New Hampshire man no longer top banana after losing life savings on carnival game
Published April 30, 2013

What a banana.

A New Hampshire man says he squandered his life savings playing a rigged carnival game in hopes of winning an Xbox game system.

Henry Gribbohm, 30, of New Hampshire, told WBZ-TV that he ended up losing $2,600 playing Tubs of Fun at a Fiesta Shows' carnival. The next day, he said he complained to a person running the game and was given $600 and a large stuffed banana with dreadlocks.

To some, a large stuffed banana may suffice, but Gribbohm later filed a report with the Manchester Police Department claiming that the game was rigged. The department told the station that it is investigating the matter.

Tubs of Fun is notoriously challenging. Gribbohm told the station that he practiced and thought he had a knack for it. But once the game began the balls started popping out of the water. His only explanation: "It's not possible that it wasn't rigged."

Like a down-on-his-luck Blackjack player, Gribbohm began making riskier bets to win back some money and told WBZ-TV that at one point he dropped $300 in a few minutes. He went home and got another $2,300, he told the station.

The game is operated by an outside party and Fiesta told the station that it will also investigate Gribbohm’s allegations.

"For once in my life, I happened to become that sucker," he said.

You have to go to the link to see the guy pushing a stroller with the dreadlocked banana on it.

Several scary things about this..

1. Guy dropped $2,600 trying to win a $250 prize.
2. Guy has a stroller, which means he has already procreated.
3. Guy actually practiced to try to beat the carnival game.
4. Guy is 30 years old and still wants a gaming system that badly.
5. ..........

You see, THIS is why I tend to be in favor of human euthanasia. My only holdback on it is that I don't trust the freaking morons that would administer the program

he specifically said after he lost $300 that he went home to get another $2300. so, he was already having it in his head he might need all that $$$.

The guy is an idiot but this part may save him. I'm not a lawyer and I don't know New Hampshire law but paying to play a carnival game to win a prize is one thing but double or nothing for $$ might not be legal. As far as I know a carnival can't set up a roulette table and let people gamble money, what the game operator did would be closer to roulette than playing a game to win a prize.

Xbox or Xbox 360?

Anyone that would attend a carnival might not know the difference.

I would just be worried about stirring up the carny community with this lawsuit. Those people are freaky.

I think the knowledge that carnival games are rigged are about up there with the knowledge that pro wrestling is fake. But...

...if there's a way to prove that the game/XBox prize can't be won due to rigging, isn't there actually some validity to the suit?

No. Unless they said "1 out of 100" win, or "1 out of 1 million win".

The guys a dumbass. An xbox costs, what, $150 bucks? $200?

Why not just go buy one.

xBox 360 w/kinect at Best Buy : $299.99
Life Savings: $2600.00

3rd Grade math : $2600 - $299.99 = $2300.01

Double or nothing is normal at those games. Because the size of the prize is dependent on how many times you win. First you win a trnket, then you win again and trade in your trinket for a tiny stuffed animal, and so on.

So double or nothing just means you are buying to bypass the low-end prizes. The chances of winning the "top" prize anywhere near what you could just go buy it for are next to improbable.

You guys are missing the point,, we're talking about a 30 year old, with a child and his entire life savings is 2600.00.. Now tell me something. All you responsible folks out there.. didn't you have more at 30?

I would not have, had I been trying to supply all my worldly possessions through carnival gaming.

but I guess that's why you included the "All you responsible folks".

At 30 with no kid, yes.

At 40 with a kid in $1,000/month pre-school, no.

(assuming you mean "cash in a savings account" not a 401k, college fund, IRA, and other assorted non-liquid assets).

Of course there is validity to his suit if they can prove that the game can't be won....

That still doesn't diminish this guys stupidity for dumping thousands of dollars trying. Watch, he will go to court, win, and get a settlement of 10 times his life savings... as carnivals line up to find space in New Hampshire...

The only reason he didn't lose $10,000 is because he didn't have $10,000.

They called it his "entire life savings".. so yeah, I'm including all that.. Did you have more at 30?

I sure as hell did.

the article mentions "life savings" not "entire life savings" so I could see it being read either way. it is obviously the money he on-hand he could get quickly.

I disagree. The type of person who attends a carnival knows very well the difference between the two. Probably very well versed in cellular phone and phone plans too.

No kidding man. If I didn't, I wouldn't be at the carnival. I'd be seeking overtime or working a 2nd job.

At least it was New Hampshire. If it was Tennessee most would be making fun of Southerners.

I suppose he could be of southern heritage, but most southerners don't head off for New Hampshire.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

He could have kept his money tucked away in there anyway.
