Irene

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. Especially those that are in the direct line of Irene. Get your emergency kits prepped and make sure you are ready to evacuate.

I am going in to have some teeth surgically removed around 11:30 today and then going to get things started in prepping my place for the hurricane.

Be safe everyone.

yeah, looking like it might be a 3 possible 4 when it gets to that area. 1 and 2 not too big a deal for modern construction. but 3 and 4 can scare the bejesus out of you.

Plan, prepare and good luck.

Getting the plans in place right now. Making sure I know where all the cat carriers are, the important papers and all that good stuff. I have to get some more duct tape for the louvred windows and some plywood for the slider and the baynotbay windows. Got dry goods and non-perishables all ready to throw in the jeep, it may end up being a small caravan of us going inland.

Florida, I have tons of bottled water. Just bought 2 cases the other day. I will be going through my food closet to see what I have to take with me. I have lots of peanut butter.

If anyone needs a place to stay, we have a couch up here in Chicago. Ok, not likely.

Be safe and get lots of water ready.

Hopefully the storm will die off before it hits land.

Stay safe.

I say lots of water because if the storm hits, and takes power out, you could be days possible a week or more without electricity and/or drinkable water.

You don't have to take it all with you to the shelter, but have it available when when you can return home, as you may be living primitively for a bit.

I'm not in a storm area like that, but I still keep gallons of water on hand just in case. There have been instances where the water has been shut off for repairs to lines, or when they have a boil alert, and I would just as soon have safe water available.

Hell, I can buy water for 79 cents per gallon, stock it up, and use it to water plants when I feel that it has been on the shelf long enough. It's a pretty cheap contingency.

Just a little wind & rain.
I've got a friend that lives in St. Croix, where the eye passed directly over, and she said this one is nothing.

Go out and enjoy the breeze, shelter for the worst of it, then go back out and enjoy the majesty of it all.

It was still a TS/low Cat1 when it went by St Croix, if it makes it to Cat3 like they say, that is the difference between 75MPH winds and 110-130mph winds.

Cat 1 and 2 I'm staying home, might not even put up all the hurricane panels, Cat 3 I'm prepared and shuttered, Cat 4 I'm considering shuttering and evacing, Cat 5 my butt is out of here.

No offense to the great people of Houston but I wish Irene would turn and head towards them. As it moves inland it would give us a good couple of days of sorely needed rain.

lol...

And my brother and his buddies are going to be headed down there Friday night to stay in Myrtle Beach for a week.....

I guess their hotel is a couple blocks from the beach....but he keeps telling me that there's a chance that the beach might come to them.......he is a glass is half full kind of guy though...

As of this morning, they are still going ahead with everything as planned....I wonder how it's going to work out for them.....

I was thinking the same thing....we could use rain here in SE Tennessee.

Jan.....looks like it is tracking a bit off the coast of the Carolinas. The really heavy stuff will hopefully pass you to the east.....but, be prepared....prepared to hole up for several days with no power or help, or be prepared to jump in the car and head out....though that call really needs to be made a few days early. If you are going to leave with the masses, you're going to be stuck in a massive jam.

That's the hard part about deciding when and if to leave. You have to do it a few days early because EVERY hotel is booked for hundreds of miles inland. Fifty miles inland is usually enough, but the fact is you can't find anything there and end up driving HUNDREDS of miles, stopping at every crappy hotel along the way since you have learned from experience that any place worthy doesn't have a room open.

Your best bet is to park at a decent truck stop and sleep in the car. They offer decent restrooms , have showers for rent, and usually fairly decent food....be a trucker for a few days....those guys do it for 30 years.

Come on to Tennessee, I have a bed you can have and plenty of food and drink.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Well if any thing Houston could sure use the rain.

Still haven't heard from my Daughter yet, she was supposed to fly out of the Bahamas this morning.

Peen, thank you so much for the offer. That gives me three inland options. I have friends in Columbia, SC and in Charlotte, NC that have offered me a place to stay if I have to evac. I am praying very hard that it goes completely out to sea and doesn't hit us or OBX. I am checking every few hours with The Weather Channel for updates and been going up topside to "smell" the weather. Clouds have been incredibly thick all day. Got some awesome shots of a very beautiful sunset.

I will keep everyone posted. If they do call for an evac, I will be heading out late tomorrow/early Thursday am.

Again, Thank you so much Peen.

No problem, but you don't need to come this far....I hope, or that's one hell of a storm.

Get on the phone and find a hotel maybe25- 50 miles inland.

This storm is going to go up the coast, and if by chance not, as soon as a hurricane hits land, it falls apart quickly.

That isn't to say it won't rain like the dickens, and it won't be windy, but it won't be like the shots you see of the weather guy standing on the coast during landfall.

That is SOP for many I know in Florida. Book a room and go there. You're close enough you can still get to work if need be but far enough inland you aren't in any real danger unless you are the unlucky one who has a weakened tree fall directly on your room....and that can happen in any storm.

In Florida about all the further inland one can go is 50 miles. Places like Orlando as an example don't get devastated by a hurricane...a example of how a hurricane falls apart quickly....like 5-10 miles quick. You take away the warm water and you kill the eye.

Yep....it's going to cost you $75 for the room, and cost you a couple hours of time driving there and back to work the next day, but call it insurance.

Pretty cheap when you add it all up.

Good Morning guys,
Looking at stocking on batteries, some food and possibly moving cars into garage. Thinks that the way Irene's tracking, she might be up the Chesapeake Bay sometime Sunday....Wow, first the Earthquake and now this, What's next ?????

Well, I am now getting the Jeep set up for a fast move outta town. Being that I am only 300 feet from the beach I have to get my ducks all in a row and get ready to move out. Myrtle Beach/Wilmington are looking to be on a direct hit path for Irene and now that she is gaining speed and losing pressure she is turning into one helluva nasty witch.

The talk is that when she hits the Carolina's she will be a Cat 4. Even a few of my friends that have been through hurricanes here have been preparing to evac. I am getting things together for a short stay away from home and hopefully Irene turns and goes out to sea and doesn't do any damage to anyone.

Yes, they are evacuating the entire Outer Banks at the moment. It's just a precaution for now because of the fact that once the water gets to a certain point it isn't safe to have the ferry's on the ocean moving around.

Horry County Emergency Management is currently at an OpCon 4 and following very closely and will be making decisions on evacuation processes as needed. Currently I am not OVERLY worried but I do know that we can get the word for voluntary evac at any moment.

Right now the path is showing a direct hit to the Myrtle Beach/Wilmington area. If we get lucky this might just move off the coast a little further and we won't have to evacuate.

I'm keeping my prayers going that it will just move off the coast enough to just give us high winds and nasty rains, nothing like they are talking about right now. Last summer we had a nasty tropical storm in early August. I am hoping that is all we get from Irene.

Still a long way off... she could turn back out to sea and just smack Bermuda like Emily did in '87.

I know this sounds really bad but that's kinda what I'm hoping happens, but would prefer her NOT to hit Bermuda. There is 350 miles between our coast and Bermuda, maybe she will thread the needle.

When it comes to hurricanes, you just worry about yourself, then others after your needs are taken care of.

The people in Bermuda and the Bahamas are much better prepared than most think, and hurricanes are just a part of their life. Whereas US mainland doesn't always fair so well.

Man .. people complain about the weather in Ohio ...... but we get no hurricanes or monsoons ..... very few tornadoes ...... even fewer earthquakes of any consequence ........ moderate snowfall in the winter, mostly moderate temperatures in the summer ......(compared to many other places anyway)

The cost of living is decent .... insurance isn't through the roof .....

Yeah, Ohio's OK if you ask me.

Update: Plywood has been delivered. Got my duct tape ready for the small windows. Bags of dry goods are packed, backpack is packed, important paperwork is packed and all I have to do is load the Jeep and get the flock outta here.

It is now officially a Tropical Storm Watch here on the Grand Strand. What a feeling of relief when I turned on the Weather Channel and the radar was showing that we will be getting a bit of weather but not a direct hit. We are under a low/mod threat for Irene. It looks like I may be riding out the storm and hopefully getting some awesome video. But that could change by tomorrow.
