OK, while we are on the subject of top 5 (fill in the blank), I decided to go with Top Five Best Live CD's. Here we go:
1. The Guess Who - Runnin' Back Thru Canada (Reunion tour of Canada's finest rock and roll band ever.) 2. Sonny Landreth - Grant Street (Great blues guitarist from Louisiana. Just an amazing compilation.) 3. Lou Reed - Rock and Roll Animal and Lou Reed Live. (Same concert but released a year apart. Should have been released as a double set.) 4. Bob Seger - Live Bullet and Nine Tonight. (Both are great live releases so I combined the two.) 5. Led Zeppelin - How the West Was Won.( I was told this was better than the Song Remains the Same...that is correct.)
OK, that's my take on this subject. What say you?

1. Grateful Dead: Europe '72,
IMO, this is the best GD album that you can get. A double cd set and it is spectacular all the way through. Doesn't matter if you like the dead or have never heard anything by them---either way; this is the album you need to hear. This was the first Grateful Dead album I ever bought, and I immediately developed an appreciation for their music.
After this album, my music tastes are partial toward the music I listened to growing up so bear with me...it all 90's stuff....
2. Nirvana MTV Unplugged,
This is my favorite Nirvana album. It is acoustic and so its not overwhelmingly loud and Kurt's angst-filled voice isn't all warbled with screams and mumbling......The songs are all presented raw and undistorted. A great record with a few great covers as well....
3. Alice in Chains MTV Unplugged,
Another MTV Unplugged album from the 90's. And this band had so many hits to throw together on an Unplugged record that this is solid all the way through. Its almost like a greatest hits album done unplugged. Great listening. Layne Staley's vocals are so unique and the band itself has a very distinct sound. I wasn't a really big Alice in Chains fan until years and years after having bought this album. Once I really listened to it, I grew to appreciate this band a whole lot more....
4. Sublime Stand by Your Van,
When people mention Sublime, a lot of folks probably think about Sublime's last album, which was self-titled, and featured hit songs like "What I Got," "Santeria," or "Doin' Time." But IMO, Sublime's earlier two albums; "40oz. to Freedom," and "Robbin' the Hood," were actually much better albums. Especially 40oz. to Freedom--that is one of my favorite albums ever....But with Stand by your Van, they put together a live album that features all that great material from earlier albums with all the energy of Sublime's live performances. Its a really great album and a must-listen for any real Sublime fan. Start to finish, this one is one of my favorites.
5. Phish 11-13-1998,
I was at this show, on the floor of the Convo, and it was the best concert I have ever been too. I still have the bootleg that I got from a taper there and it is awesome. The version of "Farmhouse" from the first set lasts like 8 minutes with a really intense jam session incorporated into it. That song, particularly from that tape, brings back a lot of really sweet memories from one of my first real girlfriends...so I guess it is kind of sentimental. Plus, the whole rest of the two tapes are str8 awesome. I am glad I got to see Phish back in their heyday, and I still have the music connecting me with such a great time.
Honorable mentions:
Jane's Addiction: Live and Rare or self-titled
My Morning Jacket: Okonokos
Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Animal
Frampton Comes Alive
The Doors: Live at teh Hollywood Bowl
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Never cared for live music. But over the yrs. I have found a few that I thought were worth the crowd noise.
Frampton comes alive - just because we drove the backroads and wined & dined to this.
T. Nugent - double live gonzo, same as above
Kenny wayne Sheppard - Live at Chicago - Some really smoking blues.
Black country Comm. - This is their 3rd cd and it's made loud, the crowd does not affect the music.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - One more from the road - Same as #1 and #2.
I really like Led Z so I might try "how the West was won."
I also remember some of Made in Japan, I might try that old one again.

I love Black Country Communion. I just ordered their live CD. Hope it's just as good as their studio sets.

I know when a friend of mine & I were listening to it on the internet we liked some of the songs on the Live cd better, which is saying something, with me anyway.

Sometimes live music sounds better than studio. Case in point for me...Bob Seger's Old Time Rock and Roll sounds better live than the overplayed studio version we keep hearing on corporate radio.
Black Country Communion is a supergroup type of band and I hope they continue to make good music. I suspect they will.
Bleednbrown, you will like How the West Was Won. Compare it to the Song Remains the Same and you'll notice a huge difference between the two, not just amount of songs but better production overall.

I'm totally the opposite. Most of what I listen to from my favorite bands is their live stuff. Most of the bands a I'm biggest fan of allow recording and trading of their live shows. To me what a band can do in a studio can easily hide a lack of overall talent. From voice modulators to heavy studio effects. Too often I've seen bands live that just can't replicate what they supposedly sound like according to their studio stuff. Where as if a band can bring the heat live... without the studio tricks... that's a band I can get behind. There is a purity that live music brings. The feedback between artist and crowd can propel a band to amazing things that no sterile studio could ever hope to capture.

That's true, listen to Blue Oyster Cult's "Astronomy" from their live album "Some Enchanted Evening" as opposed to the album cut ("Secret Treaties") - its way better, imo. (If you like BOC, that is.)
Then there are some bands I like, but I think blow "Live", like the Stones or Aerosmith.

Yeah, the Stones and Aerosmith are horrible live. Wouldn't take anything free from them.
I looked for BOC's Some Enchanted Evening on amazon and it ranged from $1.28 acceptable to $85.00 "NEW" Lot of money for a CD that doesn't have a lot of material. I probably would have gotten it if "I Love the Night" was part of the package. My absolute favorite song of BOC's.

lots of great ones already listed. nirvana, hendrix, frampton, led zeppelin especially sound 100x better on their live albums.
3 completely random 90s bands that sounded fantastic live, but lost a ton of that appeal on their 'studio albums' (and I don't know of a good live album for any of them though they may be out there):
Silverchair - studio mellowed out their low/thumping sound. after one of their concerts your heart would be skipping beats to their thumps for weeks.
Everclear - love the story-telling in their songs, but the studio really made them 'Pop' sounding. Live they kept a much grittier edge for most of their songs (early they even did for their 'big' hits but eventually relented and played the poppy versions live for those and kept the rest gritty)
Marcy Playground - most people are probably either going "who?" or "that sex&candy band?" their studio stuff sounds like a Blink-182 ripoff band (probably the point since they were huge then), but their live stuff was all played 3X faster (which absolutely made the songs).

seconding AC/DC live!
+1. Favorite live album by far. Nirvana Unplugged is also solid. Outside of that, only old OAR live stuff for me. Never been huge into live albums.

1. Framptom Comes Alive - We all know it, it was the coolest thing you'd ever heard in the 70s. This defined what a live album should be. 2. Cheap Trick, Live at Budakhan - Rent a 5000 person hall. Give away tickets through a radio promotion to 13 - 18 year old girls. Bring in about 50 of them before the show to show them how to cheerlead duing the concert. You've made yourself a hugh success. 3. Rush, Exit Stage Left - Motion Pictures gave them a new worldwide audience. The live concerts solidified those fans. 4. Frank Zappa, You Can't do That on Stage Anymore - There are several volumes. If you love music with fusion, jazz, rock, and lots of guitar, this is for you. 5. Kansas, Two for the Show - These guys were very tight musically. I found this a very enjoyable listening. It's just one of my favorites.

Jimi Hendrix - 'Band of Gypsies.' My favorite album PERIOD. New Years Eve 69 into 70, I believe. Fillmore - San Fran. It was his band w/ Buddy Miles & Billy Cox, not the original "Experience" lineup. There aren't that many songs on it, but MAN is it awesome. They just JAM . . .
Led Zeppelin - 'How the West was Won.' EPIC. My jaw just about dropped when I finally heard this. Only thing better is to watch the DVD version and crank it . . .
Nirvana - 'From the Muddy Banks of the Wishka.' Sure the Unplugged album is a modern classic, but if you want to hear what you'd get at a real Nirvana show, here you go. I guess at one point this AND Unplugged toghether were going to be a double disc release. Wow . . .
Guns N Roses - 'Live Era: '87 - '93. 2 discs. Very good compilation of songs old and new. You get just about every song off of 'Appetite...' This album really ROCKS!!!
TIE!!!
The Allman Bros. Band - 'Live at the Fillmore East.' Just classic. This is the band I've seen more live than any other and they were and still are just special . . .
Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young - 'Four Way Street.' Carry On. Just listen to it . . .
