I'm slightly leaning PS4 right, however, I think Xbox has the better exclusives (Titanfall looks amazing) right now and I basically have no friends on PS network. Additionally I enjoy Halo quite a bit. Here is an infographic I found on reddit http://i.imgur.com/07duDiE.pngI encourage discourse, which way are you leaning or even pre-ordered?

I have them both pre-ordered, was 100% getting a PS4 after E3 but since MS has changed their stance I am going to wait a little longer until I decide, still leaning towards the PS4 though at this point in time.

I'm switching from the xbox world back to the playstation world.
I'm just tired of broken videogame consoles. I love my xbox360, but i had to have it fixed (where i'm without a console for a month or whatever and I paid shipping to microsoft) and then i ended up buying a new one when i had the same problem.
Time to switch it up and hope I can adapt to a new controller. I liked my PS2, but preferred Xbox controllers, so I played regular Xbox much more. I'm thinking the PS4 is the way to go. Hopefully those two analog buttons will be more comfortable for me on the new PS4 controller.
But I don't think I'm pre-ordering anything yet. I have to work over Christmas and New Years, so I know I'll get one of the systems (as I generally tend to buy myself a nice gift every christmas time, and the extra half time associated with both days will pay for it itself)

I preordered my PS4 the day after E3. Always been a Playstation Guy since 1997 and I will continue to do so. Playing The Last of Us right now and man that game is sooo good. I can't wait to see what Naughty Dog can do on the nextgen platform.
I don't think you are going to see too many third party exclusives. It is already rumored that Titanfall is just a timed exclusive but Respawn can't comment further and just said it's a possibility it can be on the PS4. With the PS4 and XBO being architecturally the same they already said it will take weeks to port a game from one system or another (included PC) instead of months. Expect GTA V to make it to the next gen consoles also via the PC version Port.
I will be buying Killzone Shadow Falls or Battlefield 4 (can't decide) at launch and Watchdogs. I'm leaning torward BF4 just because many of my friends will have it and just get KZ SF later on.
Anyone thinking about going Full Digital this time around? I have a few friends that say they are going to, but unless the digital price is going to be significantly less I'm sticking with a disc copy.

I like digital because you can just turn on the system and not worry about swapping discs, but it's really annoying when my ISP (CLEAR wireless) throttles my download speed when I'm downloading games from the store.

I might do that for my games but for my kids (Lego games) I will stay with the discs. My brother and I swap kids games all the time. He bought the Harry Potter Lego games and I bought the Batman ones and when our kids were done with them we swapped.

BF, you were the only one that mentioned it, but this is more of a j/c...
What's everyone's opinion on the MS's DRM/always-online/ok-nevermind drama? I guess I don't really understand the full impact of DRM on the average console gamer.
Two good buddies of mine play video games quite a bit, and they're all up in arms about the XBO. But after talking to them, I realized they're the same as me.
1. They and I have broadband internet, so they're already connected all the time. I could see this being a big problem when my service decides to crap out, but that's happened once in several years. Still, that would suck.
2. They and I don't share/pirate games (the DRM drama) This is the one that I just don't get. Sure, it would be better if I/we didn't have these restrictions, but this really doesn't impact me at all. I buy my games, I play them... and that's it. I haven't shared a game with someone since the days I used to toss a couple Nintendo cartridges into a backpack (couldn't carry them in my arms, I would end up dropping them) and walk them to a friend's house down the street. That was about 20 years ago (you know, when I was 10). When I want to try out a game to see if I like it, I DL the trail version. It's really not that hard.
I guess I could see DRM being an issue for PC stuff, but I really don't get it for an already restricted environment such as XBox. From what I understand (which I've already admitted might not be much), the people that lose the most with DRM are people that pirate games. If people are unwilling or unable to pay for games, I don't see them wanting to fork over $500 (yup, that's a 5, as in 1 more hundred than the PS4) for the console.
If I'm wrong/mistaken, someone set me straight.

Haha, great point about the kids today! I guess there actually are kids now who are the same age that I used to be, lol.
I have only recently run into the DRM issue as it relates to used games (GameStop). I am a big fan of the store, and only very rarely do I ever buy a game new. I played the last Assassin's Creed, and didn't have access to the multiplayer portion, but I played through the story just fine. I guess I was a little miffed when I realized that they put that restriction on there, but overall it didn't impact me. I can definitely see this being a huge issue with sports games, so point taken I guess.
One of my good buddies is a Marine, and he was recently deployed to Afghanistan. He really only used his laptop to game, but I definitely see how poorly implemented DRM would really suck for him.
Maybe I should clarify my question/opinion. I don't fully understand the backlash. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that a large majority of people who went bonkers over this stuff would then turn around and use it in the way Microsoft originally intended. The XBO is $100 MORE expensive than the PS4, and includes a long list of features that lends itself to being always connected.

If that was the only option, then yeah I think the people putting up a stink would still purchase it. I think a lot of the backlash was WHY are they doing this, it seems unneeded. And when Sony announced they didn't require an always online system and that the DRM policies would be no different from the PS3 it only further damaged MS campaign.

Right now I don't have the money to spend on buying a new console but if I did it would clearly be the PS4. I has PS2 and currently have a PS3, so there is a lot of brand loyalty and good times going on there. I have only had one incident with a playstation console in 14 years. I described the problem to Sony and they shipped me a brand new PS3 console straight away. It still remains probably some of the best customer service I've ever had. On another point, I have a crapload of games from PS1, PS2, and PS3 and have heard that the PS3 will not be backward compatible. I know this comes into play with production costs of building the console, but really? Come on Sony...Because I was concerned about this issue I researched online to see what I could find. They're supposed to have this stream type of system that allows backward compatibility. BUT if Sony thinks I am EVER going to pay for something I already have, well they have another thing coming. I guess I would have to keep my PS3 I know a lot of people who sell their current consoles to afford newer ones...

XBO is NOT backwards compatible, which sucks.
I thought I heard the PS4 WAS backwards compatible (because they learned their lesson with the PS3).

Not sure what you mean by learning thier lesson, the PS3 had B/C when it launched and it made the console too expensive and people weren't buying. They took it out dropped the price and now they have sold more units than the 360.
The PS4 is not backwards compatible. It would cost too much to add it. They said later on it might be able to play via the cloud gaming service Sony bought but many speculate you would either need to re-buy the version or pay for a premium subscription like Netflix to have unlimited access to the PS1/PS2/PS3 library but no further info on that service yet.

I buy mostly used games. I have been burned to many times by overhype 70 bucks for a game that was crap. Anyway everything i hear from the new xbox is a big disappointment to me. the advancement in kinect is really the only interesting thing about it for me.

Well you should be somewhat excited that X1 has rolled back all their DRM to the way it is now. As far as wasting money have you ever considered using a website like IGN or Gamesradar? These websites generally review games timely and most of the time offer good advice. I am pretty avid gamer so if you ever are considering a game shoot me an email and if I have played it I will give you my opinion on it my gamertag is Av1at0rs (for anyone who wants to add me)
I do think the kinect 2 looks like a much better improvement. I think the biggest thing for me is that kinect doesn't replace the controller but supplements it.I am also really interested in the touchpad on the PS4 controllers, but at this point do not like the dual sticks that are at the same level, I prefer the xbox 360 offset sticks.

Probably going to sit this one out for at least 1-2 years before a purchase.
My PS3 just took a dump too so that's getting replaced. The worst part is that it was the original console which had the backwards compatibility. Still a lot of classic PS2 games that I love. Ugh.

I'm mad they relented on their DRM personally. I like the idea of sharing games with 10 people without having to send them the disc. You and they, get the opportunity to play all you want... Could make a nice way of pooling games together between friends/family. But to each their own.
The offline playing capabilities would have been modified. There are people who play without connection (some deployed military is the most commonly used examples) that don't have the ability for the check in. In cases like that I think they should have allowed you to play offline with the disc in.

There are places that fix PS3's. I've got one of the original PS3's too. Backwards compatible. All the extra ports for memory cards and such. 80 megabyte. If/when it dies I'll get it fixed. I guess I've been lucky so far. I've owned Playstations since the first generation. My PS2 had an incredible amount of hours logged on it. My PS3 has fewer and now I use it mainly as a media server as I dont game much anymore. I've never had one die. Knock on wood.

Yeah, someone here recommended Gophermods. My blu ray drive had gone bad, and they fixed that, but just a few months laters now something else is bad. I don't want to drop another 100$ plus shipping to get it fixed. I may try locally but I'm just afraid something else will happen and I will have put 300 bucks into a machine.
If local can't do anything or if it's just too much to fix, I'm going to buy a slim. Maybe then I will look around for a cheap ps2.
Of course it comes out when The Last of Us gets released. Was only waiting a year and a half for it.

My Original Fatty took a crapper on me as well. It still works but unless I have the A/C on in my house turned down way down then the PS3 will run only about 20min before it beeps at me that it's too hot and needs to be turned off. Bought the God of War Bundle that came with 6 God of War games and a 500gb HDD for $300. Of coarse it helped that I had just won the NCAA Tourney bracket at work and we also had a $50 "performance bonus" and I was able to pay for most of it with that.
I'm thinking about putting my old one in a PC case a fun project to do now that I have a new one.

I'm not sure what's wrong with mine.
I can't get it to the menu screen. The lights are green on the front. I've read bout holding down the power and all those tricks, etc.. but they didn't work. A few times I was able to get a fuzzy looking screen asking about HDMI, but usually it's just a black screen.
I thought it might be a HDD issue, but I replaced it with a brand new one, and got the same result.
I don't want to pay the money to ship it off to Gophermods to only have them tell me it's not under the warranty from the bluray drive. I kind of already think it's not part of that warranty.

Was this before or after the latest update? (4.45). I've read that a lot of people updated and had their PS3 bricked. They are working on the issue. I haven't been on to update mine.
People who have this problem can't get to their login screen or menus. It will come on to the little wave then nothing else happens.

I had to modify my entertainment center. My PS3 is in the area with my stereo receiver which puts out a lot of heat. The shelf above it was stationary. I modified that shelf with drawer slides so that when I fire up the home theater I slide the PS3 shelf out enough that it breathes/vents well. Problem solved. If I had left it in that cubby with the receiver I'd have cooked it for sure.

If that were the issue, I wouldn't even know how to fix it without being able to get to the menu. There's no sound either so I don't even think the menu is on the console.

There is a fix on Thursday if it was the last update? Did you have an aftermarket HDD drive in it? heard that was one of the issues of the update.

Really?
Yeah I replaced it with an old laptop drive from work. Worked fine up until a few weeks ago. I think I tried replacing it with the original one and got nothing. Also tried a brand new one.

Yes, Safe Mode Access is:
1: Red Light (Standby) 2: Press and HOLD Power Button on Console 3: When you hear a Beep, KEEP HOLDING 4: When you hear a Second Beep, Wait a moment and Release Power. 5: Should be in Standby/Red Light Mode again 6: Press and HOLD Power Button on Console (A Second Time) 7: When you hear a Beep, KEEP HOLDING 8: When you hear Two Fast Beeps, Release Power Button Quickly
System Boots to Safe Mode Attach USB Cable and Controller Press PS Button
Warning: No Fix for 4.45 Bricks here yet though! Some Options in this menu will erase your messages, trophies, and even the entire hard drive. Use Only if you know what you're doing or if you've been told to do so.
To Fix the 4.45 Brick: (Most Likely) Boot to Safe Mode (as Above) ...Wait for Fix/Patch Firmware... Put on Flash Drive in /PS3/UPDATE Insert Flash Drive Select "6. Update Firmware" from Safe Mode Menu Let Fix/Patch Install..
Try that once the update is out on Thursday. I hope that works for you.

Objectively there have been some huge problems this generation.
360: Had the Red Rings of Death
PS3: Had its network hacked and now produced an update which bricked consoles.
Unless you're a fanboy its hard to have any real confidence in either. For the record I own both.

I am in the same boat, I own both, have had all 3 playstations so I am rooting for Sony, but will buy whichever system is "better". I for the most part prefer the 360 over my PS3.
I also have a Wii U and to be honest I love it. Unfortunately there arent a lot of games out just yet but as I get older I find myself playing enjoying more of the old nes classic games like Mario, DK, Mario Kart. I also love the second screen, my fiance is not a big gamer so the second screen comes in handy when she is watching her shows.

I have a Wii U and I love it too. True about the limited games, but I'm like you, I love the old NES games. I do have Batman Arkham City, which is awesome. Also, I love Legend of Zelda and I know it's only a matter of time before the Wii U has an original Zelda game. I have a Wii and a PS2, never had any probs with either, the kids have kinda taking control of the Wii, which is fine with me.

The Wii U for me is just too far behind graphically and conceptually. Additionally the main draw for the Wii U is 1st party Nintendo games which always review well do not do anything for me. I have never played a zelda game, could care less about platformers, and do not want a kart game.
For me the Wii U has become a very niche product and I do not fall into that niche. I want games like Titanfall, Witcher 3, Killzone, the Division...etc
I have owned or do own Sega Genesis, Atari, Nintendo, Xbox, 360, PS, PS2 ( I think this was the best console ever so far), PS3, and soon either the X1 or PS4.

I like all of the detail you've provided so far in this thread EXCEPT IGN...Have they become a bit more reliable in their reviews over the past year? Both their video and written reviews have been so biased towards the larger gaming companies the past few years I had to stop reading their stuff.

Reviews are subjective thus they are obviously far ranging opinions on games. I will usually read an IGN review, watch an Angry Joe review if available (he is crass, loud, and probably obnoxious but when he reviews a terrible game it is funny), maybe look at gamesradar or gamespot. Another good place is metacritic as it is a collection house for reviews. I typically read two reviews before I buy a game. Now with regards to big game publishers I typically buy big AAA games so I like big game publishers, sure I don't like all their decisions (DLC, micro-transactions,), but without them AAA gaming doesn't exist. I play some indies but usually they have to be spectacular like journey, braid, castle crashers..etc
To your assertion, you hear that complaint about all reviewers. Specifically with IGN I cannot think of a game that they endorsed as a great game 8 to 10 that I did not also agree was a great game. Now I may disagree with the strengths and weaknesses of the games sometimes or feel somethings weren't highlighted that should have been but their reviews generally inform me of what I need to know. With all that said I can't think of a game that was billed as a 8, 9 or 10 that I regretted purchasing. Additionally IGN has great wikis, game guides, and a ton of general game information even if you choose to ignore the reviews. I think it would be a mistake to only look at one review for a game but as general place to go for information about games I think IGN is really good website. ( I used to like gamesradar but their format change turned me off) Off my IGN soapbox and for the record I nor my family have anything to do with IGN its just a website I like.
