I didnt even think they could retire.

ROME—Pope Benedict XVI intends to resign at the end of this month as he feels he lacks the energy to continue in the job, his spokesman said Monday.

The pontiff announced his plans in the Vatican in Latin at a consistory meeting on Monday, the spokesman said.
The resignation, which will be effective at 1900 GMT on Feb. 28, means that a new pope should be in place by Easter, the Vatican spokesman said.

After a few months of the introduction of the new Pope there will be world wide disapproval of him. Pope Benedict will be brought back in as Pope Classic.

85 years old, doesn't feel up to the task, I guess it makes sense.

Great, just great. Ohio is likely going to be a battleground state for the election of the new Pope, so we should expect endless TV commercials and radio ads touting Pius XIII over Clement XV and vice versa. Thank God for DVR.

so now, the Cardinals will all meet and the Christian world will await the smoke from the pillars to indicate a decision is made.

awaiting everything going up in smoke. hey, our Cleveland sport teams modeled themselves after this process.

The last Pope could barely walk or speak before he passed, as I recall others in similar state, which is why I always thought Pope's were Pope's until death.

Do you expect that St. Malachy would be better at it than the Mayans? I don't know, but seeing how the world is going.... Well, it isn't hard to understand that maybe St. Malachy won't be too far of if at all.

The Mayans didn't predict the end of the world, just the end of a baktuhn and the end of a processional wobble period. Malachy's prophecies are rather interesting, especially considering the last 4 popes. True or not, it's still interesting. Won't you wonder if the next pope chooses Peter for his name? Either the college of cardinals are intentionaly following the prophecy, or Malachy would have been the greatest sports book of all time.

Well, we will have to wait and see what happens. If things follow as Malachy prophesied then we probably don't have a very long time to wait. Very likely within my lifetime.

FYI, I think all of you would agree that this guy would make a great Pope:
