About a month ago my fiance and my dog, Penny, was hit by a car and passed away. She was the sweetest thing ever, a lab/beagle mix. It's been a rough month, especially for my fiance, but things turned around.
We went up to the pound today and fell in love with a 5-6 year old Black Lab that we named Rufus. Kind of funny, as it is the same way that we found our previous dog. We walked down the aisle and took a dog out for a walk that we thought we liked (a 3yo FAT yellow lab). We made this decision based on how much the dog barked-the less barks, the more they intrigue us. Well, once outside, he didn't exactly take to us, and we were less than "'impressed" as bad as that sounds.
So we go back in, walk down the aisle and my fiance calls me over to look at this dog that we both missed on our first pass through. At this time, all of the dogs were going CRAZY, but this one sat there with a sad look on his face. He looked to be a lab mix, was calm, and looked sweet as can be. So we go to take him outside, and he looks as though he likes us. We are sitting on this bench talking about whether or not we really want to do this (more specifically her, as I'm going to be gone for the next 1 1/2-2 months), and Rufus comes over and sits right in front of me and puts his head on my lap and just sits there. Decided right there that he was the dog for us.
We get him home and we are a little worried about how he is going to take to our little cat, Polly. Well, as it turns out, he must have been housebroken pretty well in a place with cats, because they get on fine. (As I'm typing this I just witnesses a little scuffle because I think the cat scratched his nose). Anyways, he's incredibly sweet, takes treats nice, eats his food, is very well socialized (didn't chase after people, dogs, or squirrels while out on a walk), and is pretty clingy in a good way.
We couldn't be more happy. He's been at the pound since the beginning of April, and probably didn't have much longer. I don't know if any of you has heard about the black dog syndrome, but an overwhelming amount of black dogs at pounds end up euthanized because people are less apt to adopt them for whatever reasons (not as appealing, don't seem as friendly, etc.).
I recommend anyone looking for a dog to try the pound first. If you look hard enough, you'll find a good one. I know everyone loves a puppy (I am one of them, but my heart melts at the pound), but the thought of saving this dogs life from almost certain euthanasia makes me feel all the better (and the already being housebroke thing makes it a little easier

)
But in all seriousness, I'm as happy as can be to have mans best friend back in the house but am terribly sad to be gone for the next two months. But I know he'll be here, a better place that he's been at the past two months.
