My wife and I are moving to Cleveland in about a month. She is actually in Medina right now but has a job downtown and we're wanting to live in the city.
We're looking at places to rent close to downtown and was wondering about some of the areas.
What is it like in Tremont, Ohio City and Little Italy? Is the crime especially terrible or just be aware? We're coming from South Carolina, so we're used to some roughness but I didn't wanna end up in the ghetto or a bad area unwittingly.
Thanks a ton in advance.

I would put a call in to the local police departments in the areas you are considering. They usually have a dedicated officer for such issues. Good luck.

My advice to a young couple looking to rent would be to find a flat (upper or lower half of a double house) in Lakewood - between W117th and Warren Rd (W150th), north of Madison Ave. Rents will be higher than Cleveland-proper, but the houses are better kept and the neighborhoods are much safer. Still very easy access to downtown via the West Shoreway or I-90 ... 15-20 minute commute on a good traffic day.

Those aren't bad area's. In Cleveland, from my experience; even the "bad" areas, aren't bad.
I spent two years hanging out in some supposedly, really bad area's, places where the cops would always tell me I should avoid b/c they found "white boys like me shot in their vehicles in the area's I would frequent."
But in reality, its not like that. As long as you don't make yourself a target by doing something dumb, or provoke someone with violence--then you aren't going to have any problems.
The whole idea of east Cleveland as some horrible, dangerous place is a myth. As long as you don't mess with the hoods, then they won't mess with you.
I doubt you will find yourself in these area's. But if you do, don't panic, just move on through--odds are you'll be fine.
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Frequenting, or just passing through an area is one thing, but living there is a whole 'nother thing. Especially when you have a young - presumably attractive - wife's safety to be concerned with. A single guy could live in any of the places OU mentioned without too much worry, but having a wife and/or children changes the dynamic, IMO. I would be concerned for their safety in most Cleveland neighborhoods.

Little Itally and the area around Case Western and CIA offers a lot in the way of museums gardens etc. Just make sure you dont get into a heavily college kid area. Depending on what kind of commute you want would be the biggest issue.
The Ohio City area is very nice. Or you can go out to a place like Lakewood or similar and commute.
and being near the west side market to shop is great ! I use to live in university circle and every Sunday we would go to the west side market to shop.

Thanks for the replies so far.
From reading various information sites online, it sounds like most of the burgeoning neighborhoods are like that. The reason I singled out Tremont is there is a house we can rent relatively cheaply and not on the east side of Tremont (towards the river) but rather right off of I-90.
Lakewood and the various Heights on the east side are always an option but they're a little more expensive and further out from the city then we'd like.
Anyone with familiarity with parts of Cleveland I'd appreciate more input. I grew up in Warren and Oxford before heading to Athens so my knowledge with Cleveland is lacking.

Tremont is very hit or miss, as is Ohio City. Little Italy is basically on the campus if CWRU and will probably be very college-kid populated. Its also a short drive to downtown, though, and has UH and the Clinic right there.
You might want to also check out the Detroit Shoreway area.

there are some very nice Downtown apartment complexs,, High Rise types if' that's what you want. Little Italy is about as safe a neighborhood as you will find in any large city,.,
Also, there are some places in the Flats that MAY be for rent.
Don't know anything about Tremont or Ohio City

Tremont has changed a lot, it has became a popular urban neighborhood for young professionals, but so has lower Lakewood. If you go West side go West 130 th or further. West Paark or Kamms Korner area are still pretty nice and have easy access to downtown.

This is the part I would recommend as well. Very nice areas. I almost bought a 2nd home last year near there.

I currently live in Ohio City and have nothing but great things to report. Feel free to PM me if you'd like more information on apt complexes, specific areas to avoid and the like. I lived in Lakewood, and the area previously mentioned between W 117 and W 150 have continuously gone downhill, so much so in fact, that I moved to Ohio City to get away from it. Granted, it was petty crime, but still annoying just the same. Tremont and Ohio City do have some areas that are a little shady, but I feel that is the case pretty much in any suburb of any big city.
