Question for the computer and smart phone literate...

I rely heavily on my Outlook schedule at work. I just got a droid (Droid 2 Global) from Verizon a few weeks ago, and am still getting used to it, and all the apps available for it.

While I have a great app where I shake the phone and it recommends an alcoholic drink for me, I'd also like to use the phone for big boy and meaningful purposes, such as merging my Outlook calendar associated with my work, with the calendar features (or apps) on the droid. Preliminary research (going into google and typing "how do I merge my outlook calendar onto droid") and even going through google calendars (figuring I could merge Outlook calendar with gmail account, gmail account is on droid, so it would convert...) didn't help me out so much, or got me to a point where I was scared to push buttons fearing I would export my entire calendar (and not have it anymore on Outlook).

So I came to this savvy bunch for help.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

Here is a site that gives a chart comparison of the various apps that will sync with outlook.

web page

I haven't used any of them first hand so I can't really say which is good.

I was in a similar situation, having used Outlook for years then switching from a Windows Mobile phone to a Droid X. I looked at all of the Droid apps that would interface with Outlook and they all had problems according to the reviews. I bit the bullet and switched to the Google calendar and never looked back. The learning curve was minimal and the sync issues are completely eliminated. I did spring for a cheap app called Calengoo that makes entering data more efficient and easier, and it has more options for repeating appointments.

However, there is a price to pay for this convenience. Your info is floating around in the Google cloud. I still keep a separate email for confidential info.

You can setup your exchange server to sync with your droid - no need for an external app. Your IT staff has to allow this (since I am my own IT staff getting it OKed was easy ) It works great; you can actually have multiple exchange accounts setup - it will keep your address books separate but combine them by name when looking at them. Pretty slick IMO. I've also setup separate exchange accounts for other clients that use outlook so I also get those e-mails on my phone. Again, the IT department had to OK it and have "push" mail setup on their end but that is not that uncommon.

If your IT department already has exchange setup to allow you to connect from other devices, you just need to:
1. Go to settings on the droid
2. Accounts & Sync
3. Add account button at the bottom of the screen
4. Select Corporate
5. Enter e-mail and PW - it will try to connect

You might luck out, depending on the configuration of your exchange server, have it auto configure and start syncing. If not, you'll need to get some info from your IT person probably.

Another screen will display if it can't connect that will want some additional information you may not have.

This is for a Droid, not a Droid 2 Global, but I'm guessing that the configuration is somewhat similar. Good luck!

What Columbus said.

And if that doesn't work, there is a nice app called "Touchdown" that is like $20, that will connect to an exchange server at times that the standard Android exchange setup doesn't(particularly with older versions of Exchange).

New phones

I've had this Blackberry Curve for better then two years now and well I guess I just had to tell someone that I finally figured out how to use it as a replacement modem to connect PC to the net. <Yahoo>

The media manager firstly would not load and install the drivers from the companion CD, the short of it was it would ask me to type in the connection number (last option) and so I figured they must have meant my phone #.
I finally goggled a search on how to install and the link provided illustrations and in the illustration for the dropdown menu for the # It read (*99#)

so I type it in and it worked.
So I can now see all the bells and whistles I have been missing around here </rant>

FYI, the android appstore on amazon has the Touchdown app on sale today (not sure for how long).

Awesome! I think you'll really like how well the integration works.
