I haven't really heard him since I moved back from Cleveland years ago. Roda was always annoying to me ..... but what do I know? It's a Beacon Journal news article, even though it starts with a tweet, just in case anyone wonders. WKNR shakes up its staff; Kenny Roda let go - Sports Media - Ohio http://www.ohio.com/blogs/sports-media/o...let-go-1.422370Kenny Roda @TheKennyRoda Thanks to all who have made the last 21 years at WKNR a remarkable, unforgettable & amazing journey.I enjoyed sharing it with you all. 2:02 PM - 20 Aug 2013 And with that tweet, Kenny Roda said goodbye to Cleveland airwaves. His fans can only hope it's temporary. Roda, affiliated with WKNR for 21 years, began as the 20-20 Ticker guy and eventually worked his way into talk show host status, walking a very fine line between Pittsburgh Steelers fan and journalist working in the Cleveland market. Tuesday he, Cleveland Browns beat reporter Will Burge and producer, reporter, anchor T.J. Zuppe were fired. Station management could not be reached for comment. Nor could Roda.

Local sports talk radio station AM 850/WKNR lets go three reporters/on-air hosts | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/sports/index.ss...#incart_m-rpt-2Three local sports media members were let go from their positions at AM 850/WKNR (ESPN Cleveland) Tuesday afternoon. Cleveland Browns beat reporter Will Burge, Cleveland Indians beat reporter T.J. Zuppe and on-air show host Kenny Roda were dismissed by the radio station, which is owned by Good Karma Broadcasting. "I was a little surprised. I guess you can never be too surprised in this business when they say they want to meet with you about some big-picture changes," Burge said in an interview with cleveland.com. "They expressed admiration for my talent. Management was really supportive about what they think I can do long term. But they said they wanted to move in a different direction. I have to give them a ton of love. They gave me a ton of opportunities. Maybe this is just them giving me an opportunity in a different way." Burge added he has received calls from other media outlets expressing their desire to hire him. "I've gotten calls from a couple of different places. I'd like to get back in before Browns season begins. There's a lot of interest in that for me. I want to take my time and make the next opportunity a good one for me and make the right decision." Roda worked at the station for 21 years. Earlier in the day, the three Tweeted about being let go. Will Burge @WillBurge 2day a chapter closed in my career, unexpectedly but welcomed. Thanks so much to the fans of #3Deep & WKNR. Ill be back VERY SOON #FreeAgent 10:30 AM - 20 Aug 2013 Will Burge @WillBurge The love has been overwhelming from u guys! Thank u so much, it means a lot from both the fans & colleagues. Like I said I wont be gone long 12:30 PM - 20 Aug 2013 T.J. Zuppe @TJZuppe They say when 1 door closes, another opens. Unexpected change but will forever be indebted to WKNR for giving me the opportunity. #FreeAgent 1:24 PM - 20 Aug 2013 Kenny Roda @TheKennyRoda Thanks to all who have made the last 21 years at WKNR a remarkable, unforgettable & amazing journey.I enjoyed sharing it with you all. 2:02 PM - 20 Aug 2013 Kenny Roda @TheKennyRoda Unbelievably overwhelmed with ur kind words, wishes&thoughts. It means a lot. Thanx 4 making a tough day a little bit better. 2:31 PM - 20 Aug 2013

Word is that Michael Reghi was let go too. Who is going to cover the Cavs and college basketball now?
I hated whenever Roda would talk about football. I don't need my Browns coverage sugar-coated, but I hated being told my team sucked by a Steeler fan. I also think he went over the top at times by saying scrub player x on the Steelers was better than y good player on the browns simply because the Steelers won championships and the Browns didn't.
However, he was really really good with basketball. He watched the games, he did his homework, his coverage of the draft was very good.
I find this news a little weird since I think it came out over the weekend that there were rumors of a third station trying to plug itself into this market.
Why listen to WKNR anymore? I enjoy Rizzo's show, but it has decayed over the last 2 years. I remember the president came on the same day they announced Cleveland Browns daily, and said that the Really Big Show was going to cut commercial time by 3 minutes per hour. They more than make up for that with live-reads. The whole show is brought to you by something.
Will Burge is also a better beat reporter than Toni Grossi, and TJ Zuppe did a great job with a Tribe team that must be really hard to cover.
I love local talk because of how far away I am from home, but it's gotten worse over the years. I enjoy the Ken Carman show, but that's about it.

Could be as simple as a station format flip. Happens all the time. It's only surprising because of how ingrained those personalities were in the market.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

I was never comfortable with Roda, a steelers fan no less, covering the Browns or any other Cleveland sports teams.
I won't miss him, that's for sure. It's been a long time comin'.

I thought Will Burge was one of the best beat reporters in the town. I heard him speak a few weeks ago at a Chamber function, and he was incredibly knowledgeable and entertaining. He and TJ Zuppe were my favorite hosts, actually. Their weekend show, The Bigtimers, was nearly must-listen to me.
WKNR is slipping. I liked Rizzo, but as someone mentioned, the live reads have just gotten to be too much. Baskin and Phelps is boring, but a much easier listen anymore. If 92.3 would get rid of Kiley and Booms, I don't know that I'd ever really change the station. Ken Carman is my favorite host right now, by far.

Agree with both of these statements. I had a hard time listening to him knowing he really wants us to lose ... but still, he lost his job, which sucks.

Ken Carman is my favorite host right now, by far.
His callers are the best. People flushing toilets mid-take, guys calling up hammered. It's a show that doesn't take itself seriously.
He doesn't wear you down with horrible interviews either. Usually the guests have pretty good information. I really hate when they talk with athletes, because they give you nothing but the same coached up answers. Boring. I actually like when he gets beat reporters from sister stations in other AFC North cities. There's always pretty good tidbits in those calls.
He also does a great job with post game Browns. I'm not sure if he will do that this year since everything has been rearranged with getting the Browns' rights as a flagship station.
I'm forever grateful for them getting me into Trailer Park Boys as well.
Heard Reghi on Chud's coach's show earlier, so I don't know if that rumor was true. I hope not because I've always been a fan, and WKNR literally has nobody with good NBA knowledge outside of him right now.

Well, isn't WKNR now the Browns flagship station? That could have something to do with the changes.

It could, but wouldn't getting those rights mean good things for the company and not so much getting rid of 3 or 4 on-air personalities? One of which had been there for 20 years?
I would think a move like that would come after something like losing those rights.

Maybe the Browns wanted different personnel n the air. Who knows? Maybe they didn't like having a Steelers fan on the air for the Browns flagship? Any number of reasons could be valid.

If I was the owner of the Browns and I had any say in it, there is no way a Steeler fan would be doing coverage for the Browns.

Now if we can only get Michael Reghi off the airwaves!!! I stopped listening to WKNR when I found out about 92.3 The Fan. Btw...is Adam Goldhammer still with WKNR? Can't stand listening to him either! Whatever happened to Kendall "BSK" Lewis? Loved hearing him share his knowledge on the airwaves!

I listen to RBS on my way to work through the TuneIn radio app. Really cool.
Rizz is ok. Goldhammer enunciates every other word. It's really hard to listen to. I wonder if he was taught to do that. I listen mainly so I can get Browns news and interviews.
But I think overall the show is pretty benign. Not too over the top. Not terribly annoying other than Hammer from time to time. Oh, and the constant advertising for companies by Rizzo gets a little much. I swear he must eat at B Spot every night.
LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I dont know what everyone is talking about with this trash talking of Roda because he liked the steelers. He never shoved it down the listeners throats and honestly tried to keep it on the down low to allow for unbiased coverage of the Browns. In fact isnt it better to get critiqued by a fan of another team? Or an archrival? They can tell you something you probably completely ignored or didnt think of.
When i first got into sports radio as a kid Roda was the 2nd guy i ever discovered after Jim Rome (who they also have gotten rid of and moved to 1540 the garbage zero signal espn2 of cleveland radio). Roda has been great, but they seem to have disregarded him more and more, moving him later and later into the night so that they could forget about him.
On the other hand Zuppe and Burge have been horrible. Even worse than Fedor. All they ever did was Not talk about sports. I would hear them talk about clothes... food, movies... never sports. In fact this entire station has been endless shameless plugs for so long now. I hate Rizzo because of this and I hate how he never has anything smart or useful to say. He has even admitted to the fact that he may not know everything about an important issue and might not always do his research. That really lost me. The guy leeched off of Rome and then took his Cleveland affiliate away from him.
This entire station has irritated me and even if 92.3 has some fairly subpar talent at times, they still get my listenership because they can at least talk sports and give good opinions, while allowing for listeners to also get involved in the show. I hope they pick up Roda and plug him somewhere... maybe even with Carmen, because Carmen would get the best out of Roda (he usually gets the best out of everyone).

Tuned into WKNR tonight around 8:30 tonight and they were playing a taped segment about what a good move the trade for Moffit was for the Browns.

What advertising??? On your commute, enjoy your new ride from Bob Gillingham ford. Also, hope you took your Joebees this morning!! On your way home, don't forget to stop and pick-up some mouthwatering steaks from Acme Fresh Market, they're to die for. Let's not forget that in your new Gillingham ford you'll have plenty of room to bring home you new beautiful patio furniture from the Great Escape. And Rish, with winter coming now is the time to get you BOGO on windows from our friends at Window Nation where the staff is professional and courteous. Hell, they'll be done installing the windows by the time it takes you to eat at B-Spot. I've been brain washed!

Don't listen to Cleveland AM radio as much as I once did, but Roda was one of the more tolerable ones, in my opinion.
Rizzo wanted to be national so badly it was pathetic.
That kid he had with him had no business with a mic in his face. His only value was as a heel, and he wasn't even good at that.
That Bob Frantz guy...my God, what a joke that guy is. I don't know how he is now, but when I used to listen he seemed to be desperately reaching to make it as a "conservative" talk show host, but was an utter failure...which is pretty hard to do.
That brand of radio isn't hard...most of the dyed-in-the-wool GOP-types who listen to that sort of programming are pretty well indoctrinated. You don't have to do much there. And he couldn't even do that.
Triv has been spinning his wheels in the mud for close to 20 years.
Reghi...I could tolerate him, but he wasn't the sharpest crayon in the box, either.

I didn't mind Roda or Zuppe both better than Jolley and Brenda. But I loved Burge and the guys on 3Deep. It was definitely my favorite show on the air. It had an little but of everything and felt like I was sitting around BS'ing with my friends.

Like I said, I don't want to be told by a steeler fan that my team sucks. Just personal preference.
For the most part, he kept his fandom to himself, but every once in a while the DB steeler fan would come out.
I can't remember the player, but he told some caller a few years ago that this guy that played for the steelers, who really was just a depth player, it wasn't Harrison or Keisel or any of those guys, was better than DQwell Jackson, because he won a Super Bowl and DQ plays for the Browns. I'm sorry but that's being a typical douche steeler fan.
He didn't do it all the time, obviously, he'd have been thrown off the air years ago, but I always found it funny that he claimed the steelers as his team, but never really the Pirates, and only talked about the Penguins being his team when they were in the Stanley cup. The only Cleveland teams he was really into? The Cavaliers and Ohio State. Sounds like a bandwagon fan to me.

It's definitely the station, however, Rizzo gets ridiculous kickbacks. My dad works for one of the companies that RBS works with. His services at his home: free.
He's still the top dog in town. His ratings destroy anyone else's in sports. He's a great host. He's not perfect at times he loves to toot his own horn, but he repeats over an over that he's not some break-it-down type host. They don't go in depth. It's a lighter side of sports. The show is more reaction than anything.
I don't mind Hammer, although it's hilarious when he bags on Ohio State. He thinks OSU fans are bad (which they can be) but that's not limited to just Buckeye fans. You go to any city where they have a major big time program, and you'll see the same stuff. You don't think people down in Tuscaloosa or Austin aren't bad either? He's from Colorado, he went to college in NYC. He has never spent time in a college football crazy area.
I think part of it is an act though. When he talks Cleveland sports, I think he's valuable because I do believe he's very objective when talking about the teams in Cleveland.

WKNR canceled 3 Deep, is moving Je'Rod Cherry to RBS/Browns coverage and going with the ESPN national evening shows. I'm just guessing here, but they may have overextended themselves on the Browns contract and had to make some decent-sized cuts until the ad payments really start coming in from Browns games. I know the Browns are huge in this town, but I wonder if they really increased their ratings by cutting Rome and going with a 2-hour Browns show mid-day. I listen to Browns Daily occasionally, and they were stretching for a one-hour show at points last spring. I can't imagine how mind numbing it will be at double the length. 92.3 got the better deal out of the agreement, and I'm confident they paid well less than KNR. They get the games, Chud show, weekend Browns daily (which they buried in early AM), and postgame shows. KNR got pregame, Browns daily M-F and Chud show.
Its going to be uncomfortable for Reghi for a bit, I imagine. He was fired by WKNR, but still has his Browns contract to do the Chud show and pregame, from the KNR studios at times.
As I said above, I loved the off-topic things that Burge, Zuppe, etc. did at WKNR. I mean, you can only hear the same caller call in and say that Brandon Weeden looks good and that Norv Turner has been a good hire as OC, so many times. They kept things lively and they still worked sports in.
I do find it funny that in these dismissals, ESPN Cleveland no longer has an Indians beat reporter or Cavs beat reporter. The Cleveland ESPN affiliate does not have a dedicated reporter for 2/3 of the Cleveland professional teams.

Yup, just as the Cavs are entering an era where they might be pretty good.
Both Zuppe and Roda were passionate about the sports they covered too. It wasn't like they were just assigned to those teams and pretend to like the league and team.

So WKNR is essentially Browns shows, Rizzo and the national ESPN programs now? That's too bad. Less people to pay though I suppose. I wasn't necessarily a fan of many of the shows (Vic Carucci's daily show was excruciating to listen to at 1 hour...2 must be so much worse...I did like when Reghi and Roda had the evening drive show with Will Burge producing though) but it was nice that outside of Rome and Mike and Mike it was pretty much all local.

I had already transitioned to 92.3 in afternoons might as well add the 3Deep spot now. And like somebody else said RBS is live reads how rich Hammer is and boring as heck. I'm going to start checking out 92.3 in the a.m now. Or just go local since I stream on my phone. But don't think I could handle Squeeler talk all day.
Alsonthe new Browns Daily isn't as bad with Cherry and Nathan added in is definitely more energy than when it was just Vic.

Most people would have been mad anyway.
Maybe people get over it quicker, but I still think majority of fans would have been pissed if he did what all free agents do and call a press conference and thank everyone.
We'd still be hearing the same crap about how "Jordan didn't want to team up with Bird and Magic, he wanted to beat them" (Which is also crap, Bird and Magic were transcendent, once a generation type players, Chris Bosh is freaking Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade takes games off)

It's like a girlfriend telling you that she's leaving ..... quietly ... in private .......
Or a girlfriend telling you that she is leaving you ..... on the Springer show ...... and for your 400# 3rd grade English teacher.
The first one you can accept. It hurts. It's painful. It tears at you .. but you get over it.
The 2nd one leaves you open to ridicule, and also makes you think about revenge non stop.
Lebron gave Cleveland, and Cavaliers fans, the Springer show treatment when he left.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Totally disagree.
If he quietly signed with the Heat, and took out a full page in The Plain Dealer thanking Cleveland for all they've done for him...sure, we would've been pissed. Not denying that.
But the seething anger wouldn't have been as bad as it was, or as warranted. It was absolutely because of how he went about it.

Reghi knew his "stuff". He was just in love with the sound of his own voice. Never used 10 words when 30 would work. He's been that way since he was in Toledo. And what's with the paint job on his head?
I suspect that whoever said WKNR overextended themselves when they grabbed the Browns rights was correct.

I kind of can't believe you're saying that. Did you let Cowherd sway you, dude? (^ in jest)

People were still booing Jim Thome for YEARS. While Thome lied, he certainly went about his free agency the proper way. No TV show, no circus at IMG, none of that. Called a press conference and thanked everyone.
So, while it would have bee easier to get over, I don't deny that, people initially would have been mad, and would have called him out for "taking the easy way".
Even if you disagree with that, which is your opinion, the point of me saying that is that it's one of the most tired takes that sports talk callers have. They all say it like we've never heard it before, which is the best.

so, what you are saying is that LeBron, like Thome, will come back to Cleveland once he's on his last legs playing and help a completely unsuccessful bid at the playoffs.
I wonder who will play the part of Kenny Lofton who comes back a couple years earlier and helps lead a successful playoff bid. Perhaps Mo Williams?

When they get rid of Hooley, Brinda & Hammer, they'll be on the right track.

I sure hope he doesn't come back like Thome did. I could totally see a situation where he'd want that, after he's won X amount of titles in Miami and LA, and he's 37, put on 30-40 pounds, and just wants to try and smooth things over with Cleveland so he can get his number in the rafters, and a statue outside.
If you asked Dan Gilbert now about that situation and he' say no, but what if the Cavs are failing with bad attendance, and the casinos aren't doing well. He'd almost be forced to take him back.

I still miss Reghi doing Cavs games on TV but I have to admit Fred has grown on me.
