http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/cincinnati-bengals-lineman-arrested-with-gun-at-airport-011813ATLANTA (AP) Cincinnati Bengals tackle Andre Smith was free on bond Friday after his arrest on a charge of carrying a loaded gun at Atlanta's airport. Smith, 25, of Birmingham, Ala., was arrested around 4:50 p.m. Thursday at a security checkpoint at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. A .38-caliber handgun was found in his carry-on bag, said Atlanta police Sgt. Greg Lyon. Smith was charged with carrying a weapon in an unauthorized location and was taken to the Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro - about 20 miles south of Atlanta. He posted $3,000 bond Friday, according to court records. Smith made his initial court appearance Friday and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 4, according to court documents. Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said franchise officials will not comment on ongoing legal matters, and a call to Smith's attorney was not immediately returned. Smith was a first-round draft pick in 2009 out of Alabama. Jon Allen, a TSA spokesman, said Smith's loaded gun is the third firearm recovered at the airport in 2013. ''We continue to remind passengers of the importance of looking through carry-on bags to ensure there are no prohibited items inside,'' Allen said. He added that firearms may be packed into checked baggage. With 100 guns being confiscated from passengers' bags in 2012, the world's busiest airport also ranked first nationally in terms of the number of weapons seized from passengers.

Wouldn't it make sense at this point for the Bengals to hire an in-house criminal defense attorney.

Everyone gives Maualuga crap for driving a Sunfire after getting to the NFL. You have to remember that he took a big pay cut when he left USC.
And how dumb do you have to be to take a loaded gun into an airport?

It was Shaun Rogers back in the spring 3 or 4 years ago.. but it happened and yes, it was considered dumb.. I think his was packed in some luggage and he claimed he didn't know it was there or something like that...

I was just about to say, "there was also another guy that did it in the same offseason".
And there you have it.

Man, that's almost as stupid as joining another team's message board, creating a fake screen name, and pretending to be a fan of that team through 950 miserable posts....
....not a whole lot of things make sense when discussing the Kentucky Bungles though.

Not being a gun guy, I have to ask this question, is there a legal way to transport a gun on an airplane? I mean does a method even exist to do that?
Just wondering

Barry Swisher (I think that's his name) former HC of the Cowboys was popped at an airport for carrying a loaded weapon.. Hell, that was before 9/11
I don't remember if a Browns player was every popped for that. (ahh, I see that question has been answered.. wow, two of them and I just didn't remember)

Yes, you just have to fill out a form and put it in your checked baggage.

What he said. Our troops actually fly commercially fairly often and some check their M-16s.

That makes sense since you would have a helluva time getting to the cargo hold from inside the plane I guess..
thanks

Maybe I'm being Captain Obvious here, but, checked baggage, being the key part of that statement. I'm willing to bet that the paperwork is just a quick check-in-the-box type thing. These guys are getting caught with the guns in their carry-on baggage.
