Not as bad as Ike (9/20/08) for the whole town, per se, but individual sections were damaged heavily. Chesterland's Giant Eagle clocktower was damaged as well.

We are lucky nobody was hurt. EF1 means 95mph sustained sped winds. 50-75 yd width and 3-5 mile length.

Not Newton Falls '85, but still scary. Other than this storm, Ike 2008--the only other one to approach the level of damage was 7/28/93 microburst--that one came after a 96 deg. day...up Wilson Mills and zigzagged southeast.

Giant Eagle's PR rep didn't have much to say on the situation--it's Giant Eagle, of course. High prices and Pittsburgh allegiance

( the link will not work--only part of the link was able to be copied into the box).

Giant Eagle spokesperson Paula DePasquale issued the following statement Thursday morning:

"During the early morning hours, it is believed a small tornado damaged our Chesterland Giant Eagle location. The store was not open to customers at the time, but was staffed by five Team Members. All Team Members are safe and there are no reported injuries. The store sustained some structural damage to a wall and some other areas of the store, and lost electrical power. Giant Eagle is working with structural engineers to ensure the integrity of the building before reentering to begin the process of returning power, ensuring food safety and readying the store for reopening."

Glad no none was hurt.

Tornadoes scare me more than any other weather related hazard, because you can do every single thing right ...... and still get wiped out. There's often little or no warning like there can be with Hurricanes. They just appear, destroy, and fall apart.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Exactly Ytown. I am not so worried about the hurricane coming this way because of the amount of time we get for warning. Tornados scare me just like you cuz there really isn't that much warning. The time is getting better but it's still not a 24 - 48 hour window like with a hurricane. 15 minutes just isn't enough time. It would be nice if they could predict tornados and give everyone enough time to get to safety.

Correct. With hurricanes - you have warnings. Sometimes a weeks worth.

Tornadoes? You're lucky if you have 5 minutes of warning.

Really sunk home a couple of years ago when one tore down a school in Toledo - and another one devastated an area not more than 20 miles from me.

To see homes literally ripped off the foundation - houses demolished. A forest that, basically, had a line wiped out.....the line of the tornado....totally leveled every house in its path, and left a line through the forest of downed trees.

Worst part was, that night I went to bed early. My daughter brought my cell phone in to me. Woke me up and said "Dad, grandpa wants to talk to you." He was in Oklahoma at the time. "Arch, how's everything there? The hospital called and said there were tornadoes. Are you okay?"

I had no idea.......yet 20 miles away, people died. Homes were literally gone from the foundations.......

There isn't much warning with tornadoes.

good post.

although our family lost power and may have lost the computer--or at least parts of it--we're still alive. the computer can be replaced. we had no idea that anything worse than severe storms--which are common in the summers here-was taking place.

also, our town was fortunate nobody was hurt. we need a tornado siren.
