BEREA – The optimism surrounding the start of Browns rookie minicamp was dulled tremendously by coach Phil Shurmur’s announcement this morning that defensive tackle Phil Taylor will have surgery next week to repair a torn left pectoral muscle. Shurmur said Taylor will be out for months but said it was premature to rule him out for the season. Taylor was the No. 21 pick in the draft last year and started 16 games with 59 tackles and four sacks. Taylor was injured Thursday lifting weights at the team facility during the offseason workout program. “Thanks for all the support,” he tweeted today. “Just a bump in the road. Got work hard and come back #Strong.” Taylor will likely miss the entire 2012 season, but there’s an outside chance he could return after the midpoint of the season. Shurmur said a decision on his roster status won’t be made until training camp in July and August. The Browns have a recent history with pectoral injuries. Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson missed most of 2009 and all of 2010 with a pair of torn pecs. He returned in 2011, started every game and was second in the NFL with 158 tackles. Defensive end Emmanuel Stephens, who had just cracked the starting lineup, tore a pectoral last season and missed the final five games. He’s expected to be back this season. The early candidates to replace Taylor in the starting lineup – next to underrated tackle Ahtyba Rubin – are rookies John Hughes (6-foot-5, 320 pounds) and Billy Winn (6-4, 295). Hughes was a third-round pick out of Cincinnati, and Winn a sixth-rounder out of Boise State. The Browns held their first minicamp practice in the morning and are scheduled for another this afternoon. Here are some observations: ** Quarterback Brandon Weeden, the No. 22 pick, looks good throwing the ball. He has a classic delivery that looks effortless, but the ball whistles out of his hand. He also showed good touch on a number of short passes. His best throw was a 20-yard out to undrafted receiver Jermaine Saffold. Weeden’s spiral on another throw was so tight, the spin on the ball was undetectable – like a fastball. “I’ve always been kind of a natural thrower,” the former minor league pitcher said. “It’s in my blood.” ** The players were in shorts and helmets, which doesn’t allow a running back to show his entire skill set, but Trent Richardson, the No. 3 pick, looked quick and powerful in drills. He also caught several balls out of the backfield. ** Fourth-round receiver Travis Benjamin dropped two passes, but Shurmur stopped the questioner. “Let’s not go there yet,” he said. “He has good hands and will show up.” Benjamin is listed at 5-10 and 175 pounds and has elite speed. His lower legs aren’t much thicker than a baseball bat. ** Seventh-round fullback Brad Smelley caught several passes. He lined up mostly at fullback, but took some repetitions at tight end. link

Cleveland Browns first-round picks Brandon Weeden and Trent Richardson impressive in first rookie camp practice | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/05/cleveland_browns_first-round_p.htmlBEREA, Oh -- Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden and running back Trent Richardson were impressive in their first rookie minicamp camp practice today. Weeden showed off his incredibly strong arm, throwing nice, tight spirals with good velocity and zip. He completed plenty of out routes and several deep balls. He also look fluid operating under center and dropping back. His footwork looked completely natural despite the fact he threw primarily out of the shotgun in college his last two seasons. "I feel really comfortable under center,'' he said. "I'll be honest, I like being under center more because I can see more of what's going on, and you get the ball immediately. If I had to pick one of the two -- not that I don't like being in the shotgun -- but I like being under center.'' Weeden is determined to beat out Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace for the starting job. "That's the approach that we're all going to take,'' said Weeden. "It's going to be fun. Colt's been in this system for two years, so he undestands the offense. I'm going to ask him questions and we're going to learn together and compete. that's what it's all about. I think he would answer the same way: we're going to do whatever we can to help this team win games, plain and simple. Whether it's me, him, obviously I hope I'm the guy. I'm going to do everything in my power to be the guy but you've got to take it one step at a time.'' Weeden showed off his natural chemistry with former Oklahoma State receiver Josh Cooper, his second-leading receiver there, and also completed some balls to fourth-round pick Travis Benjamin. His quick release and accuracy -- although under no pressure yet -- were evident. "Even when I first picked up the football, I've always been a natural thrower,'' he said. "Obviously if we get our feet set it's really easy. I was fortunate. When I got to the college level, I took a lot of pride in it. Today I threw the ball fairly accurately, not as good as I can. I've been blessed to be able to throw the football.'' Weeden hopes to bring a championship to the win-starved Browns fans. "Before I'm done playing I want to win a Super Bowl,'' he said. "That's my goal as a player.'' Richardson showed good burst and speed, and also caught the ball well out of the backfield. He bobbled the first few exchanges, but settled into his game after that. "You've got to get used to the double numbers on the jerseys,'' he said. "They're kind of slick. I didn't have double numbers or a slick jersey (at Alabama). When I got used to the handoffs with Brandon, another quarterback and stuff, I went with the flow. I know it was a rough start but as it went on, everything smoothed on out.'' He also learned quickly why Weeden was able to throw 90-plus miles per hour fastballs in the minor leagues. "He's got a strong arm,'' said Richardson. "I was three yards away from him, he threw it real hard and I had to put my hands up real fast. I can see why he played baseball.'' The camp runs through Sunday. * The Browns also signed sixth-round defensive tackle Billy Winn of Boise State. He becomes more important now that Phil Taylor is out for months with a torn pectoral muscle. * Browns coach Pat Shurmur said the team has not discussed acquiring receiver Plaxico Burress, who told Sirius XM Radio that the Browns are one of about four teams he's like to play for.

In all fairness, a three yard pass from DA would be in the dirt or over his head.

Speaking of doomed, I'm surprised nobody picked up on this little nugget.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

yea.. I picked up on it.. lol.
Just say no. Although he would be nice to have in the red zone. Weeden has excellent touch on those deep corner throws in the endzone.

Would take a DA with solid decision-making and accuracy on the short passes any day of the week.

i am not excited about this upcoming season at all....the only thing im excited for is we got Richardson (The only pick Heckert couldn't screw up)..the rest of our draft was pretty much trash...Weeden, while an avg QB will suck next year because the right side of our OL is trash, and we have no WR.....
Schwartz was a huge reach at 37...he is the Montario Hardesty of this draft....
The fact that Fa like Manningham were laughing at making fun of the idea to come to Cleveland on Twitter speaks volumes to what this franchise has sunk too...we have sunk to lower depths then the Bengals of the late 90's....is pathetic...
I fully expect this coming season to be an abortion....like 3-13....4-12 somewhere around there...and by then i seriously hope our owner has woken up from his drunken stupor and cans these morons and actually tries to find a FO that you know...actually wants to win..
Atleast Phil Savage ACTUALLY TRIED TO FREAKIN WIN!!!!! atleast the man tried...at least Phil Savage was able to sign some FA atleast the guy actually tried...
FA look at Holmgren and Heckert and laugh...the guys are a joke....and the joke is on us......I have never been so downright ticked off at the Browns in my life...this is the 1st season i can remember where I know we pretty much have no chance at all at winning anything, competing for anything, let alone making the playoffs or anything like that.
Carmen Policy and Butch Davis got us into the playoffs with a roaster worse then this one....and also had us a Dennis northcutt drop way from winning a playoff game...WITH A WORSE FREAKING ROSTER!!!!!!
H&H have no excuses this year...eithe rmake the playoffs or get your carcasses out of town...im tired of this...embarassment these clowns clal football.....

Well, the way they described it, more that he looks perfect throwing the ball. A lot of people talk about how he'll dazzle in practice with his great throwing motion.

Loved the Swartz pick and I don't consider it a reach at all. Guy will probably be our starting RT for the next dozen years and I could see several probowls in his future. We will have a top 5 OL this year, if everyone can stay healthy.

NFL Network's total access and NFL Live on espn showed some of our mini camp highlights well mostly concentrating on hand offs from Weeden to Richardson. I have to say, I saw like 1 clean handoff from Weeden out of maybe 15 or more they showed. Some handoffs he was picking off his legs, others were on his chest pads.
I saw Miller at LT and Swartz at RT. even in rookie minicamp we have a big line. The kid they had working at center had a wide body as well.
Anyway handoffs and playaction fakes need a ton of work.

That'll get straightened out. It's day 1. I love this quote from Richardson! http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/arti...a3-eba6d97dd6a7However, the new Cleveland Browns running back -- whom the team took with the No. 3 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft -- made one thing clear during his press conference at the team’s first day of rookie minicamp. The past is behind him and he is focused on the future. “From this point on, I’m not going to speak much about what I did at Alabama because that’s old,” Richardson said. “I did that at Alabama and that’s the college career and I’m trying to make a name for myself in the NFL now.”
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

One thing I did like from Weeden was improvement in dropping back. He was up on his toes and shows vastly improved balance when compared to the senior bowl. It looked natural.

I wouldn't mind the guy. He's really not a DIVA in the vein of TO or Ocho, is a great Redzone threat, and is a veteran WR who has superbowl ring.
Seems like he wouldn't be too bad of a pickup.
Go Browns!!

Wide receiver Travis Benjamin dropped a couple of passes from Weeden. Benjamin, a fourth-round pick from Miami, said he needs to get used to the velocity of Weeden’s passes.
“Working with a new quarterback, that was an adjustment, catching balls from Brandon Weeden,” Benjamin said. “Every quarterback’s got a different style of throwing. He’s got a touch on it and a zip that you’ve gotta brace yourself and get ready for the ball"
I love this.. Shorts or not.. at least the dude has the NATURAL talent to zip the darn thing. The rest is upstairs.. You can't "teach" someone how to throw hard and accurate. Colt or Senace could practice for 50 years and STILL not have this.

Browns rookie minicamp: news, notes and observations from morning practiceBy Nate UlrichPublished: May 11, 2012 Impressive debut Quarterback Brandon Weeden had zip on his throws and made it look effortless. He threw only a couple of poor passes by my count. After practice, Weeden said he met Seneca Wallace today, but he hasn’t talked to Colt McCoy. He also made it clear he’s on a mission to win the starting quarterback job. “Obviously I hope I’m the guy,” said Weeden, a first-round pick from Oklahoma State. “I’m gonna do everything in my power to be that guy.” Weeden was asked to deliver a message to Browns fans as he starts his tenure with running back Trent Richardson. “We’re coming [here] with a goal to win games,” Weeden said. “Obviously our first goal is to get to the playoffs and go as far as we can and ultimately before it’s all said and done, win a Super Bowl. That’s my goal as a player. Before I’m done playing, I want to win a Super Bowl.” Working out kinks Richardson fumbled a couple of handoffs from Weeden early in the practice. He said he had to adjust to wearing a jersey with two numbers on it because the numbers create a slippery surface. He wore No. 3 in college. Now he’s wearing No. 33. “It know it was a rough start,” said Richardson, the third overall pick from Alabama. “But as it went on, everything smoothed on out.” Richardson had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee for a meniscus tear Feb. 3, but he said he felt fine in the first practice. “I haven’t slowed down yet," he said. "People talk about that minor scope that I had on my knee, and I’ll be like, ‘What knee? What ya’ll talking about? I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ When it comes down to it, I’m ready to go.” Richardson said he has mentally prepared himself for the expectations being placed upon him as the No. 3 pick. “These expectations they’ve got for me now, I don’t think it’s high enough for me," he said. "I’m gonna go to the extreme because you never set your expectations at a limit. That’s just me being a man and me just being a competitor and an athlete. I think you should always have your expectations higher. Being the third pick in the first round, having all the success in Alabama, from this point on I’m not gonna speak much about what I did at Alabama ‘cause that’s over. I did that at Alabama, and that’s [my] college career. I’m trying to make a name for myself in the NFL now.” Challenging adjustment Wide receiver Travis Benjamin dropped a couple of passes from Weeden. He’s got a touch on it and a zip that you’ve gotta brace yourself and get ready for the ball.” Taking attendance Thirty-six players participated in the minicamp, including all 11 members of this year’s draft class. Ohio State linebacker Andrew Sweat, who signed with the Browns as an undrafted rookie free agent, was the only player missing. Four players are at minicamp on a tryout basis: Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas, Toledo running back Adonis Thomas, Temple defensive lineman Morkeith Brown and Oregon State tight end Joseph Halahuni. Fitting in Fourth-round pick James-Michael Johnson played weakside linebacker, though he said he’s been told that he’ll line up in the middle during the afternoon practice. … Sixth-round pick Emmanuel Acho played middle linebacker. … Seventh-round pick Brad Smelley lined up at fullback the majority of the time, but he also was used at tight end.

the one interesting tidbit. JMJ already getting reps at WOLB. I assume Acho got the afternoon reps there?

After watching JMJ's presser, dude reminds me of Suggs.. his look and his nonchalant demeanor.. He has this confidence about himself. I likes. Hopefully he becomes a huge part of this defense at the LB spot.

He left a similar impression with me too. In fact I got a good impression from all of our rookies interviewed.

I know that I'll hear about posting a QB article .... but oh well. http://blogs.clevelandbrowns.com/2012/05/12/weedens-impressive-passing-looks-like-real-deal/Weeden’s impressive passing looks like real deal Posted by Vic Carucci on May 12, 2012 – 2:23 am By Vic Carucci, Senior Editor You can’t conclude a whole lot from a minicamp practice. A rookie minicamp offers even less fodder for conclusions. Helmets, yes. Pads, no. Contact, accidental at the most. The pace and tempo are nothing remotely close to what is found in an NFL game. But it’s something. It’s a starting point. It’s football’s version of sort of stretching before the workout (even though there is actually stretching before these minicamp practices). And most of what it comes down to is an elongated passing drill. Sure, there are some running plays sprinkled into the mix. Sure, the players at other positions do what they and their coaches deem significant work on the field. However, the practices only offer us a chance to make what we think is a substantive judgment in one area: How the quarterback throws the ball. Because regardless of the circumstances and no matter who is on the field and the manner in which they perform, a throw is a throw. You can determine its quality or lack thereof. So I feel fairly comfortable in saying this about Browns first-round draft pick Brandon Weeden: He can throw a football extremely well. He can throw it hard or soft, fast or slow, and usually with considerable accuracy. He delivers an ultra-tight spiral that cuts through the air like a laser. At one point during the morning practice, one of those spirals was traveling straight to where three of us were standing together on the sidelines. Truth was, one of us (probably me) would have likely have been struck by the ball before being able to step out of the way. Fortunately, Josh Cooper, an undrafted free agent who caught passes from Weeden at Oklahoma State, stepped in front of us at the last moment to make the grab. I was mesmerized in the same way I was when Weeden fired passes through defensive traffic, when he connected on several nice deep outs, when he hooked up with his tight end in the seam. I reminded myself that it was May, not September. I reminded myself that he was surrounded by other rookies, many of whom won’t make it to the final roster of the Browns or any NFL team for that matter. I reminded myself the weather was perfect, a sun-splashed day without a hint of wind. I reminded myself of everything that would force me to keep my enthusiasm about Weeden’s talent in check. Still, your eyes know what they’ve seen, and what I saw was the big arm, the strong pocket presence, the quick decision-making. What I saw was what was advertised after the Browns made this 28-year-old rookie the 22nd overall pick of the draft last month. “He reminds me of Bernie Kosar in the huddle, and that’s saying a lot,” Hanford Dixon told me later when we gathered to discuss the first day of minicamp on “Cleveland Browns Daily, Driven by Liberty Ford.” Yes, that is saying a lot. But I have this feeling it just might not be saying too much.

Didn't know Adonis Thomas is in Camp too...like it....goes to show how deep RB depth charts around the league are when a player like him with his production the past 2 seasons can't even get an UDFA contract...pretty confident he will get one though and hopefully he makes th PS

** Seventh-round fullback Brad Smelley caught several passes. He lined up mostly at fullback,
Perhaps the FO has seen that Marecic was a bad pick?

... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

Or perhaps Smelley was the only FB in camp?

It is probably the concussions more than anything else. Fullback prone to concussions is certainly not goood. Marecic was starting to come into his own and then it was like back to back concussions.

Wait, is he in shorts, or the ball in shorts?
I hope he has balls in his shorts.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said the team has not discussed acquiring receiver Plaxico Burress, who told Sirius XM Radio that the Browns are one of about four teams he's like to play for.
Well "shoot" I hope we don't sign him.
I wouldn't mind the guy. He's really not a DIVA in the vein of TO or Ocho, is a great Redzone threat, and is a veteran WR who has superbowl ring.
Seems like he wouldn't be too bad of a pickup.
I say bring him, lets give him a "shot"

No, he's just a guy who was dumb enough to carry a loaded pistol in the pocket of his sweatpants and shoot himself in the leg. That's exactly the type of guy this team needs!

I don't recall Burress being known as a cancer to the teams he played for. I don't see the gun thing as that big of a deal. He served his time. If he would help the team I would say why not? The only thing that would really change my mind is if I am wrong on the team problem issue.

Agreed. While maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I do not recall ever hearing him as a problem in the locker room. Not saying it hasn't been said, just saying I don't remember hearing that.
He made a mistake and took a gun into a NYC night club. He got caught and did his time.

Most of us have made "mistakes" in night clubs.
But, I'd wager that very few (if any - much more likely none) have brought an unregistered loaded gun w/o the safety on in the waistband of our sweatpants to a night club in one of the most gun-controlled states in the country.
