My daughter is off to college this year and i'm looking for the best place to buy her books...
Amazon has them for prices that are better than the college bookstore. I've done some googling, and found a place called prioritytextbooks. They have some of her books for significantly less than amazon 70-80 compared to 150 per book. I'm a little leery of shopping at a place i'm not familiar with.
can anyone point me in the direction of any sites you have found that were reliable?

I typically just shop around, but one site I have had a lot of success with is www.chegg.comIt's hit and miss depending on the course, but I've used it quite a bit
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

some of those deep discount textbook providers are shipping you "international editions" which are softcovers made for foreign countries. Same content generally, just make sure you shop by isbn to get the same edition. They'll actually have printed no them "Not for sale int he united states." They won't tell you that but you'll see it when you receive the book.
My wife and her sister use Chegg, but I always liked to keep my textbooks, so I bought them.

Look into renting books too. We rented some of my son's general education books that he knew he wasn't going to keep. It saved us around $100 each semester. Renting books is kind of hit or miss as well (particularly once the student has taken most of his/her general ed classes), but it is a good way to go if you know your kid won't be keeping the book.
Good luck!

Good point about the international versions. And while they might work for your situation, one thing to be aware of is that most places won't let you resell them should you want to after the class is over.

yeah i just was reading about the international versions myself. Some posters on a forum were saying they are black and white sometimes, and on phonebook quality paper. Can anyone attest to that? don't think its a big deal if my daughter is going to just use it for the tri-mester, but if she plans on keeping it, then it might not hold up.

I've become a big fan of TextBooksRUs. The prices are cheaper than Chegg and the books are of good quality. It's a huge saving to just rent the book instead of buying it.

so would it be prudent to say that if its a class where she's not planning on keeping the textbook, that the international version would be ok for the 3 months she's using it, but for something she's gonna keep for reference shell out the cash for the better quality book.
the rental options that were posted look appealing too....i'm going to sit down with my daughter and talk about what she wants.

All of the textbooks I saved are in one of my closests ... on a shelf ....buried behind a ton of other stuff. I have a couple of texts that I thought I woudl enjoy reading the rest of the way through. Somehow I never got to them, and now I can't even sell them.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

lol...i think i have some in the attic of my ex's house. I hear ya. I was implying more of a basic biology book, that might be used for reference for her entire college stay. That wouldn't hold up if it was crappy quality.

If you do go with Amazon, as a student she'll be eligible for a free year of their Prime service, which gets you free 2-day shipping on anything (not just textbooks) that is Prime eligible (which is just about everything). After the free year, she'll be eligible to retain the service at 1/2 price ($40/yr instead of $80) for up to four years. It's a great deal if you buy on Amazon a lot.

I don't know anything about the site or their reputation, but www.cheaptextbooks.com used to advertise on here all the time. They may be worth looking into.

Not for now - but for the future, strongly encourage your daughter to make friends with people in the same major, that are a year older. And make sure she tells them she'd be interested in their texts the following year if the prof's don't change the book.
My son saved a bunch doing that.

Amazon, half.com, ebay, and craigslist are the best.

I found that buying text books prior to showing up to the first class was often a waste of money. Many profs only used one or two of the 'required' texts. Making buying the workbooks or other texts just spent cash you can't get back.

Oh definitely.
I had a couple of professors who copied off the pages they wanted us to work from, with their notes already on them. A few didn't care if we ever bought the book.
