerebral, techincally flawless, and yet emotionally stimulating too. Dude is the real deal. Hats off to you for knowing his stuff. Artists need an audience every bit as much as entertainers do.

My Dad helped get him started.
I remember listening to him jam for several minutes, "Hey, Bobby, watcha playin", "I don't know, man, I'm just Playin'"
The technology is separating the talent from the music, plus fewer youngsters have the patience to learn. The electronics take a different kind of skill, I guess, but it's just missing something.
Happens every generation, but taking the human out of the creation of the sound is not a good step, IMO.

I'm not a fan of Jimmy Fallon, and I have really only seen parts of his shows maybe 10 times in total ...... (I just don't find him at all funny) but I have to admit that I kinda enjoyed the backup part of that Roots song. The Mylie Cyrus part .... meh ...... but the backup vocals were really good.

Exactly, which explains why popular entertainment is debased. I suppose I shouldn't complain. There is probably something necessary about Miley Cyrus in allowing me to appreciate real artistry all the more. Perhaps I should send her a thank you letter.
