Brandon Jackson heads to injured reserve in Browns final moves Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 3, 2011, 9:42 PM EDT Brandon Jackson AP
The Browns started their cuts early Saturday by letting go of 17 players.
After a long day of moves, the final ten players moves they made will complete our 32-team journey through Cutdown day.
Cleveland placed Brandon Jackson on injured reserve with a toe injury. There was some dispute about how long Jackson would take to recover, but the Browns clearly felt they couldn’t wait for him. Perhaps an injury settlement could be possible if he gets healthy.
Also cut: OL Dominic Alford, QB Jarrett Brown, RB Tyler Clutts, LB Archie Donald, RB Quinn Porter, DL Brian Sanford, OL Jarrod Shaw, LB Brian Smith, and WR Rod Windsor.

Really not one single surprise on that list.

Eh, Clutts, and Porter "surprised" me only because they've shown enough this preseason to be given a chance...
Brown cause they WERE so high on him...
So we rollin with 2 QBs or bringin someone in?

I suspect that we'll go with 2, and try our best to re-sign Brown to the practice squad.
It would surprise the hell out of me if someone grabbed him for their 53 man roster.

If you had to choose between Brown and Pryor...
Lets try to ignore the 3rd round pick given up for Pryor to make the argument fair...

I agree.
QB Graham Harrell cut by GB might be another option to sign to the PS.

This is what I posted earlier today. I was pretty accurate although we saw most of these coming... Quote:
So we've cut 17 guys out of 80. Down to 63. That means 10 more have to go.
Brandon Jackson likely goes to IR so that means we are down to 62. Maybe Eric Hagg goes to IR as well. 61.
Also Titus Brown has a high ankle sprain. Don't know how long that will take to heal, IR. 60.
Rod Windsor seems likely to be cut. 59.
I say one of Porter of Armond Smith is cut and we try to get one of them on the practice squad. 58.
We also three undrafted linebackers still on the team; Archie Donald, Brian Smith, and Benjamin Jacobs. I'd say at least two of them gets cut. 56.
Jarrod Shaw, Oniel Cousins, Dominic Alford, and Pat Murray. Two of them will get because we currently are carrying 11 offensive linemen. 54.
Then there are currently 9 defensive backs on the roster (if Hagg goes on IR). I'd say it's between Ventrone, Dockery, and Patterson. I say Ventrone goes. 53.
There it is. And I didn't even cut anyone we all liked.
(I'm hoping we get some guys in on trades for conditional picks. I'd really like to see Joselio Hanson come in as our third corner.)

QB Jarrett Brown, RB Tyler Clutts, LB Archie Donald, RB Quinn Porter, DL Brian Sanford, OL Jarrod Shaw, LB Brian Smith, and WR Rod Windsor.
All options for the PS I think.

All eight 2011 draft picks + 3 UFA's made the roster (subject to change if the Browns sign up released vets as backups). Add these guys to last year's draft and UFA and it equals 1/3 of the roster.

It's a fallacious argument, because Pryor would have cost a 3rd round pick. There is no way I would have given that up to draft him. I do think that both Brown and Pryor are longshots to ever be starting NFL QBs ..... and Brown might be a slightly longer longshot. That doesn't mean that I like Pryor a lot more ..... but maybe ever so slightly more. I do not think that he will ever be an effective starting QB in the NFL, so giving up a 3rd would have been a waste IMHO. Given that he would have cost a 3rd, I'll take Brown with about the same upside, and no such draft pick cost.

This is not a fallacious argument. It is very clear that the question is no matter what it would cost to get either player, which would you rather have? It is obvious to most that a third round pick is too much to draft Prior as a developmental QB but it is still a good question. I don't think either guy will be successful as an NFL QB. I do, however, think that TP has the size and speed and hands to be be an above average WR. As a WR, TP will be worth the third round pick.

I don't believe that either guy will be an effective and long term NFL starter at QB.
If that is the case, then it does not really matter if one might be 10% better than the other. If he still cannot be an effective NFL starter, then you have a backup at best, and a guy washing dishes at worst.
Beyond the obvious holes in Pryor's game, mechanics, and accuracy, I also worry about his attitude. I wonder if he will do what he must to master the mental side of the game. I would also have a great deal of concern if a guy scored an 8 on the Wonderlic. That alone would not be a deciding factor, but taken into account with other factors, it does create a scary picture if you are making a draft pick investment.
So .... I guess the best analogy would be this: If it takes a dollar to be an effective starter, and one guy currently has 10 cents, and the other guy has 15 cents, is there an appreciable difference? I do not believe that either guy will succeed long term in the NFL as a starter. Thus the argument then falls back to cost. Brown was free and Pryor would have cost a 3rd round pick. If a guy is a shot in the dark, then I would go for the free player. If Pryor were an UDFA, then I would have no problem with bringing him in to compete with a guy like Brown. If he succeeds, great. If he doesn't, then nothing lost. That's not the case though.

The surprise, if there really is one, is that Clutts got cut. I actually think he's performed better than Marecic. I don't believe this is the kinda coaching staff or FO that would keep a guy just cause they drafted him. So I'm guessing Marecic showed something in practice that we didn't see in the preseason games.. at least I didn't see.

So you've already written him off? Four pre-season games into his career is a little hasty IMO.

No, but I was surprised how the tenor on him had changed... After the draft there were so many people trying to say "it was a good pick, he's already a better fit for the offense, Vickers is overrated and will want too much money (lol)" and now there were several posters on here wanting him cut facing little to no opposition.
I didn't want to compound the mistake by cutting him unless we could sign a FA who would be a significant upgrade.

Way too much is made of players, (both boom and bust), with so little book on them.
When we're talking about a rookie, at any position, with less than 6-weeks of NFL experience who is labeled anything other than simply a rookie then it can be accurately said that the evaluator is not even giving him a chance.

This x1000. I wanted to keep Vickers and wasn't a huge fan of the Marecic pick, but I'm going to give him a chance. Anyone remember where Vickers was as a rookie?

Vickers started one game, earning three rushing attempts for two yards and catching six passes for 60 yards. He saw significant time on special teams, having five kick returns for 84 yards. wikiI wonder how many fans were furious because he wasn't starting back then?

Well you kinda went overboard there. I never said that Marecic was horrible,, he may still prove to be good. I just didn't see it.

You are entirely correct. He was supposed to be the versatile type of fullback out of college. He actually played some running back at Colorado.

Marecic looks like a rookie that is still in NFL awe mode, just like last year when Colt was really struggling. That guy named Haden was looking like a complete bust in camp. They turned out pretty good and so will Marecic.
One thing I would really like to see Marecic do is really concentrate on getting low on his blocks. Drive at the linebackers knees and he has to protect himself. If you take them high they are just going to slide off and make the tackle.

Didn't like the "value" of the Marecic pick but like the player...he will be fine, give him some time...he was a FB and LB in College...needs some games, maybe the whole season, to settle into his role....he's a football player and will help out on ST too..and I think he'll bee just fine at FB...

Vickers stressed his versitility in college as a reason to be reacquired by the browns. I was happy with vickers, who ended up making around the same as b. Jackson, I would prefer he be here. Even if we drafted owen, some grooming time would have been useful. It is just the fullback spot, so not a giant issue. I expect we'll have a very fun first 10 regardless of fb play.
I do find it strange how right the fans have been in talent evaluation compared to the fo's. But I think we'll be better off than most teams with this FO. The small problems no longer mean a systemic purge is necessary. This FO is solid; over time the roster will fully reflect that.

That being said " Clutts had the better Pre Season ! .. Saw it with my own two eye's.. Marecic is on the team because Heckert made him a fourth round pick . Shoot he might develop into an Pro bowler for all I know ..

I like Marecic but taking on defenders high is a real pet peeve of mine when it comes to evaluating fullbacks. The low man is going to win the batttle 99% of the time.

We had Terrelle Smith on the roster for Vickers' rookie year. Also, "starter" doesn't carry much weight when talking about fullbacks. Does the offense line up four receivers wide with a single back on the first play of the game? Then the fullback isn't a starter. Does the offense run a two-back backfield with two receivers and a blocking tight end on the first play? Starter.

Getting back to the roster ...... I was kind of surprised that we kept a FB plus 4 TE. To me, that seems overkill for a WCO team. I also don't know if we'll stay with 10 DBs and no backup OT. lol I could see us picking up a veteran OL, at the expense of a TE or DB. (and yeah, I know that they could consider Cousins a backup at Tackle .... but given Pashos' injury history, a veteran backup at Tackle would seem prudent) A guy like Pat Murray could even be at risk here if the team decides to simply keep the same position numbers they currently have. I would not be stunned if we brought in a veteran DT. The team did seem to like what Paxson did in the pre-season, and Schaefering seems like a decent, if unspectacular "plugger" type. I think that they will look at DTs to see if they can find another penetrating type DT to add. Maybe they keep the 4 DT they have and add one to the mix. Who knows? LB depth still scares the crap out of me ..... but then again, our starters scare the crap out of me too. Worst overall position on the team IMHO. That being said ..... I don't see a huge opportunity to upgrade here via the waiver wire. The only position I could see them changing might be Jacobs ...... and maybe they want to develop him. Who knows. The decisions at LB really confused me this year. I really don't see Gocong as a fit ...... but who knows? As far as the overall roster goes ..... if I am a guy like Eric Hagg or Ray Ventrone ...... or a 4th TE like Alex Smith ... than I'm not feeling terribly secure. Of course, it is possible that the reason we kept 4 TE is to be able to use one as trade bait. Stranger things have happened. I just have a feeling that we'll see a loss of a player at each one of those positions (TE/DB) before the season starts ...... probably to add a veteran OL/DT/LB/RB .... depending on what's available.

The league is structured for the passing game and we very well could become a primarily nickel base defense. The way Ward tackles, he is about like having a linebacker in there anyway. So I could easily see a situation where we are in a lot more of the 4-2-5 than the normal 4-3-4. Heck even the Steelers and Ravens are going to throw it around like crazy.
Even if we are primarily playing a nickel, the linebacker corps is scary. Fujita and DQ have major history of injuries neither has played 16 games in a long time and Gocong and a stinger is not good news as that injury can often be career ending. You just don't know when it comes to nerves. Titus high ankle sprain and Maiva coming off of his own season ending injury.
OL is where I expect us to make a cut so we can pick up a backup at tackle. Hell we could cut all the backups and start fresh with cuts and it wouldn't bother me as none are anything to write home about.
Injuries to Watson(hip and hammy) along with Moore, and his history of injuries that date back to college, make Alex Smith extremely valuable and Jordan Cameron is gonna be a freak. The catch he made in Philly sold me on his future with the Browns.

I don't know why some are surprised by the fact that we kept 4 TE's ... I've been saying all along that we probably would, because Smith can also line up at FB and he is also valuable on short yardage two TE sets.

I assumed he showed better in practice as well. I thought Clutts showed well enough to look better (not great) in the pre's. I am assuming he must do well on stuff that was not to be shown in the no-count games, and which will be gameday readied. Might also just be too few reps for too many people. I trust most of Heckert's judgment thus far. Plenty of time to write Maretcwhatever off yet if he is a bust. Sure do miss Vickers.

Well I knew there would be folks I would feel bad about them being cut. Looking for those, I find none, onlly a list of 10 players I knew would be cut, and no mention of the 17.
Wonder who the 17 were, As late as early saturday morining the roster still listed 80, there are 10 cuts listed so who are the other 15-17 ?
