http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8454283/miami-dolphins-sign-vet-wr-jabar-gaffney-cut-legedu-naaneeIs this a massive story? No. BUT I have to ask why the front office doesn't look at guys like this. Gaffney pulled in close to a 1000 yd season last year. Yes, he's older and yes he's lost a step but the guy is a reliable reciever and could maybe act as a teacher to our receivers. The biggest failure of this offseason was to not land a proven veteran receiver to aid Weeden's development and to show our rooks how to ball.

dont disagree with that sentiment.
I thought Plax would be a perfect guy for us to grab. a WR with size and soft hands and is a big time threat in the red zone. Imagine what that finish coulda looked like if we had Plax for those last two plays...

Gaffney lost his spot with the Pats because he would drop keys balls when needed....so nah, don't really want him.
I would be interested in Plax....but I understand why the FO wouldn't/didn't want him around this young team. And not because he's a criminal. They wanted to see the youth grow and take ownership of the team. Bringing in an aged vet to steal catches doesn't help in that area.
Something tells me Plax will be getting a call from the Jets with Holmes being out for the year.

Yeah, I think that the team is 100% committed to developing the young WRs on the roster. They might wind up bringing up a guy like Cooper from the practice squad ...... but I really don't see them bringing in older players who are well past their primes.
I do wish that we would have found a veteran WR in the off-season. Cribbs, who received no time at WR in the pre-season, has been our most consistent receiver behind only Massaquoi. If both guys are healthy for game 5, I would expect that they get a much larger part of the playing time pie.

Are we 100% sure we didn't call his angent and ask about him?
Everyone assumes because it wasn't front page news that we did nothing.
It would not surprise me if we make calls and 50% of the time get a "No my client will not come to Cleveland for anything."
We aren't exactly that FA dream team, we are the AARP team for FAs getting ready to retire.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

If a guy is on the street in Week 5 he will go anywhere. Please don't blow this out of proportion.

and honestly, why would we?
we would have to cut Norwood who did look bad in his first game action vs. Baltimore, but he also knows the offense and looked better than that last season.
i don't see why people think we need a cruddy veteran WR. if it were a good one, then fine. but otherwise, let our young WRs prove they are part of our future here.

Because it gives us something we currently don't have- a DEPENDABLE receiver. What we don't have right now is someone who is an experienced pro who understands the game. I'd hardly call Gaffney a scrub- all the guy does is produce but seems to often be the odd man out on teams and thus let go.
Gaffney would give us a veteran presence who is less likely to make the rookie mistakes and becomes a great safety valve for Weeden. I'm not saying to make him a starter...but having him as a 3rd/4th receiver or a 3rd down guy would help this team a mile.
Absolutely the rooks are our future and we need to invest in them. BUT their growing pains can be minimized with a veteran presence to take some pressure off and to learn from.

J/C
Why would we want to pick up another aging receiver, who played in a different offense, and who was not that good to start with.
Just because he played for the Pats doesn't mean he's an upgrade.
IMO the only receiver worth picking up would be Burress. He can play and would help. His only problem is he is a "me" guy, who pouts when he doesn't become the focus of the offense.

Look at the Browns WR's.....which one has shown in the past he has played at high level. Not just another WR on the field. But a WR that can say "I've had a 1,000 YD season. no one. The Browns WR's resumes are so average, they don't even have one WR who had a 1,000 YD season in college...maybe Massaqiou. But he can't even break 900 YDs at the pro level. They have 2 WRs who didn't originally play WR in college..Cribbs and Little another who has issues..Gordon Benjamin and Norwood didn't exactly light up secondaries at Miami and PSU. passing on franchise type WRs under Heckert and failure to bring in a established WR via FA has really hurt this offense. I said the same thing before the 2011 started and that saying still is valid.

You should ask...why didn't ANYONE bring him in?
It's week 5 now...and Miami was happy with freaking Naanee over him until now.

i don't think Gaffney would give us anything more than what we have on our roster. and, he doesn't know the offense.
50rec for 800yds. we have alot of guys on this roster that can do that just fine.

Why you pre`ching to me? I never said our group was good. Actually I am starting to think they are worse than I thought at first.
If they signed Burress I would not complain one bit.

I'd be curious myself. He's not completely over the hill and he's got a great track record. Why no one has grabbed him before now I don;t know.
I'm not touting him as a #1 or #2...but as a veteran that gives our WR core some leadership and a dependable receiver. I think of him sort of like a Jurevicious type influence on the team. Did Joe ever light it up for the Browns? No....but he was a reliable target with good hands. Tell me who fills that role here.

A reliable target with good hands? ( let me look over my Browns, reliable player list from 2011, ... McCoy, Hillis, Watson, MoMass, Cribbs, ) Not a big list.
A reliable target with good hands? Watson, 1 Cribbs, 2 MoMass, tied for 2. ( Why has Watson fallen off? Well the Qb has to find him.)
What about Little? Is good Little going to show up today? Well the QB has to find him.
What about Richardson?
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Peyton Hillis and reliable should never be in the same sentence when talking about 2011.

or 2012, 2009, etc.
we really did catch lightning in a bottle with him in 2010. i am glad that the FO was smart enough to recognize that and not give him a big contract based on that one season (in which he played the last few games hurt as well)
