Full statement from Randy Lerner: “In connection with current rumors and press inquiries, I can report that I’ve been approached by Mr. Jimmy Haslam, who is interested in making an investment in the Cleveland Browns. We are currently in negotiations and both sides have agreed to keep that dialogue and its details private. Given that any transaction would require League approval, care has been taken so that this process will not be disruptive to the organization, in particular the football team, as it prepares for the upcoming season. We will share further details or make an announcement if it becomes necessary.” http://www.whosay.com/AdamSchefter/content/357631?wsref=tw&code=KsF3QH1

This guys owns a minority stake in the Steelers, and is an admitted Steelers fan, and is 81 Years old. WTH. And for the record, it was initially stated the this guys wanted to invest in the Browns, Shefter and Rizzo took that to mean buy. Haslam Bio

It's his son, who is 55, and a CEO of Pilot. Not Jimmy Haslam Sr.

Ahh, that makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.
Interesting that Shefter linked to Sr's bio page then.

Who knows? It might be a good thing. Sounds like he has some football knowledge and has a stake in a team that is known for consistency. Could be lots worse. It could be the long-lost son of Al Davis who just got a huge inheritance check after getting out of the penitentiary.

Unless he has to sell his stake in the Steelers, I'd be surprised if this is allowed by the league. I mean, seriously, talk about a complete conflict of interest.... not to mention, has ANYONE, EVER, been allowed to own even a minority part of more than one franchise -- and aren't there actually rules against that??

I am shocked. I thought Randy was the biggest fan. He has been a great owner. He put people in place he thought were the best and stayed out of the way. I wonder what Big Mike thinks about this. I hope any new owner stays out of football decisions. This sucks

And, the thread title is misleading -- by all accounts, the team is not being sold outright, this guy is just looking to invest.

I guess I have two thoughts on this:
1) If you're going to drop $900 Million on a football team, you're going to be 900 Million % a Browns fan. 2) How many other teams, hate them as we do, understand what the Browns and fans really are as much as the Steelers? I mean, they voted against the move to Baltimore.

1. It says he LOVES the steelers 1000% already...that doesnt leave meny %'s for us 2. I read what you typed 3 times and am unsure what you are trying to say.

Q. Before you became an investor, were you a Steelers fan?
A. No. I was actually originally a Dallas Cowboys fan and then an Indianapolis Colts fan.
Q. Are you a Steelers fan now, or is your relationship with the team more about business?
A. I am 1,000 percent a Steelers fan!
Sounds like a scumbag bandwagon POS to me.

Exactly what I thought. How can he own a stake (whatever size) in two NFL Teams. I can't see the owners approving that? or am I just reading this all wrong

Probably the same way he loves the Steelers, Colts, and Cowboys.
My guess is if he is willing to spend the near billion dollars it would take to buy the team, he's going to be a Browns fan.

Interesting. While I dont have time to research the family tree here at the office... Bill Haslam is the Governor of Tennessee ... and is a likeable enough Governor, I run into him on occassion and fundraisers. He has no idea who I am of course, but if I can talk Browns with my Governor ... well then he just might have a voter for life.

1. He "1000% loves the Steelers" because he's a minority owner. He was a Boy's fans and a Colts fan previously.
2. We don't like the Steelers. However, the two franchises obviously have a good deal of respect for each other and understand the historical connection, hence the Steelers voting against the move to Baltimore. They understood that the Browns needed to be in Cleveland. Maybe it's better that a potential owner is coming from somewhere that has that connection established. Maybe not. It have no idea. I made perfect sense in my head before. lol.

I remember right after the Browns moved, ESPN Radio did a poll, state by state ... 'Most hated sports figure'
First two states ...
Ohio and Pennsylvania....
Art Modell won both states.

Considering how things get blown way out of proportion a lot of times, I'll wait until the whole story comes out.
I will say I think it's curious that the story is coming out now. Are they close to a deal? Was someone going to leak it? DID someone leak it (other than the reports from a few months ago)?
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

"Invest" can mean a lot of different things, for sure. I think it would be best to wait and see what actually happens before planning that jump from the Terminal Tower.

We'll see.
It seems like most people are getting the feeling that Lerner is selling the entire team. Not just a little bit of it.
