I have a question for those of you who are good with automobiles. My 2005 F-150 automatc transmission truck is having an issue where I'm driving, getting up to speed around 30mph then it slips out like I put it in neutral. If I click overdrive off then this issue doesn't happen. Any ideas? I haven't taken it to a repair shop because of the easy solution of the Overdrive off button. I'm also miserly and don't like spending money!

The problem is that you're driving a Ford. Actually I seem to recall that some Ford trucks have some sort of a clip in the transmission that breaks and mucks up the 4th/OD gear. You have to take it apart to fix it. Then again, this is from memory ...... and from many years ago when I sold cars ....... so take it for what it's worth.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

when it quits does it actually like drop out of gear where the truck rolls to a stop? Or is it just not stepping up to the next gear?
If it's the latter, it could be a snap ring, which will cost a $1000 -1500 probably

So this happens when I forget to press O/D OFF
I'll be driving and all of a sudden it's like my passenger reached over and put the truck in neutral. The engine revs to 2500-3000 before I can take my foot off the gas.
Then I let it go back down to 1300 or so rpm and then I click O/D OFF and I keep driving.
Am I hurting anything by doing this?
And FYI I love the truck its got 115k miles and I would certainly drive it another 100k if I could.

Well if it is the nsap ring it would depend on if it's just worn or broken. if broken the peices are flopping around inside your gear box and can eventually cause damage, if worn it may hold out a little. But either way I wouldn't chance it, as the repair cost can only go up from there.

Ok thanks for the advice. (you too Ytown!)
I've been driving around like this for about 4 months. It sounds like I better do something before it becomes a larger issue.

The larger issue,as I'm sure you've realized,is that your gas mileage is taking a major hit by not utilizing that extra gear. First thing to do is look on the internet,fordtrucks.com would be a good place to start. There is a listing of recalls and there's some knowledgeable people on that site. 115k for an F150 is barely past the break in stage.Tkae good care of them and they'll last a looong time.

No problem. There used to be a site named chevrolettrucks.com,but none of Y-town boys could spell it so it was renamed redneckhillbillytrucks.com.Unfortunately it had to close. It seems the Chevy boys had to spend so much time working on thier vehicles that they had no time to go to the library to use a computer.

I'm a Ford convert. Was never really a fan until my company only let us choose from Ford vehicles. LOVE my Taurus! Now, we're thinking Ford when it's time to buy another car for my husband. (though, I will admit, I'm still a 'vette girl and probably always will be - love me some good, ground pounding, fast racecars.)

Never heard that before. /sarcasm
A ridgeline compared to a full sized truck? I don't think so. Honda makes a descent car but they are not exactly the first to come to mind for trucks.

Try f150online.com, at least I think that's it. I have it on my computer at work, but i think that I'm close. Just google it and it will show up. Those boys on that site know their stuff. I have a 2000 F150 Xcab, stepside, 4X4 Off Road package that takes no prisoners. I've got 162,000 miles on it and it's still pulling my 7,000 lb. camper. I don't think the Honda could do that new.

That's a correct addy. Love the stepsides.I had an '02 xcab fire engine red SXT.240k ran great.Lost it in a garage fire. I now have an 07 xcab black on black. It's nice, but it's not Big Red. Thinking about trading it in on an explorer.Local dealer has a black 2012 Limited, that is one bad ass vehicle.

I just donated my 1992 F150 after 230,000 miles, but it was a 5-speed manual, so I have no advice on the trans problems you're having. But I replaced it with a fairly low-miles 2006 F150, so I'll be interested in what you find out when you finally get it fixed. They're great trucks, but I have to say I miss the response of a manual trans. My '06 automatic seems kind of stodgy, acceleration-wise, in comparison.

On overdrive button generally means that you are engaging a solenoid valve of some sort to cause the transmission to go into overdrive.
With transmissions is is difficult to tell if the fault is external, and fairly inexpensive to fix, or internal and very expensive to fix.
I would suggest that you look up recall notices to see if the problem is systemic, and change the oil and oil filter in the transmission first.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

General reply ..... I am considering replacing my 1992 Dodge Dakota. It still runs great .... the air is nice and cold ....... and everything works ..... but I am just concerned about driving a vehicle that is now old enough to drink. I love my Chryslers. I used to sell them, and have owned many over my days ..... and had great luck across the board. I'll buy another the replace my Dakota. (Maybe a minivan .... less expensive and I can still manage to sit in it with my back the way it is)
