http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/arti...3e-9816fdbf68d6Jackson named AFC Player of the Month Linebacker D'Qwell Jackson was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month, the league announced Thursday morning. Cleveland Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced today. In his first three games back after missing the previous 26 contests due to injury, Jackson amassed 30 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery as the Browns posted a 2-1 record during the month. His 30 tackles are tied for fourth in the NFL, while his 2.5 sacks rank second among all AFC linebackers and is tied for fourth in the conference. The Browns defense has allowed just five touchdowns this season, which is tied for fourth in the league. This is the first AFC award of Jackson’s six-year career. He is the first Brown to be selected as either AFC Defensive or Offensive Player of the Month since the award was established in 1986. Congrats DQ, hopefully Rubin is next!

here come the DQ haters .... haha just kidding.
who would have thought one of our LBs would ever get player of the month award? the only other good LB we've had since we've been back in the league was Jamir Miller.

I don't know who votes on this award and there are probably more deserving players. But it is still very cool to have a Browns' player recognized.

Hmmm
Let's see here
Gocong gets a new 3 year deal
DQ is named AFC Defensive player of the month
Yet, according to some gurus on this board (who shall remain nameless) They both suck and we should have dumped them.
My question is, what is it that either the FO is seeing or whoever votes for DPOM. What are they seeing that some of the fans aren't?
I'll admit that I really thought the LB corps was going to be a weakness.. but I was thinking more from a depth standpoint. My opinion hasn't changed on that yet. I might feel better once Titus Brown is back full steam...

I think we're average with the LBers....but missing the 1-2 Pro Bowl studs everyone wants. So it creates the illusion that we are weak. When actually, we are decently solid, just not flashy and impactful.
Does that make sense or am I just crazy?

I don't think many people said DQ sucks and we should dump him. I think most people (myself included) thought he would improve in a 4-3. The biggest question many people (myself included) had about DQ was whether or not he could stay healthy. Through three games he has been terrific and I'm both very happy for him and happy for the positive impact he's had on the team.
Gocong played a nice game against the 'Phins, but I am still shocked at the contract. He was not a good 4-3 LB in PHI which is why we were able to get him for so cheap. I was happy with what he did from inside last year and if he can continue to play well on the strong side then he may be worth all that cash. Fujita is likely on his way out after this season I think based on his declined play this year and Gocong playing much better on the strong side than the weak side.

Not to diminish anything that DQ did this month, and I'm very happy he won the award ... but was the competition on Defense that weak this month? No doubt, he put up some very solid numbers and I'd love him to keep rolling, but at no point was anyone saying, "Wow! DQ was a total beast on D today". Was everyone else in the AFC just that average?

Congrats to DQ. He and the D will have a real test this weekend against the Titans. I expect him and the newly extended Chris Gocong to have great games.

I think that DQ played well ..... because he was largely untouched on every tackle he made. The DL did a great job of keeping damn near everyone off of DQ.
He took advantage of it, and had a solid 3 games.
I still don't think that he's a game changer. However, I am willing to give him the benefit of a doubt this year. I still worry about signing him to a huge extension.

when your DT's are eating up blocks, then you get that kind of stellar play from your LB. I think this is a 1st a Brown has been AFC Defensive player of the Month since the return. this is the best d-line since the return by far

I think it is only fitting that Rubin and Phil present him the award, since they gift wrapped the award already lol.

+1
How many times have we said the same thing about Ray Lewis and the DTs that help him so much. LBers and DBs owe thanks to the D-line and QBs, RBs, TEs & WRs owe thanks to the O-line. It all starts up front! Build your line and the rest is "easy".

Does that really matter? If you don't like who chooses, is DQ any less deserving?

the only other good lb we've had sine we've been back is Jamirr Miller. You said.
Well I know Kamerion Wimbley didn't play Lb but played De but they're often asked to do the same things, I always look at them as the same position.
Oppisite Miller, on one pre-season was going to be a really good lb from the steelers who was injured before we could see them together. I forget his name.
The last year and a half and ONLY, ONLY, ONLY, ! the last year and a half of Andra Davis' time with the Browns he was pretty good. D'wayne Rudd was pretty good, ( I know no one will remember anything other than that he threw his helmut) .
Yes it's obvious they've lacked some playmakers at Linebacker.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Wimbley was a 3-4 OLB here...
We traded him to Oakland because they ran a 4-3 and possibly he could play DE there...
He's still playing OLB I believe...

Yeah ... but nobody was saying, "Wow! DQ was a total beast on D today".
Most of the accolades were for Rubin.

Yes, I never said he was doing poor and I didn't mean to imply he was doing "average". He put up very good numbers across the board. But you don't see any "leads the leauge in ..." in any of those stats. Usually these awads are reserved for guys that are game changers, or guys who led the league in interceptions or sacks for the month. I remember seeing the Steelers/Colts game, and they kept talking about how Dwight Freeney was tearing through the Steelers line and wreaking havoc.
You don't really see that with DQ. He put up a solid month of stats, didn't really lead the league in anything, but was sort of a jack of all trades. Usually the guys like that don't get "Player of the Month" awards, unless all the game changers put up terrible stats, and all the league leaders haven't done much of anything else in the other stat departments.

*sigh* now were degrading the Defensive Player of the Month...we dont have a real QB, our MLB is not good enough to be, our LB getting an extension isnt worth it... were 2-1 for the first time since the last time we made the playoffs...can we just congratulate the guy? He deserves it, hes a good player...story over.

reference: " Battered Housewife Syndrome"
She doesn't look for a brighter future, because all optomism has bean beaten out of her. Her life sucks, and now she's convinced that it's because she deserves it.
Some fans can be that way with their teams.
I don't think that's always the case when a poster puts a "yeah- but-" post up about a player. In my job, it's important to keep a critical eye/ear open at all times, because it's in the critique that we find holes in our game. Finding those holes is the first step towards fixing them, and turning what was once a weakness into a strength. I believe some fans watch the games/players with that same critical eye/mindset... and post their observations as such.
Add those to the posts by the battered housewives of the board, and it can sometimes seem like Browns fans don't like nuttin'. If I read enough output from a poster, it usually doesn't take too long for me to figure out in which camp he pitches his tent.
For my own part, I'm ecstatic that DQ's efforts are being recognised by someone outside of the Cleveland base. Lord knows he's suffered enough for this team with injuries, bad team mates, lousy teams, etc. I'm willing to enjoy seeing a Browns player- ANY player get a little love. Who have we had before this? JT, Josh... uh- the list gets REALLY thin after that.
What would be really sweet is seeing this award passed from DQ to another Browns player (or two, or three...). THAT'S when we'll really know that Jauron is building something special here at 76 Groza. (Joe Hayden, anyone? *hint*)

Don't be silly with the psychologizing. DQ didn't lead the league in any statistic. So it is normal to be surprised he is an MVP. I would have expected sack, int, or tackle leader to be MVP. Common sense != battered wife syndrome

Clem another good post...you been on fire lately.
And there is a very simple difference between the whole see mistakes and want to fix em, and the woe is us feeling in posts. Its easy to notice the difference. Im glad that our LBs are doing well enough to get the job done, it eliminates needs going forward. If DQ and Gocong can solidify the LB spot, we have 2 less high round draft picks we NEED to make to move forward.
at the beginning of the year it seemed we needed going forward
1-2 WR 2 LB 1 RT 1 CB 1 S 1 DE
It seems like with the success of Mitchell (since the move), DQ, Gocong, MoMass/Cribbs/Little, Young/Adams, and in small parts, Dimitri Patterson, our needs are shrinking, and we could begin to use our picks on upgrades rather than NEEDS
