Browns sign Smelley and Johnson.

The Browns have agreed to terms of a four-year deal with rookie linebacker James-Michael Johnson, his agent, Scott Smith, announced today via Twitter.

Scout.com reported the contract is worth $2.52 million.

The Browns drafted Johnson in the fourth round (No. 120 overall) out of Nevada. The 6-foot-1, 241-pound Johnson spent his first two collegiate seasons playing on the strong side and his final two playing in the middle.

“He’s one of those linebackers that has position flexibility,” coach Pat Shurmur said after the Browns picked Johnson. “He can play both outside spots, and he’s played some snaps in the middle, so we feel good about him joining that group.”

Johnson had 88 tackles as a junior and 100 as a senior. He could receive an opportunity to immediately crack the starting lineup if strongside linebacker Scott Fujita’s three-game suspension for his alleged role in the New Orleans Saints’ bounty scandal is upheld. Fujita has denied involvement and has reserved the right to appeal the suspension issued by the NFL.

CLEVELAND -- The Browns have agreed to terms on a four-year deal with fourth-round linebacker James-Michael Johnson, his agent Scott Smith announced on twitter.

The Browns have also signed Alabama fullback/tight end Brad Smelley, a league source confirmed.

First-round pick Trent Richardson also told 92.3 The Fan today that he's close to reaching agreement on his contract and hopes to have it done by Thursday.

Smelley's deal is worth $2.14 millions, including a signing bonus of $45,890, according to scout.com

Smelley, 6-2, 230, was selected in the seventh round (247 overall) after starting 10 games for the Crimson Tide last season. His most notable game was in the BCS Championship victory over LSU when he caught seven passes.

JMJ vs. Acho for the WOLB. May one of them grab that job and never look back.

I love the Smelley signing. I have a good feeling about Richardson being familar running behind him and he is good at catching out of the back field

I like it as well, though my reasons may be motivated differently.

I like the SEC and just think when in doubt, go with the SEC player. If he did it there, that is as close to the NFL as it gets in the minor leagues of college football.

That's not to say other teams and conferences aren't good, but this kid blocked against top competition pretty much every week of the conference schedule...even the weaklings are pretty darn good....it's just the deepest conference in the NCAA, thus, if you prove to be good there, you have a legit shot.

That aside, I like this new wage / slotting scale....fair terms and kids don't hold out. Now Richardson is talking about signing this week rather than signing a game or two in to the exhibition schedule.

I can't wait until they sit in the right order on the bench and we get the "Smelley Johnson Sweat" picture.

That's interesting given the players that have come out of the PAC-12 including the best player in the NFL.

Now I just wish Joe Looney and Nick Toon will someday be on the same team.

No doubt, but we are talking about a low round pick here, not a early pick.

Given that, I would eye the SEC player if I was in question.

I really didn't think I would need to explain that.

Wade

Quote:

The Browns have agreed to terms of a four-year contract with rookie cornerback Trevin Wade, a league source told the Beacon Journal this afternoon.

The Browns drafted Wade in the seventh round (No. 245 overall) out of Arizona. The 5-foot-10, 192-pound Wade compiled 182 tackles, 28 pass breakups and 12 interceptions in his four collegiate seasons. Last season as a senior, he had 52 tackles, 13 pass breakups and two interceptions.

“I'm smart, I have great ball skills and I can anticipate things that are coming, so I don't miss a lot of tackles,” Wade said after he was drafted. “I'm trying to bring a new, all-around cornerback to the Cleveland Browns.”

Cleveland Browns sign rookie DL John Hughes and CB Trevin Wade to four-year deals | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/05/cleveland_browns_sign_rookie_d.html

CLEVELAND -- The Browns today signed third-round pick John Hughes and seventh-round pick Trevin Wade to four-year deals.

Hughes is a defensive lineman from Cincinnati and Wade is a cornerback from Arizona.

The Browns had previously signed Alabama fullback/tight end Brad Smelley and linebacker James-Michael Johnson.

The Browns have taken a lot of heat for drafting Hughes so high, but they think he'll contribute right away to their tackle rotation. He was ranked the 40th best defensive tackle in this draft class, but the ninth one chosen.

The Browns hope to have most of their other draft picks signed by the start of minicamp on Frida

And another duo.

Browns agreed to terms with No. 160 overall pick OG Ryan Miller on a four-year contract.

Browns agreed to terms with No. 100 overall pick WR Travis Benjamin on a four-year contract.
Benjamin is on the small side at 5'10" and 175 pounds, but the Browns believe he can add a much-needed speed element to their wide receiver corps. Nicknamed the "Belle Glade Blur," Benjamin blazed a 4.36 forty at the Combine. His future is in the slot, but he'll have to hit the weight room before making a fantasy impact.

So we still have yet to sign Richardson, Weeden, Schwartz, Acho and Wynn, right?

6 down, 5 to go.

I didn't see it ...... but I would imagine that most of these guys want to get signed and into camp. There's not too much room for these guys to negotiate, so might as well get their deals done and get into camp.

Maybe that's what I saw. I see where some NFL teams have every draft pick signed already.. of course most of them are ones that drafted later in the first round...

Got Winn and now Schwartz under contract.

Leaving Richardson, Weeden, and Acho (unless I missed it).

Browns signed rookie RT Mitchell Schwartz, the No. 37 overall pick, to a four-year contract.
A scrappy, 6-foot-5, 317-pound mauler, Schwartz has long arms and a mentality necessary to emerge as a long-term answer at a long-term trouble spot in Cleveland. Schwartz is penciled into the Browns' starting lineup as a rookie.

Usually when you think of someone scrappy (at least when I do), I think of someone smaller (e.g. Scrappy-Doo).

Anyway ...... he's signed too, leaving just Richardson and Weeden as far as I can tell.

Browns reportedly sign sixth-round pick Emmanuel Acho to four-year, $2.178 million deal
By NATE ULRICH Published: May 11, 2012

The Browns have signed rookie linebacker Emmanuel Acho to a four-year contract worth $2.178 million, Scout.com reported tonight.

The deal includes a signing bonus of $78,680, according to the report.

The Browns drafted Acho in the sixth round (No. 204 overall). The 6-foot-2, 238-pound Acho had a team-high 131 tackles, including 19 for loss and three sacks, last season as a senior at Texas. He started all 13 games at weakside linebacker in 2011.

Acho practiced at middle linebacker Friday during rookie minicamp. The Browns will likely experiment with him at outside linebacker, too.

Makes sense that the last two to sign will be the two first rounders. with the new rookie scale in place, I can't see where it's going to take very long to get these two guys signed. I wonder what kinda things are left to negotiate?

Just making sure the slot numbers work. It's all happening as was hoped. Players are signing in May, not mid August.

I wonder if we will see Trent sign before Weeden. Early 20s picks are the first ones where there is a question on how much is guaranteed, I believe. I think that's what the holdup was with Taylor last year.

Not every first-round contract will be easy to negotiate

Posted by Mike Florio on May 11, 2012, 8:16 PM EDT

With an unprecedented number of draft picks signing contracts early, thanks to a CBA that makes it more formulaic than ever to work out the details of deals, it would be easy to assume that the momentum will continue until all of the deals are done, perhaps by Memorial Day.

It would be easy, but it very well could be wrong.

Though there’s not all that much to negotiate when it comes to first-round contracts, one potential sticking point comes from the extent to which the money is fully guaranteed for all four years. In 2011, the first 20 picks received four-year, fully-guaranteed contracts. Three-year guarantees applied as of the 22nd pick, Colts lineman Anthony Castonzo.

At pick 21, the Browns and defensive lineman Phil Taylor worked out a compromise that would make his fourth-year income guaranteed or put him on the open market early in the league year, giving him an extended opportunity to make the money with a new team.

In 2012, picks in the range of 21 to 25 could take some extra time, as agents try to pull the four-year guarantee deeper into the round — or, at a minimum, to slide the formula that the Browns used when negotiating Taylor’s deal to lower selections.

Making things even more interesting is the fact that the Patriots, who have been known to drive a hard bargain with first-round picks (just ask Ben Watson), hold spot No. 21, for which they traded up used to select defensive end Chandler Jones. Also, the Browns devoted pick No. 22 to a quarterback, Brandon Weeden, who may be able to get the same deal one spot lower that Taylor got last year with the 21st pick, especially by pointing to the loose notion that quarterbacks deserve a better deal that non-quarterbacks taken at the same spot.

Then the question becomes whether the players taken with picks 23 (Riley Reiff of the Lions), 24 (David DeCastro of the Steelers), and 25 (Dont’a Hightower of the Patriots) will be able to yank the Taylor/Weeden formula deeper into the round.

Chances are the Patriots won’t go for it at No. 25, which would set the floor on the three-year guarantee. That leaves Reiff and DeCastro to possibly wait it out. Possibly past the Fourth of July.

Possibly into training camp.
