If you think about it, the Browns find themselves in a very, very similar situation to where they were just five years ago. In fact, we can even rewind to six years ago and last year if you really want to line up the parallels.

2005: The Browns started the season with what was basically expansion team-level talent, with an aging vet well past his prime who even in his best years was not at elite status. The Browns had drafted a rookie QB in the third round who seemed to have been rated higher by many of the draft prognosticators, but had been given some demerits due to a lack of arm strength and a lack of pocket presence. The veteran QB was injured and the rookie showed some flashes of brilliance filling in for him. Enough potential to where the organization felt like going forward with him, despite looking like a deer in the headlights against the top ranked defense.

2006: The Browns decided to "Go down the path" with the rookie QB, now in his second year, and he promptly fell on his face. The team in many ways looks WORSE than the year before despite another year of collecting talent. The rumblings for the ousting of the head coach grew louder and louder. The coach was ultimately retained at the end of the season.

2007: The Browns had obtained two first round picks. A QB was one of those 1st round picks. The Browns ended up going 10-6 in what was known as the Season of Dreams.

Who else sees the parallels between 2005 and 2010, and 2006 and 2011?

I assume we'll retain Shurmur, despite many callings of his head (including my own). The Browns have two first round picks...except this time we didn't mortgage the farm for them (which IMO ultimately hurt us in 2008...I can't help but wonder if the outcome would have been different if we had an actual 2008 draft class).

This time does history repeat itself and we end up with a 1st round QB?

Makes me wonder. Just wanted to throw it out there.

So we're going to sign Tyrod Taylor and go 10-6 next season?

I see parallels with every regime we've had since our return. Even before that excluding Marty and Bill.

So long as we keep blowing up the roster with regime changes every few years we'll continue to have parallels from regime to regime. One barely gets started when it gets replaced and the same thing happens to the next regime.

Look through the Browns history of coaching regimes and you'll find that every time a coach is given his 5 years we get in the playoffs. Anyone short of 5 years does not which is every regime but 3 of them.

To break this chain we have to let a coaching staff go through the growing pains without getting impatient and changing everything wholesale.

Look at any of the consistently good teams and you find they have a lot of 5 and 6 year guys on the roster who've gained their experience with their current team. We have no one like that.

We always have our drafted players with older vets who gained their experience with other teams and most of them are at the end of their careers. Not a great mix for success.

By the time our drafted players get into their 3rd and 4th years the roster gets blown up. We keep a few and start over. Not a great plan for success.

Historically this team never has a chance.

I doubt very much Lerner will want to change this regime any time soon. I also doubt very much that Holmgren will want to change his GM or Head Coach any time soon.

I tire of having high hopes with each new regime only to see it discarded while it's still in the middle of it's growing pains.

I do believe that this regime will stay together, have the freedom to fail and eventually get on track with a roster built through the draft having a large portion of the players with 5-6-7 years playing together in the same schemes under the same coaching staff.

The parallels are not that surprising since we keep doing the same thing over and over and over again. We keep doing the same thing and we keep getting the same results and we marvel at the parallels.

Or perhaps we actually get the rookie QB right this time.

Maybe Matt Flynn or some kind of young west coast backup.

I was making a joke, in reference to us signing a Baltimore backup QB that lead us to our 10-6 season...

We just need to stay the course for more than a couple of years with a regime. This changing all the damn time is a worthless exercise in futility.

We have a Team President with a huge amount of experience in the league. We have a solid, up and coming GM. We have a very, very young head coach. Let this group grow together.

If we dump everyone 2 or 3 years from now, what will we accomplish? Another tear down and restart? Give these guys at least 5 more years and see what they can do. I am so damn tired of blowing things up all the time.

x2

My only slight tweak is I am open to hiring Andy Reid and Mike Sherman.... as that would be a very talented and experienced staff. The philosophy and roster could remain identical. Otherwise I say stick with Holmgren, Heckert, Shurmur, and Jauron for the rest of their careers.

I can see tweaking the assistants, but the top of each level really needs to remain the same so we can develop some long term consistency.

2 tweaks hopefully take place: a legit OC and a new special teams coach.

I like your thinking Ddub..

And Ytown,, I agree, changing regimes all the time is not going to result in a winning franchise. We have a good Pres and a young GM that's really doing a decent job so far and a HC that is young and working with less talent than some think

Give it time.

Just two minor things here....

in what was known as the Season of Dreams.

Where was it ever called this? You need to stop taking those on-line creative writing courses.

On the other hand I believe this is the first post you've made in 6 months that didn't reference Mangini like he was your close, personal friend. That's a definite improvement.....

"Season of Dreams" was dubbed by the Really Big Show back in 2007 before the season even started.

I see a trend, although you can probably see similiar trends in most of the NFL teams, we just dissect it more for obvious reasons.
