Kellen Winslow, New England Patriots to meet Tuesday

By Gregg Rosenthal

It took an injury, but tight end Kellen Winslow might be back in the NFL.

A source told NFL Network and NFL.com on Tuesday morning that Winslow is scheduled to meet with the New England Patriots later today. Winslow previously worked out for the Patriots after the Seattle Seahawks released him, but the team chose to sign Michael Hoomanawanui at the time.
Instant Debate: More troubling loss?
The Pats and Tony Romo's Cowboys were riding high after Week 1, but both teams stumbled Sunday. Which loss was worse? More ...

Things changed Tuesday when Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez suffered an ankle injury during Sunday's 20-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. A source told NFL Network and NFL.com that Hernandez is expected to miss four to six weeks with an ankle sprain.

There were reports that Winslow failed his physical the last time he tried out for the Patriots, so we wouldn't assume he'll be signed just yet. Still, this is his best, last chance for NFL relevancy. It's not like he wasn't productive last year.

Winslow had 75 catches for 763 yards and two touchdowns last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but Greg Schiano didn't seem to like Winslow's attitude so he dealt him to the Seahawks. Seattle dropped Winslow, reportedly after asking him to take a paycut. It was a curious move because reports indicated Winslow was a big part of the offense there.

Winslow is unlikely to be a big part of the offense if he signs in New England, but there should be an opportunity for snaps. The Patriots prefer two tight end sets, and Visanthe Shiancoe was placed on injured reserve and "designated to return." Winslow has gained over 700 yards in each of the last three years, but he must be humbled by his experience this offseason. Now he's just fighting to keep his career alive.

He could be a decent option for them since Hernandez is out with an ankle injury. Their TEs are almost pseudo WRs, so Winslow should fit nicely into a role for them.

I see the Winslow signing for the Pats going the way of Haynesworth and Chad Johnson. The headline itself makes a bigger impact than their actual contribution on the field. Worth a flier for the Pats I suppose.

They need someone to fill Aaron Hernandez's spot. He won't be able to fill it, but he will be able to do some of things they need.

What Rosenthal forgets to add is that the Seahawks picked up Evan Moore when they dropped Winslow - both at their peak might have a big difference, but not as much in 2012 and Evan likely was much cheaper.

Kellen Winslow played four snaps in his first game with the New England Patriots last week. He won't play any this week.

The Patriots released Winslow on Thursday, a source who had spoken with the tight end told NFL.com and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Winslow wasn't listed on the team's injury report Wednesday.

Winslow actually asked for his release, according to Rapoport. He has undergone a lot of knee surgeries over the years, and the strong guess is that he was dealing with too much pain to continue.

Winslow's contract wasn't guaranteed, so the Patriots only paid him a low rate for one week of work.

Winslow has enjoyed a productive if tumultuous career, averaging nearly 700 receiving yards for seven seasons. His knee problems always made him appear older than he really was, so it wouldn't be a shock if Winslow's career ended here at age 29.

Winslow was one of my favorite Browns upon us drafting him. I thought he had the kind of feistiness you want out of a football player and he was, in his prime, a dynamic TE who could change a game. Unfortunately the motorcycle accident, and subsequent staph infection, ruined his relationship with the Browns and catalyzed the decline of his career... Happens all the time, players end their careers 'young' but Winslow had a good career. Bouncing between Seattle and NE... I would bet he's probably done.
