Hey guys, I haven't posted forever, but I was wondering if you could help me with something for school. I go to Ohio State and am giving a speech about why big market teams have an advantage over small market teams in the NBA.

I've got some of it done, but I was wondering what all of you could come up with.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

In general, luxury living, high-end shopping, fine dining and nightlife that appeal to wealthy 20-somethings. In particular, 30+ titles between three of them and Madison Square Garden in the other.

It shouldn't be too hard to research.

At least these days you have a internet that makes the process much easier then hitting the campus library(s) seeking the reference materials needed.

I hope this is for a public speaking course of some sort.

Lol, ya its for my public speaking class. This is my final speech, and it isn't hard. Just figured it wouldn't hurt to pick some other people's brains.

marketing opportunities. still don't think it's important for guys like lbj who were doing national tv commercials anyway, but the smaller lesser known players.

there is more nightlife, more partying. and i think weather now plays into it.

i mean the chicago bulls are really good, but it's homegrown with them. in the giant 2010 free agent history summer, all they got was boozer and korver, they whiffed on wade, lebron, bosh, amare, etc. and chicago is the #3 market in the nba.

the league is set up for everyone to have a shot but the players are bypassing it by dictating where they go.

if you want to change things. take away the sign and trade option. penalize them for leaving.

In the past, it was all about playing the game - for money. Then it became playing for money in a city with nightlife. Then it became about playing the game for money in a city that had a "great" nightlife and good weather.

Millions don't matter anymore - they want millions, with expensive places to blow their money, in good weather cities.

And we wonder why these spoiled brats act as they do?

I don't watch NBA, or MLB, and I don't really care if the NFL sits out a year. There's too much other stuff going on in my life to worry about what these people do. They don't give a rat's ass about me, and I don't give a rat's ass about them.

NBA, MLB, and the NFL should be concerned about people like me. They are nothing without fans - and it seems the fans are not caring a whole lot anymore,.

Unlike Charlie Sheen, today's NBA player doesn't care about WINNING.

I was actually listening to some talk about this today...

Colin Cowherd mentioned it on The Herd today...what he said was if someone came to him for advice as an actor, and they asked "should i go to the pre-eminent acting school in america in a small city in missouri or should i go to NYC or hollywood?" he said i would 100% say go to Hollywood or NYC. Because of the one biggest word...opportunity.

In big cities, players and athletes are afforded many more opportunities in big markets. really opportunities for anything, nightlife, marketing, advertising, acting, entrepeneuring...anything they want to try, they can in a big city, as well as more money comes in and out. There is more money with the Knicks than there is with the Jazz or the Grizzlies...because theres more in big cities...more people, more travelers, more people looking for big name things.

its all about opportunity, and big cities have more of them

i don't buy that though. lbj had all of that playing in cleveland. the commercials, the marketing, all of it.

i think there were many factors that played into him leaving, i have told you guys before i think the national media, mainly espn pushed him out. they were doing it from the moment he was drafted. they didn't want him there and they did everything possible to make cleveland seem like a place where you couldn't win.

and i think that played into lebron leaving. i think he felt like he couldn't do it there on his own. and that he couldn't get anyone to come there and play with him (especially after seeing boston team up like they did, he knew he needed more than just what the cavs had)

and i actually said that in this very forum last year, before lbj left. that my biggest fear was that lbj felt like he couldnt get anyone to come here, and that he would bolt. and i think that fear came true. i think it's the biggest reason why he left.

i don't think lbj cared about playing in cleveland. i think he was fine with it. it was home for him, but he knew other guys just didn't want to go there. it doesn't offer a ton for millionaire kids in their 20's.

like i said, chicago didn't even really land anyone other than carlos boozer who nobody wanted, and kyle korver, and chicago is by far the biggest market in the midwest.

i don't think lebron left for marketing opportunities. he just left because he knew he couldn't get more help in cleveland. i have no problem with that. i have a problem with the way he played against boston, and the way he handled his "decision" and the way he has carried himself since.

i wish i could give you more insight on the nba and this free agency stuff, but i really think it just boils down to these young guys wanting to be in the big cities with the clubs and nightlife and just by the fact that everyone else has done it.

i think the best thing for the nba and fans in small markets is to see oklahoma city make a run. i think that would put some of the fears like lbj had to rest. that you don't need to be in a big market or surrounded by 3 hall of famers to win a title.
