I think Tom Brady is being smart here by allowing NE to continue to be competitive and he is still handsomely paid. He, of course, could be paid $20mil or more per season if he forced the issue. He is not forcing the issue and is trusting Kraft/Belichick/NE to use the savings on the team. Hopefully, Flacco does NOT take note of this and either screws the Baltimore cap or moves onto another team (hurting their team). Quote:
The upshot of the deal is to give the Patriots massive cap relief in a flat-cap era. He was due to count $43.6 million on the New England salary cap in 2013 and 2014. Now, his cap numbers will add up to $28.6 million in the next two years, a savings of $15 million in cap dollars at a time the Patriots have free agents they want to sign to help keep the team atop the AFC East, which they have dominated since Brady took over at quarterback in 2001.
After the Patriots move money around to lessen the blow of Brady's money in a flat-cap era -- the NFL's salary cap is expected to be virtually the same in the next two years as it was last season, about $121 million a year -- here will be Brady's cap numbers over the next five seasons, according to a source with knowledge of the contract:
2013: $13.8 million 2014: $14.8 million 2015: $13 million 2016: $14 million 2017: $15 million
The Patriots can do this by guaranteeing his salaries for the next three and giving him much of the money in a chunk of a bonus right now. That, the source with knowledge of the contract said, is what the Patriots intend to do. And history points to Brady doing the same thing eight offseasons ago.

At some point the career becomes more about winning than money. Im sure he is not hurting for cash one bit, and I'm sure he has been somewhat smart about not wasting it on lavish parties and nights in the strip clubs.

I've always wondered why more guys don't do this (outside of just plain greed). If you've already gotten a few big contracts and you're pretty set for life, why not reduce your pay and say to the front office "go get me some support."
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

that's the thing though. he's done it his whole career (every contract has been significantly less than other QBs signings at the time). he hasn't bothered getting all that many national endorsements either (compared to say Peyton Manning).
makes it hard to hate on the guy.

I think it is genius of both Brady and the team to keep doing this. In 2010, he extended his contract...In 2012 he restructured a 5.75m base salary, 6m roster bonus, and 250k workout bonus into a 950k salary and 10.8m signing bonus. The signing bonus is prorated (across 3 years in 2012) giving Brady the same amount of money (assuming the 250k workout bonus stayed), but reducing his cap hit from 12m to about 4.5m. Now in 2013 he restructures again, fully guaranteeing himself 60m over the next 5 years and again reducing his cap hit. He could have received more money, sure, but he'd likely never have seen it. He wins by getting 60m guaranteed (not all of which was guaranteed before) and by getting more talent by reducing his cap, all at low risk to him. The Pats win by getting a lower cap number, keeping their franchise guy for 3 more years, and getting him for a "reasonable" salary, with the risk of dead cap money if he's not around for any of his last seasons. Quite brilliant on both parts. I'm surprised that we haven't seen this from other teams for their elite players. If we were in dire straights from a cap perspective, we could do something similar with Joe Thomas, for example. For no difference in total dollars (if he played the whole contract out) or time, we could restructure him to give him $1m salary this year and $1m salary next year, give him a 22.5m signing bonus and the rest of his contract stays the same 2015-2018 and we'd lower his cap hit year by 5.7m and next year by 6.6m (though to be honest, I'm not sure if the remaining 3.6m of his current signing bonus then escalates. even if it did, that's still 2.1m difference. and playing with roster bonuses, workout bonuses, etc... could make that number larger easily). It is a little risk taking by the team, assuming the player will be around and playing at a high level near the end of the contract, but brilliant if it works out and very befitting a time when win now and don't worry about the future seems to rule the NFL. edit: the contract info I used as a baseline for JT was from http://www.spotrac.com. The example I used above in numbers, below: Code:
JT Current Contract: BASE SAL. S. BONUS MISC. BONUS CAP HIT 2013 10,000,000 1,200,000 200,000 11,400,000 2014 10,900,000 1,200,000 200,000 12,300,000 2015 8,800,000 1,200,000 200,000 10,200,000 2016 8,300,000 - 1,200,000 9,500,000 2017 8,800,000 - 1,200,000 10,000,000 2018 8,800,000 - 1,200,000 10,000,000 63,400,000
JT Potential Contract: BASE SAL S. BONUS MISC. BONUS CAP HIT 2013 1,000,000 4,500,000 200,000 5,700,000 2014 1,000,000 4,500,000 200,000 5,700,000 2015 8,800,000 4,500,000 200,000 13,500,000 2016 8,300,000 4,500,000 1,200,000 14,000,000 2017 8,800,000 4,500,000 1,200,000 14,500,000 2018 8,800,000 - 1,200,000 10,000,000 63,400,000

I'm a UM fan and I still don't like the guy (professionally) he comes across as a whiner and a dbag... Any time anyone comes near him he's expecting a flag..

not sure why you think he would never see it.
comparison: Drew Brees signed a 5yr/$100mil contract with $45mil in the first year of the deal in 2011. In 2 years, he has already received nearly the same guaranteed money that Brady will receive over the next 5 years and it's doubtful that the Saints are cutting him this offseason.

Peyton Manning is receiving $96mil over 5 years though much less is guaranteed because of his injury concerns. He has to pass a physical each year. Only $6mil in bonus on that and $12mil in salÛry. Not sure how much is guaranteed for the upcoming year.

Lets say he got 80m instead of 60m, with that last 20 not being guaranteed. We could all but bet all (if not all, the vast majority) would be backloaded. So instead of his cap numbers being 13m, 14m, and 15m at 38, 39, and 40 years old, it'd be closer to 19m, 20m and 23m at 38, 39, and 40 years old.
While he might be able to play at the high level those numbers would require until the age of 40, I'm thinking not. Just an opinion.

Apparently Tom Brady has a net worth of $100 million. Gisele has a net worth of $250 million. It's not like they're hurting for money. Their family is set for life and the important thing to Brady right now is winning another ring. Plus, the guy is still getting paid millions and millions of dollars, so it's the perfect situation for him IMO.

Deeezy:
Because I'm not a College Football Fan, and only have love for the MAC (because I'm a BG Falcon), I never gave a hint of a hang for the OSU/UM rivalry.
As such, I've always been able to enjoy the Tom Brady Story.
6th round pick. Dark horse. Small-time baller, made good?
I'm all-in for him.
I LOVE that he's been a "team playa" for his entire career. I love that he beat the odds, to become a first-ballot HOF'er. I love that he wasn't even loved by his own college homers... and then "blew up," once he got to the NFL.
"Rags-to-riches" stories always resonate with me.
And now- we hear that he's giving up bux to help the team... in an era of "It's all about me- and what I can get...."
Dude is "Old School."
Clemmy can get behind a mindset like that.
Dawggy-Dawg: Take off your OSU Scarlet + Gray goggles for just moment.... Brady is what we ALL want the NFL to be-
Luvya, Bro- but you just GOTTA dump the "college tribalism" thing, yo- It's a New World...
"too many notes, not enough music-"

I agree.. not a fan of UM or of the Patriots but Brady is what every NFL team is looking to find. The only thing you left off his resume to like about the guy is his supermodel wife.
