Where’s Wally?
The costume of the Red Sox mascot, Wally the Green Monster, has been stolen from Fenway, Boston police said this afternoon.
Police said they believe the thief was wearing the costume. At about 2:22 p.m., a security officer at Fenway reported the theft. The thief was last seen at Boylston and Dartmouth streets.
Wally was seen around 1:30 p.m. walking in Copley Square during the summer arts festival. It’s unclear how many Wally costumes there are.
The mascot, who debuted in 1997, is a familiar figure around the ballpark and is popular with chidren. He also makes appearances at school functions, parades, holiday parties, and corporate and charity functions.
His official Red Sox website lists his height as “pretty big” and his weight as “doesn’t like to say.”
“Missing: Wally the Green Monster. If seen please call Boston Police,” police said in a tweet.
Police spokeswoman Cheryl Fiandaca said a “couple of units” have responded to the theft. “We are hopeful someone will see Wally and give us a call,” she said.
The MBTA suggested that people who see the monster use their See/Say smartphone app to report it.
