I'm a believer in tougher punishments for Millenial-generation children, and I know a lot of people on here are old-school Boomers who raised their kids with more authority than some parents do nowadays, but this is a bit extreme. Somehow, the guy also made $100,000 bail, so he is loaded. I hope he is beat on while in jail--if he is sentenced to jail. He'll probably get probation and counseling.

(CBS/KCBS/AP) NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Sloan Briles, a Southern California father, was jailed on Monday for allegedly slapping his 7-year-old special needs son aboard a tour boat and tossing him overboard into Newport Harbor.

The incident reportedly happened Sunday afternoon as the 35-year-old Briles and his girlfriend were arguing aboard a commercial sightseeing boat carrying an estimated 85 passengers, says Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino, reports CBS station KCBS.

The boy was crying because of the argument and was then thrown into the busiest part of the harbor by his father after being hit repeatedly, reports the station.

"Three boaters that were nearby came to the boy's rescue," said Amormino. "The father did eventually jump in, but by that time the boy was rescued by a boater."

Both the boy and his brother were later returned to their mother's care, the Associated Press reported.

Briles became combative with deputies when they boarded the vessel to arrest him, said Amormino.

Didn't need to know anything more than that. I hope karma plays an active role in his life!

And not one of these 83 other people on board beat the crap out of the guy?

There's no way I witness that and do nothing. At the very least I grab a life preserver and jump in the water withe the kid.

That has to be the most ridiculous paragraph to lead into a story that I've ever seen. Nothing you said has any relevance to this story.

What does have relevance is that this guy is crazy and has no business raising a special needs child, or probably any child for that matter.

Well, I felt I needed to explain that to Asian since he seems to feel this is just a case of strict parenting.

I would have jumped in to help the kid, then got back on the boat and kicked dad's ass for doing that and causing me to get my clothes wet.

I'd have thrown the guy in and told him to save his kid.

I'm not going to defend the guy but there is another side to this story. He seems like a jerk with poor judgment but I'm not so sure he's the monster that this judge and jury has decided he is.

Dad: It was 'horse play' before boy went overboard

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A man accused of throwing his 7-year-old son overboard during a sightseeing cruise around California's Newport Harbor says he and the boy were just "horse playing" and talked about jumping in the water together.

"I was not trying to kill my son. We were playing in the shallows," Sloane Briles told KTLA-TV on Tuesday. "I discussed it with him. We'd jump in together and just thought it would be funny, ha ha."

Two of 85 people who were on the Sunday afternoon tour saw things differently. In 911 tapes released Tuesday, the passengers expressed shock and disgust after seeing Briles toss the boy into the water.

"I'm on a boat tour called the Queen and there's a man who just threw his son overboard," a woman told an Orange County sheriff's dispatcher.

"This man has been bad on our whole trip and he's swimming back to our boat now," she said.

Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said Briles, 35, was on the tour with his girlfriend and two sons from a previous marriage. Amormino said they got into an argument and Briles threatened to toss the boy into the water if he didn't stop crying.

Staff members on the 42-foot boat said Briles told the boy he needed to toughen up then threw him into the water five feet below, said Charlie Maas, who oversees the tour company.

Someone on the boat threw the boy a life ring, and he was safely rescued, uninjured, by another boater. The father also jumped in to save him before swimming back to the tour boat.

Another 911 caller said she thought Briles was "drunk and violent."

Briles was taken into custody for child endangerment and resisting arrest. He denied witnesses' accounts that the boy was crying and said he had never hit his son.

His girlfriend told the New York Daily News that he was only "roughhousing" with his son as he often does and regretted his "stupid" judgment.

"His sons are his whole life," Jennifer Burrelli told the newspaper. "He would never ever do anything to hurt them on purpose. He knows now it could have gone badly. He doesn't even care about the arrest or his own name. He knows it was stupid."

She also said she and Briles were not arguing before the incident.

Both the boy and his brother were returned to the care of their mother. The couple was married in 2002 and separated in 2006 after having two children. They divorced in 2007.

Family court filings showed Briles lost his job in the mortgage industry in 2007 and got another job, but was injured and drew worker's compensation. He successfully petitioned to get his child support obligation reduced and tried for a second reduction, which his ex-wife, Christin, opposed.

"If he truly wanted to support his boys he would find a job," she wrote in the filing. She also wrote that Briles sees the boys only on his weekends and rarely calls them during his off weeks.

Briles pleaded guilty in in February 2009 to being in contempt for not paying child support and was sentenced to three years of probation, according to court records. Briles also pleaded guilty in 2011 to public intoxication.

Oh, I believe him.

"No, officer. There was a bee on my girlfriend's face and I tried to kill it. It just kept landing on her face and flying away as I attempted to kill it. That's why she has the black eyes, bloody nose, and swollen lip. I love her and would never do anything to hurt her."

I probably should have put that at the end of the graf instead of leading off with it. I think it is relevant-in light of several posts here in the past talking about punishment/discipline for kids--the younger generations are not as "tough" as older generations, etc. However, this case of "punishment is unwarranted."

hence, I'm no longer in journalism, so my writing is starting to slip.

I hope the guy gets his just deserts in jail. unfortunately, I've read he was released on 100k bond and is free.

Ammo is just jumping on the tackle with "Ya think?" At least JulesDawg explained why the OP's original post sucked.
