Happy Memorial Day everyone.

All of those in my family who have served are gone now. My Uncle was the last former serviceman in the family, (and a former POW) and we lost him a year and a half or so ago.

He was shot down over Germany, and survived The Death March at the end of the war. He never talked about his experiences. It always struck me as rather odd that he had German Shepherds when he returned home, even though they were, essentially, additional guards at the POW camp he was held in. I think that he did so as his own sort of affirmation that they could not break him.

Anyway, to all of the who have served our country ......... to those who have sacrificed so much ........ and to those who have given their all .... thank you all.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I'll head out on Monday with some flowers to the National Cemetary. I'll work the rows for a while.....sometimes a few mintues, sometimes a hour or more. Have to find the right grave. Then I'll lay the flowers down and say a few words.

I look for kids.... men or women who don't seem to get much attention, and then spend 30 or so minutes. People who are just buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery.....people who's families are long gone, one way or another, be it moved away or dead.

On Memorial Day I'm always sad he's gone but proud of my father and his service to this country. He was in WWII, in Patton's 3rd Army in the 206th Combat Engineers. When he left the Army he was a Captain. The below picture shows my father on the right on May 5th 1945 in Scharding, Germany where he received his Bronze Star for commanding river crossings of the Moselle and Saar rivers in Nov and Dec 1944. At the time he was a 1st LT and commanded B company of the 206.

The gentleman to his right is Sgt. Rocco F. Palermo, who was also decorated on the same day with what also appears to be a Bronze Star. That's all I know about him is his name on the back of the photo.

Change "Happy" to "Solemn" or "Reverent" and the blinky-flashy graphic that looks like an appliance store advertisement might carry the appropriate message.

My Uncle served in Vietnam. He was buried yesterday. A Navy representative was there yesterday, and played taps at the gravesite. It was moving. Bless your heart Uncle Bob. We all love you and will miss you.
