Can use some help on this one. My wife and I close on a house in two weeks and I still haven't decided on a cable/internet provider. Presently, I use DirecTV and then have a very limited internet through Verizon Wireless. Ideally, I'd like to combine services into one provider. I've been shopping for over a week now and haven't found a clear best choice. We're moving to Lyndhurst, so still in the Cleveland area. Time Warner is the safe choice, already in the house, etc. I really dislike their monthly equipment fees and a friend has it who lives near by the house and said he consistently has service that speeds up, slows down, and crashes. We don't use internet all that much, but still I'd like something reliable. We could keep DirecTV and add a different internet, but my dish has been terrible recently at cutting out, plus they're internet service is too pricey to add on and I cannot stand their installation fees. Also, its our first house, and I really don't want to hang a dish off of it, unless I have to. I've been really looking to ATT U-Verse, and generally like what I see. But, the price seems a little higher than the others and there appear to be some tech issues and durability concerns there as well. Anybody have experience with any of the providers? Pros/cons? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and if you look at pricing, NFL and MLB Network are absolute requirements for both my wife and I, so do bother pricing the basic packages for comparison..

You can buy your own modem and forego the equipment rental fees. Your friend may have an old modem or bad line. If you go cable internet and buy your own modem, make sure it is DOCSISĀ® 3.0, and check the providers list of acceptable modem. Typically the Motorola SurfBoard modems are accepted.

I had an old DOCSISĀ® 2.0 modem that gave me all kinds of trouble cutting out, and going offline, once I replaced it my troubles are few and far between.

Can't help you with "phone" internet like CenturyLink since I haven't used it in years, but a lot depends on the neighborhood, and the cabling there. May want to ask the neighbors in the area what they use and how satisfied they are.
