Let's say the draft starts out something like this:
1: Newton 2: Dareus 3: miller 4: green 5: Gabbert
This looks like a lot of mocks out there right now. Most of these mocks have Peterson going #7 to San Fran and have us going in any of a number of directions (Bowers, Quinn, Jones, Fairley, Jordan, etc.)
From what Moon said, the Cowboys fans want their team to move up to get Peterson. If the first 5 went down that way, would you move down to 9 and survey what was left if you could add Dallas' third? Or would you make sure you got the guy you wanted (maybe even Peterson) right there? I would trade.
That would give flexibility to jump back into the bottom of the first 28-30 range from our 2nd rounder burning likely our 4th to get a guy like Paea or Heyward or Sherrod. Or if you wanted to, you could keep the 4 and sell Dallas' 3 to move up higher and take a guy like Kerrigan.
Just a thought. We've certainly done business with Dallas before on draft day.

I wouldn't because there's a floor/ceiling drop for me after the top5 of Dareus, Gabbert, Jordan, Green and Peterson...if the team trades up for Peterson you have 2 Teams sitting at 7+8 that really could need a guy like Jordan...they "could" go Bowers/Quinn+Fairley but it's not guaranteed
otoh, if we want 1 of the WRs I'd do it without hesitating as Jones should be there at 9...really depends on the grades Heckert has on those guys left...or maybe he does it knowing he's gonna pick up a boom/bust guy (Quinn/Bowers/Fairley) and likes the extra late 1st/high 2nd (+ maybe some 3rd day picks) as "safety net" for the selection....depending on the actual return I could understand that too even though I don't think the value of this draft, as in many others, lies in the picks 20-50/75...this is a day 3 draft imho, in rounds 4 to 6 there will be lots of prospects as talented as 2nd or 3rd rounders...it's a deep draft at many positions (WR, CB, RB, DE) but very light at the Top imho

For their 1st and a 3rd? No way.
For their 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th ..... I'd think hard about that one.
I think that there is a huge drop once you get out of the top 5-7 or so guys. I don't think that you trade down in this draft just to add one pick. I do also think, however, that Cam Jordan could fall into that range .... maybe. If he did, he would be the guy who would make that trade worthwhile.
Unfortunately, from what I have read, he seems to be moving up rather quickly on draft boards. He's not that superstar guy ..... but I suspect that he'll be a really outstanding player for a lot of years. Maybe not All Pro ...... but a guy who will produce far better than a lot of the other more "highly rated" type guys.
On the other hand .... a trade like this could make it worthwhile taking a risk on a huge talent/medical risk in Bowers. 2 2nd rounders would help offset the risk involved in taking Bowers if he was available.
I don;t see us moving down in this draft unless the trade is so overwhelmingly in our favor that the other team's fanbase goes into full revolt. lol Not in the 1st anyway.

No way I move down for just a 3rd. Especially w Dallas. Jones always plays hardball when he's asked to move down.

the trade down to Dallas makes some sense for both teams. But i don't make the move for a 3rd round pick, no way, that would be charity for Jerry Jones.

I concur and if Jerry has really made Peterson his 'local flair pick' of choice (tons of LSU fans in TX), then we can milk more out of him as well. He loves making the flashy move as we all know and they don't get much flashier on the field than Mr. Peterson.

I'm not surprised that people would want to stay at six to make sure they got their guy based on how they rate the player, but what I am surprised about is the outrage over the compensation to move from 6 to 9. Over the past few years, people have been saying that the draft value chart puts too much weight on high picks and needs to be redone and nobody will give up that much to move up yada yada ya. Well, according to the draft value chart, these are the values of the picks which have been discussed in this thread. [CLE-1] #6: 1600 pts [DAL-1] #9: 1350 pts [DAL-2] #40: 500 pts [DAL-3] #71: 235 pts [DAL-4] #110: 74 pts [DAL-6] #176: 22 pts The original proposition would have been: [CLE] gives 1600 [DAL] gives 1585 which is a slight "loss"under DVC, but in the spirit of the general feelings about the DVC's relevance seemed realistic. By comparison, YT's proposal would be: [CLE] gives 1600 [DAL] gives 1946 Which (again, according only to DVC) would be similar to trading the 3.5th pick for the 6th pick straight up. If you don't want to trade down because you want a guy that's there, or the player they're planning on drafting, then yeah, I say stay and pick. But it's certainly not giving the pick away.

I think Ytown was asking for too much. However, knowing how Jerry gets obsessed with his 'special picks' and thinking that Peterson might be that guy, I think we could wrangle their 2nd (perhaps giving them back a later pick if necessary)

Yeah, I think if we could get their second and give them back our 5 or 6 that would have to be a no-brainer.
If Buffalo takes Jordan instead of Miller, does that change anyone's opinion?

I like Jordan more than Miller, but either way I wouldn't make the trade expecting Jordan to drop to #9 (though if he did then great).
So, the trade to me is whether you want Peterson or are willing to take one of the "other DL" (Bowers if his knee is actually okay, Watt, Quinn, Aldon Smith, etc)

No way for a 3rd...NONE...
How bad do u want Peterson Jones???
No way would we even do it for a 2nd unless Heckert has this thing pinned down and LOVES someone at 40...
Letting the arguably #1 player in this draft get by you for a lousy 3rd rounder is flat out insane...

What my buddies tell me, I aksed them how I should play the GM game....They said they absolutly must find an OT and CB in the draft. Said they are shot at both positions. Cowboy brass have hinted that they don't like Prince (who knows what that means at this time). And everybody knows that Jerry is not going to be fired up about taking an OT that high.
As another poster pointed out there are tons of LSU grads and fans in the metroplex, so moving up to get Peterson would be a nice splash that Jerry wants. I would bleed them dry for the pick, Heck is doing a good job convincing people that we would take Pete and I think this scenerio is why.
If it goes down, I say we make them send us #1 & #2...possibly more, I don't know I think we could squeeze them, especially if it's true they don't like Prince. If they go OT in the first it will be a hard pill to swallow for Jerry, and all the CB will be gone by round two.

if Heckert views Peterson as the best player in this draft and by a wide margin, then I agree he would just tell Jerry that and hang up the phone.
if he doesn't or at least not by a wide margin, then having the ability to get a DE at #9 and then an extra early 2nd round pick (one of the LB like Martez Wilson might drop + maybe Rahim Moore for FS with our other 2nd?), I don't see how we wouldn't make that trade.

didn't the browns give up a second round pick to move up one spot to get KWII. Doesn't seem like asking for Dallas' second rounder is out of line for arguably the best player in the draft.

Exactly. If Jones wants to swap firsts so he can take Peterson, I ask for his 2nd and something else. If he says it's too much then I take Peterson and carry on. We're not here to make it easy for him to fill his seats, and that's how he runs his draft day trades.

There's not a chance I give up a player like Peterson for a 3rd rounder.
They'd have to cough up at least a #2 for me to think about it.
In all honesty, I think Peterson is the best overall player in this draft. He can play SS/FS or CB. His versatility and size are incredible.
I would hope the FO would be giddy if he fell in to our laps at #6 and just take it to the bank. Having Haden and Peterson moving forwarded would be amazing.

Bingo. Ten years of another set of Dixon-Minnifield ? No way I trade that away.
And with Ward back there, these two might even become better.

I would be pretty content on staying put and selecting Peterson..Not only can he play CB and Safety, He is a solid return guy. He is arguably the top rated player in this draft..He also would solidify our defensive backfield for the foreseeable future. Jerry would really have to ante up. Maybe he thinks Savage is still running the Show. I still can't believe we gave up a future first to select Quinn. The only Impact players I see down at 9 are Watt and Jones...Both fill a need. I would say take the BPA and that would be Peterson by far. We have a huge need at CB still. Wright is at best a nickel and quite honestly might be better off moving on without him. That leaves Brown who is coming off surgery and could be moved to safety and is also getting up there in age. Peterson and Haden are both good in run support also and are willing tacklers. Wright not so much. It's a no brainer if you ask me. The only Hiccup might be Jones.

I want what I want. Unless The Pick is gone already in 5, then maybe look for a little extra icing. But I think we want a top 6 guy, especially if QBs go fast and furious.

Let's say the draft goes like this:
1 - Newton 2 - Dareus 3 - Miller 4 - Green 5 - Peterson
I could see Dallas calling to move up ahead of SF to grab Amukamara and I could see Washington and Minnesota trying to move up to grab Gabbert.
Would you make any of those trades and if so would you have a preference?
I see SF taking Amukamara, Gabbert or Quinn and Tennesee taking Fairley or Jones.

I'd definitely trade down then....I'd be equally "happy" with Quinn, Amukamara, Watt, A. Smith, or Fairley in that scenario

Neither Minnesota nor Washington has a third rounder, which would mean we'd have to get a 2nd-rounder. That's a yes.

Wojo - I'd throw Jones and Jordan into that group. Though I like those pick as a prediction for the draft except that I would put Julio Jones with the Bengals. I hear that they like him over Green.
CleveSteve - What if the offer is for their 1st round pick this year and 2nd or 3rd and 5th next year?

Since you typically get a premium for trades that include future draft choices, a third rounder next year would not be sufficient. I would demand the following year's #2 selection or no deal.

I am not very high on him either but he falls into the grouping. I don't like his hands and I don't like how he always has some kind of injury. True that he plays though them. it just bothers me. I would rather get Hankerson or Young in round 2. Jernigan in round 3 or Pettis in Round 4 or Salas in round 6 and go in another direction in the the 1st round.

While I am against any specific "set in stone" value for picks (it's all about negotiations and using your head ... there is no such thing as a draft chart for me) ... I do want to chime in here ...
Last year New England traded their 25th pick in the third round (the 89th overall) to Carolina ... that pick has turned into the #33 overall for the pats ... by the way. Some of it is luck. And according to point charts I don't even know how you would deflate next year's picks ...
so ... I guess if you know how to trade correctly then you can make these things work to your advantage even if you don't take them to the cleaners. I would trade our 4th rounder (which is at 104? close to being the 89th) ... and let's say throw in a 6th rounder to net the first pick on day two ...
In the same way ... if someone offered us their first rounder and a few picks next year, I would take a mighty big look at any trade before simply turning it down.

Just clickin', and it's a different scenario. McShay was just on Mike and Mike and was saying that if Gabbert falls to 6 (he feels AZ would pass on him for a DE/OLB) then Cleveland's phone would likely be ringing, as a few teams in the next few picks would like to jump up over the others to draft him.
A little competition for that pick would be sweet.

Washington's owner has also shown that he doesn't value the draft as highly as most teams so it would be nice to move down to their spot and come out on top of a trade the way others have with them. Minnesota will not be as easy to come out on top of the trade as Washington could in my opinion. If Peterson, Darius, Miller, and Green are gone PLEASE trade down if one of the QB's are there and teams come a calling with great or good trade value the Brown's way.....

I normally think that when 2 teams trade and assuming that the points value on the trade value chart are very close to equal, that the team that gets more picks tends to come out of it better. But you still have to judge on a case by case basis. For example a franchise QB being available can greatly inflate the value of a pick, or in this case arguably the best player in the draft. As well, the value chart itself is somewhat odd in that the first several picks drop by 400 points a piece, which suddenly drops to 100 point decreases from 4 to 5 and onwards from 7 to 8, then 50 point decreases for a while.
Here's my point: in this specific case, I'm not giving up Peterson for their 1 and 3. It just doesn't fit. However, I would still do it for their 1 and 2 in a heartbeat, although I doubt that will be on the table.

This is a good point. It kind of assumes there are 3 elite players in the draft.

I like what you are saying ... but it all comes down to preference.
The 49ers have 12 .... yes ... 12 picks in this draft. Can Harbaugh use them all? Sure. But if I were him I would rather target a few players to build his version of the team on. 6 of those picks are in the last 2 rounds, so why not trade a few for 4ths and 5ths next year?
Another point ... the Eagles (once again it seems) have 10 picks. Do they really need 10 players? Let me rephrase that ... would 10 players even make their team and practice squad? It makes more sense for a team like Philly to move up and get a game changer.
For a team like us ... as much as I would LOVE patrick peterson (and I think he's the top player on my wishlist ... him or dareus at this point)... if we could end up trading down and getting a combination of let's say Julio Jones or one of the remaining DE's ... and then still adding in a solid playmaker like maybe Jimmy Smith out of Colorado or Aaron Williams out of Texas ...
I really think I would take a pair of 2 of the guys I just mentioned for a stronger impact than simply taking the "blue chip" ... and I think that's how we close the talent gap as well. In order to catch up to Pittsburgh and Baltimore we need a few studs. I completely get that. But if we trade down and still get a few great players .... we can be a very good team. I am getting pretty excited to see what we do now as I have no idea what to expect.

In the Great Blue North Report Mock Draft Quote:
Washington gets the 6th pick from Cleveland for the 10th and 144th picks this year and a conditional second round pick in 2012 which could esclate to a #1 depending on productivity.
That pick #144 looks like it is a 5th rounder. Would you make this trade?
On the surface I would prefer a 4th this year but I guess it will depend on the conditions to change that 2nd round pick into a 1st round pick.
I also think that Washington will have another crummy year so that should be a pretty high pick regardless of which round it is in. I would like some clause included that if their 2nd round pick isn't w/in the top 50 picks then we get their 1st rounder.

Not to draft Tyron Smith, that's for sure.
If the 1st rounder seems likely, then heck yes. Otherwise, I don't think so, unless they KNOW the guy they want will be there at 10.

if Dareus/Peterson/Green are all gone at #7 (or if they decide they aren't going WR in the 1st and Dareus/Peterson gone)
if Watt/Cam Jordan/Quinn all rated very closely (so no matter what, one will be there at #10)
if next year's 2nd seems likely to escalate to a 1st (I assume it'd be for Gabbert w/o clicking on that link. playing time for a rookie QB when there might not be much of a preseason is a risky proposition though)
