Needing some advice on which phone to get. My upgrade is Friday and I'm in desperate need of a phone.
The main worry I have with cell phones is almost every phone I've gotten in the past has been great in the beginning, then it gets slower and slower as time goes on, becoming almost unusable by the time two years is up.
I also want something that's going to have a good battery. My phone now is dead within 5 hours of coming off the charger. It's really annoying.
I listen to a lot of music on my phone, and browse the internet quite a bit. The ability to add music to my phone without going through iTunes is what is kinda keeping me away from an iPhone.
So what would you recommend? iPhone? Note 2? Galaxy S4?
Hoping some of you more tech savvy guys out there can help me out!

I have an I-Phone 4 and to be honest, I can get a new one right now. actually as of last Thursday to be exact. My phone is only slightly slower and seems to generally work perfectly.
I'm intent on another I-phone but am open to others. In the end, I'll end up going I-phone
I'm thinking they have more apps as well.

Why?
Someone could come in here and say
"iPhone /thread"
But I'm looking for someone to tell my why you think the S4 is the best option.

A friend of mine has one of those phablets....the large screen is amazing. If you don't mind that size for a phone, it might be something to consider.
I have a Droid X, 3 1/2 years and it's still as fast as when I got it. I watch a lot of streaming video and surf the net and it does fine for that...I'm not sure how much 4g will improve things. I don't listen to much music. I've been letting my wife and son use my upgrades, and we're due for another now. I'm just going to wait until this phone dies I think.

I have an iphone4 as well and can upgrade but I'm perfectly happy with mine right now - works as well now as the day I got it - don't think the battery drains unless I'm somewhere where it's constantly looking for service

I know your not looking for an IPhone 3GS but that is what I have. For about 14 months now, got it for free to upgrade to "SMART" and it runs like the day I got it. Battery is still good, the 3G internet runs really well for me in my area. When I can upgrade to the 4 or 5 in 9 months or so, I don't know that I will.

In December I upgraded to the Note 2 from the Droid Charge. The change has been amazing. It took approximately 15 minutes to get over the size of the screen, and honestly, I don't see myself ever going smaller. It has a 2gb quadcore processor, so there is absolutely no lag time when I am switching to different apps. The muli-window feature works really well now with the upgrade on Verizon last week. Testing the 4g connection I got 20mb download vs. 10 on the Charge. I don't know if that's due to the processor or what. Best part, under heavy use, I get at least 2 day on a battery charge. Oh, if the battery ever stops taking a charge, I can simply swap it out with one ordered for under $20 from Amazon. You can also expand the member with the ability to add via an SD card. The last 2 sentences are why I never went with the Iphone.

I have an iPhone 5 and since it's LTE now, it's darned fast. I put the phone down last night the battery was fully charged showing 100%, this was around 6:00PM. When I got up this morning it was at 99%.
That's my preference however. I'm invested into the iPhone architecture with two of them and two iPads. So naturally I'm going to try and validate my choice and say, "iPhone Rulz". Okay, I'll probably never actually say, "iPhone Rulz" but you know what I mean.
With what you put out as your requirements, your old phone is slow and you run out of power, I wouldn't get an iPhone. All the newer phones are going to be fast compared to what we've had in the past and it's obvious that you're concerned about battery life. My suggestion is only to look for phones with a removable battery and carry a fully charged, second one, with you.

I have a IP4 and I notice that it's slower. I'm also a little upset that I didn't get the panoramic update that the 4s got with one of the latest updates to iOS.
A guy I work with is a giant honk for the S4, almost to the point where I want to take it and throw it out the window. The funny thing is, Galaxy lovers and even their commercials talk about how Apple honks are when in reality they are becoming worse.
The thing I like about Apple is that they are always trying to get better. You get updates a few times a year with little changes. When you open up a Samsung phone, that's pretty much what you get. They don't update their OS as much as Apple does. The phone in turn becomes obsolete when their newer model comes out. My Iphone 4 is just slowly starting to become obsolete and that thing has been out 3 years. I really think the Iphone evolves more.
For the most part I think both phones do pretty much the same thing, outside of the app store for Apple being better.

Well... given the two priorities you laid out, I'd probably go with the S4. Its simple to add music via USB, you can add a bunch of storage via a micro SD card to hold it all and it has a big enough screen to comfortably browse the Internet.
I have an S3 for work and I like it well enough. For me, Apple's IOS > Android, but it isn't a big enough deal to have a second phone for personal use. The screen is really nice and its a pretty fast phone. It's a little big for my taste, but I've gotten used to it. Its easy to switch between open apps and Android can be customized in more ways (if that's important to you).
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices you're considering, but I think the S4 will be the best fit for the way you've described your phone usage.
Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks for your input, everyone!
The S4 is kind of the way I've been leaning, anyway.
Even the most loyal iPhone users I know have told me that for what I use my phone for, the iPhone probably doesn't fit my needs the best.
I've never had an iPhone, I've always had Android and I've been happy for the most part.
The one complaint I've had is that they tend to get slow after about the first year. I have the Bionic right now -- Had it for two years. The first year, it was great, but the last year, I've noticed a lot of my apps force close all the time, and stuff like that.

Have you ever owned an Ipod touch? They are basically the same thing. Iphone is slightly thicker and obviously has phone functions, but outside of that the layout and apps are all the same...

I think that's due to the operating system updates.
Since the upgrade to Jellybean from Ice Cream Sandwich. I'm getting a lot of that now and my keyboard takes a few seconds to show up when I'm replying to a text. Never had anything like that before the update, using S3.

A lot of it also comes from bloatware that the device manufacturer puts in as well. In fact, Samsung will never update their phones if their "skin" doesn't fit onto the O/S even though the O/S will run perfectly fine without it. You could improve your speed by running a custom rom, but that would require some knowledge on how to get that far.

Chiming in late, but is there a reason you aren't looking at the HTC phones?
I'm not a tech guru when it comes to smart phones but I've done probably 20 hours of homework on these over the last month as I'm about to upgrade my 2-year old phone as well, and it came down to the S4 and the HTC One.
It doesn't really sound like you have to have the newest and greatest phone. You can get an S3 or an HTC Evo 4G LTE much cheaper than the newest phones and they'll do everything you want and then some.
As an aside and just for general discussion, I was just about to pull the trigger on an S4 instead of the HTC One, then started consistently seeing that the S4 has a flaw in the texting arena where the auto-correct is busted or essentially disabled. I've asked around and nobody as been able to tell me it will work as well as the One in that area. What I can't stand about the One is that there's no swapping out batteries as the case can't be opened. Idiotic move. That problem doesn't exist on the Evo 4G, as I put in the larger battery that comes with a larger case, and that would give me two or even three days without ever having to put the phone on a charger, as long as I didn't tear up the 'net on the phone. That's something to think about, man.
I stay away from iphones for the sole reason that I love to be able to play with the settings, icons, widgets, backgrounds, etc on the Android phones. With the iphones what you see is what you get. The level of customization is nothing compared to the Android phones. Of course that also means it's more susceptible to viruses and the like.
The truth is that unless one is absolutely dying to get the most modern innovations on a phone, the generation from a year or two ago is greater than what you need. I'm only getting a new phone because my Evo 4G hit the ground without a case and is busted-up. The camera is broken and the drop caused the battery-life to be cut in half. I suspect the busted camera is drawing the life off the battery, but if I'm going to pay to have the phone repaired I might as well get a new one to play with.

I have had my Galaxy S4 for about 3 weeks now. I gotta tell ya, I'm VERY impressed with it. The battery life is awesome, I've been putting it through stress tests too. Video, Gaming, pictures, high settings on most everything just to see how long it would last. I've not had to recharge it at all during the day. Even when I had to go to Key West and take pictures all day long for my lady's family. (cause I had the best camera of course). Oh, and when I do plug it in to charge, it does not take forever to charge either. Very quick to recharge.
The screen is amazing, very clear and sharp. Colors are natural and vibrant.
Call quality is the best I've ever had on any phone. The people I call tell me that it is like they are sitting next to me. No bad background noise (even when I'm driving with the window down).
4G speed internet when I'm not connected to WIFI. Very easy to use. I'm loving Android 4.2.2.
16GB internal HDD with a SD card slot to upgrade for another 64 if I want it. (I haxe a 16GB SD card in there now, it's what I had hanging round).

. If your phone is experiencing force closes than you probably need to do a Factory Reset. I also have the Bionic and it is faster now then day one and I also have a 32 GB memory card full of music and about 9000 songs on my phone between the card and uploaded music to Google play music... Factory Resets aren't fun but no different then a new phone. There is no reason your phone should be slow..Jelly Bean is a more optimized OS.
as for the naming of the OS...
it's just a code name for easier remembering...
F. for Froyo ( frozen yogurt) G. for Gingerbread H. for Honeycomb I. Ice Cream Sandwich J. Jelly bean
don't take it so serious... easier to remember than 2.0 - 2.1.2 - 3.0 - 3.2.1 - or 4.0

Disclosure: I haven't touched the S4 or the One, so for what it's worth...
Get the HTC One. Basically, it's an S4, without some of the cool software features that you'll never use, plus an iPhone industrial design. It's a very nice phone. You should at least check it out.
Also, go to the Google Play store and look at the Nexus. If you have ATT or T-Mobile, I would highly recommend the Nexus if you want to replace your phone without signing a new contract. I have the Nexus, and it gets the job done. No bloatware, as it's just stock Android (and you get the updates straight from Google vs your carrier, so they'll come faster if that's important to you). It costs $300, but keep in mind, that's without signing a new contract ( just buy the phone at play.Google.com and swap in your SIM card and you're gtg. The hardware won't be bleeding edge, but it's up there with the latest.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Smart phones have gotten better chips and more memory in the last couple models, that they should not have the bogging own that earlier models had as they aged.
My Galaxy S3 is 6 months old and runs as good as day 1.
First question you need to ask yourself is do you want iOS, Android or Windows? Which have you had in the past? What are you using your phone for?
I know several people who went from Android to iOS or vice versa, and in all cases they didn't like the new phone as well. You get used to something, and we often don't wish to relearn, so the little things each does or doesn't do become little annoyances.
So keep prior experience in mind when choosing.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I'm not saying get it by any means, but I would strongly urge you to at least look at the new line of Blackberry Phones. Im hearing they are phenomenal.
