Saints land Shaun web page Rogers
Posted by Mike Florio on March 1, 2011, 9:26 PM EST
With two days remaining before the ability to sign a new deal expires with the labor agreement, veteran defensive tackle Shaun Rogers has a new team.

Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Rogers has agreed to terms with the Saints on a one-year contract.

Rogers was cut by the Browns last month. He has never been to the playoffs; he joins a team that will be favored to make the playoffs in 2011, if not the Super Bowl.

I would be lying if there wasn't the ittsy-bittsiest, teeny tiny part of me that wouldn't be to overly upset if ,,,oh....say.... he tore up his knee on his first play of practice. .

Cough, cough....Bentley.

i don't hate him...

why do people hate someone just because they got cut and then signed with another team? he played well when he was not injured.

analogy: you get fired from your job and get another job. then people at your old job hate you for finding a new one lol

Personally, the impression that he did not exactly go all out in the last couple of years doesn't inspire a great number of well wishes from me.

To each their own though.

You always see guys that are cut signed by a team that they destroyed at some point.

Rogers destroyed he Saints this year.

LOL - The Rish will be upset with this news as well. KS just doesn't prioritize winning...

I think he was lazy, but he's not our problem anymore. Best of luck to him when he's playing anyone but the Browns.

Glad he landed; hope it wasn't on top of somebody! Wish him well, think he is on a tailspin. Can't argue ability when he played. Injuries and more made him less impressive down the final stretch for me. But he is a player.

Can't argue his talent when he played?

The guy had 17 tackles and 2 sacks last year. That's pathetic. He had 36 tackles and 2 sacks the year before that.

Hell, Robaire Smith only played 5 games and had 25 tackles last year.

Last year, Rubin had 82 tackles and 2 sacks. That's being impactful. Hell, 2 years ago, when he was thought of as a guy who might, one day make a decent backup to Rogers, he had 38 tackles.

Rogers quit playing a few years ago. He stole money from the Cleveland Browns by giving damn near ZERO effort for the last 2 years, and doesn't deserve "Oh I hope he does well in his new home" ...... rather, he deserves "I hope they cut him on the 1st day of training camp for being FAT".

When healthy, he did very very well for us.. I got no hard feelings at all...I wish him well

Well, in a game we won (1 of 5) by 3 points, he blocked a field goal. Does that count?

He whined about "the coach not being nice enough to him" and "ignoring him at a party", or some other crap when Mangini was hired. He wanted Mangini to kiss his ass, and eventually, Mangini did so. That was one of Mangini's biggest problems, and he handled that one quite poorly.

You tear up your achilles and I agree your numbers are going to go down. the Saints are getting a guy another year out from that serious injury. When he tears it up I want to hear the mocking on the guy. Ican't believe some fans how they hate on a guy just because he is no longer a brown. It was a short sighted move by our front office. and In spite of the "Herock Warning" the saints landed a solid player who could become a force if the injury is completely healed.

Yet some fans here are completely heeled as well. we toss out a guy who tried to play through injury yet sign Mr. Glass Pashos and declare him our starter even thought the guys has been injured AT LEAST three straight seasons. And talk up DQ who hasn't played a full season since 2008.

The guy got cut from the Browns. I don't feel good for him, I don't feel bad for him. He got cut.

What's he supposed to do, go sit at home? If another team signed him (as they did) good for them and him.

I'd bet he's productive. I think it was a bit of a mistake to just let him walk as returning to the 4-3 would've freed him up a bit. He has lost a step and was unable to consistently draw a doubleteam this year...but in a 4-3, he could have been dangerous.

If we could have traded him, I would've been good with that but I think letting him go for nothing...especially when we have considerable cap room...was a bit short sighted.

Well, after I posted this morning, I figured it might get interpreted this way. But the reality is more pointed towards the Massive set back the browns took after trading Faine and giving a Huge amount of cash for less than a practise out of Bentley. It really Hurt our beloved team. I don't actually wish Shaun pain.

I have no problem with releasing him. I wouldn't want him teaching any draft pick we might get, his work ethic or lack thereof. Injured or not.

Now... if he was a coach (and paid like a coach), different story

No, teams swarmed him as soon as the Browns cut a very talented tackle. Obviously all these teams saw something the front office did not. Risky because of injury. That did not stop us from signing Free Fall Delhomme, or Tiffany Pashos or Mr Glass DQ for another year. Also I did not like the classless jabs our front office delivered to Rogers out the door...like they had to justify a very short sighted move.
Why not wait and see how the Achilles responds and THEN cut him if he is too injured. the way he was swarmed and the mock out the door is embarrassing as teams rarely get a free lunch to get a top player for nothing. SOS( stuck on Stupid)

Probably because we would have been paying him way more than any of these others teams.

Andr Rogers isn't simply injured, he is lazy. Maybe they were tired of him dogging every preseason. I sure as hell was.

We were going to pay Rogers $5.5 mil. He signed with the Saints for $4 mil. Reportedly, either the Redskins or Chiefs were offering him $6 mil, but he wanted to play for a good team.

And yes, I know what KC's record was last year. He probably also is happy about going to a 4-3 team.

Joe if Rogers were out half of the year this upcoming year for us would you have been the type to come on here and say something along the lines of...

"how come our front office which is SOS couldn't cut Rogers, he is old, he is made of glass, hasn't had effort in 3 years, and yet instead of getting younger at the position in a defensive line heavy draft, we stay with lazy old Rogers who will retire in a year or two anyway but we paid him $5.5 million"

I just suggest that because hindsight is 20/20 ... yet even though we all knew the risks of bringing in Delhomme and Pashos you continue to question it after the fact that it happened. We also all know the risks of bringing back D'Qwell, but we also know that the alternative is having a liability there and potentially a rookie or an out of place cast off from another team.

If anyone thinks we will have 22 probowlers by this fall on the roster ... wake up. Teams get ahead by taking chances on players. We "took chances" on Sheldon Brown (who was old) TJ Ward (who should have been a 3rd round pick and we could have drafted Taylor Mays) should have grabbed Colt McCoy by trading up to the 33rd overall pick... Should we trade away D/A and Quinn ... Should we wait around and try to get mcnabb but if we cant the market might be dried up for qb's ...

Yeah, every franchise makes mistakes but you just seem to keep pointing out the few that didn't work out. Which we can all see... but it doesn't mean that becuase we swung and missed a few times that we should stop swinging.

Since when did he have an achilles problem? It was reported as a hurt ankle, never as an achilles. Either way, an achilles injury to a lazy 390 pound guy, is not something that will heal quickly. IMO, he didn't play much last year more because he never practiced. He has skipped two training camps in a row, and was not productive at all last year.

You can continue to make your knee jerk assumptions, but the facts are the guy's attitude sucked and his work ethic was pitiful. Rubin replaced him successfully at a much lower cost. Youth was acheived and dead weight was tossed, plain and simple.

Really,, the only teams that were reportedly after him were the Redskins and they passed and the Saints who got him but for what kinda dollars.

Swarmed? Hardly.

OK,, Chiefs, Saints and Redskins.. Doesn't exactly constitute a Swarm now does it?

Oddly enough, his former HC is the DC in Kansas City and they didn't seem to make any major play for him.. Not sure what that says, but I don't think it bodes well for him..

We will see by his play this year and the play of our dline as to whom made the mistakes. Profootball talk indicated from Rogers agent the teams that were calling were more than the three mentioned as Rogers declined talking to teams that were losers, which is why he declined the redskins.

Must you load in 15 catfights? Gheesh,,,

Look, it will always only matter how a guy performs when given the shot. that's a given and you didn't need to remind me.

As for HIS agent saying he got lots of action,, what is it you expect him to say? Do you really believe he's going to say, "only three teams showed interest"? Of course not.

Bottom line, 3 teams showed enough interest to talk to him,, one took him, that's not a SWARM..
