Hey everyone, I am planning a getaway/spring break trip to Chicago and my first thought was where to park my car and how to get around the city. Is the main city like NY where it would not be a good idea to drive into the city? Also, I started looking for hotels and noticed this place called Hostel International offering rooms with free breakfast and more at a rate of 40 dollars or something. Which is an unbelievable deal for any hotel room in Chicago compared to something like >170 a night. It's also right by all the stuff that is convenient such as the sears tower, Navy pier, L line subway, museums, and more. The reviews and website of http://www.hichicago.org/index.shtml look great but has anyone ever been to one of these things? Is it just like a dorm in college or something?

Best post ever.

From what I've heard they're like college dorms.

Wow ..... $35 to park your car overnight ..... and that's the rate the negotiated? lol I wouldn't be into a hostel ..... I'd rather have privacy ...... but if you don't care about privacy, and you aren't planning on having any overnight guests of the opposite sex, then it might be OK. Their website does show private bedrooms with a shared bathroom for $79-$89. That might not be too bad if you don't want to do the dorm thing. Still cheaper than $170/night. Of course, if your driving, and you want a little privacy ..... and you go with the private room for $89, plus $35 for parking, plus the $3.50 fee ...... you might be better off going to hotels.com and seeing what you can find there. In fact, looking on hotels.com, there are rooms for 2 adults for $105 and up. on weekdays. I'd check that out as well, and compare everything. If you're driving, you want to make sure you have parking and such.

I thought this said, " has anyone ever starved" .
Thosse " free breakfasts" haven't impressed me. One was like a dirty hot dog condiment table, with breakfast items. pick whatever you like.

Yeah, the main thing I want to make sure about is that I have safe parking. Worst case scenario, I don't want my car to somehow get towed away and then I have to go through something to get my car back. Perhaps I would be better either looking at hotels.com or just going to the nearest Days Inn or Red Roof Inn that I see on the freeway signs when I get close to Chicago. This International Hostel was voted #1 hostel in the world in 06 or 09. Whatever that means I guess that's good. The thing that I would be afraid of is that it looks great in the ads and reviews but what happens if all the food and services they offer are really crap. Who knows......I'll make up my mind sooner or later. Oh yeah, Hostel 2 is on a whole different level of weirdness compared to the first one if anyone has seen it.

I think the new hostels are a bit different than the old ones.
Been there and done that at one time. But it cost $2-$3 a night, the showers where open, which sounds great if you like showering with mostly dudes and a few chunky or super skinny chicks. Sleeping quarters were first come and you always ended up above or below the guy who snored or blew farts all night long.
I prefer my Marriott or Hilton. I like sleeping in peace and showering in private.

Ive been to Chicago a few times. They have a very good inexpensive train system that goes pretty much anywhere you would want to go. Traffic didnt seem as bad as nyc, but Im assuming parking would be expensive if you wanted to drive around. I always flew in and took the train out of ohare.

I have never done a hostel in this country.
As for Chicago, I have been there maybe a dozen times or so, and have never driven there or driven around. Always take a cab from the airport, and once downtown, walk or jump a cab if I don't feel like walking or the weather is bad.
I did fly in to Midway once. That was weird. The airport is surrounded by a neighborhood. I mean it seemed like you were flying over homes until you were maybe 70 feet off the ground. It looked like you were clearing buildings by 20 feet. It gave me the feeling we were going down and about to crash.

Can't help on the hostel thing, but at $35 a night, wouldn't it be better to park at the airport and take the train from there to the city. Your car wouldn't get towed, is probably safer than a standard city lot, and it's probably 1/3 the price.

But having one of the same sex is better?
I would check with Jules for information though, she's usually hostile.

She will say to stay at a Manatee Express.
But if you stay at a Manatee Express, you will sleep with Sea Cows.... and when you sleep with Sea Cows, you start to realize they're aliens on recon missions.... and when you realize they're aliens on recon, you where a tin foil hat. Don't where a tin foil hat. Go to a Days Inn and take the Loop.

When we were out west, my wife and I used to go to KOAs quite a bit. Usually we got a cabin (always had our own sheets & pillows) which typically ran anywhere from $25-$40/night depending upon the location. They never were far from where we were going. Never did any of that east of the Mississippi (or even the Great Plains) but I can't imagine that they're all that bad, no matter where you'd stay. We have our plaque on this tree with several visits on it.
