Thread title of the year right there! These people are insane! http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/politics/116618063.html By MATT BAUME Updated 6:15 AM PST, Tue, Feb 22, 2011 Self-described "civil rights advocates" say that a ballot proposition to ban circumcision is on track for gathering signatures, meaning that San Franciscans may vote on the measure this November. The proposed law is being spearheaded by local resident Lloyd Schofield, according to the San Francisco Examiner. It's part of a national push to end the procedure, which some say is steeped in tradition but poses risks and has little medical benefit. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association do not recommend routine circumcision. Getting on the ballot is the easy part -- only about 7,000 signatures are required. Once it's there, advocates will have to convince voters that snipping off body parts is a bad idea. Although some studies indicate that circumcision reduces the risk of STD transmission, others have indicated that the procedure is not worth the associated risks and diminished sexual function. Several Jewish organizations have weighed in against the ban as well, pointing out that circumcision rituals play an important historical role for many Jews. Schofeld counters that under his proposed law, adults would be free to opt-in to circumcision, but infants would not be allowed to have the procedure until they reach 18. If it passes, those caught cutting foreskins would face a fine of $1,000 and a year in prison. Only people over the age of 18 would be allowed to have their foreskins removed.

Finally, someone dealing with the real issues! I will say, though, that reading this thread gave me the shivers. Circumcision. :shiver:

Reminds me of the story of the Dr. who performed cicumcisions at the local hospital. He saved up enough foreskins to have a wallet sewn out of them. Yeah, and if he rubs it hard enough it turns into a full set of luggage!

Frankly, I would tell them to stay the hell out of my pants unless invited in .... and I'm not inviting any San Francisco liberals anytime soon.

I don't think it's any more healthy than not having it done. As long as the parent and the eventual boy/man washes the area, it's fine. It can't be any more a bacterial growth area than a woman's area, if not less.
Plus, what man wouldn't want more nerve endings in that area of his body? I want mine back, not literally.
And why put the infant through the pain?
Someone told me it was also used to curtail the amount a boy masterbates too. Ya, like that can be curtailed. Please. And as if masterbation is something negative.
I see it as barbaric and something that somehow got labeled tradition when it should be abolished. If we had a son instead of a daughter, I told my wife I wouldn't let them cut him.
Even with all that I've said how I'm against circumcision, creating a law over it is stupid.

Yes he was, Luke chapter 2 verses 25 through 35 speak of it.
As for my personal opinion, this is a very dumb law but so is circumcising your child. In modern times, there's no medical reason for it. It was done in olden days due to lack of personal hygiene, but these days, as someone has already pointed out, it has long outlived its purpose.

Well, seems stupid to me.
Parents have the right to abort their babies, but they don't have the right to have their kids circumcised? Talk about hypocritical?
I imagine this bill will get shot down.

And that's fine if women don't like the uncut look. It's their preference, similar to how I don't like women with fake...uhhh, top sections. Thing is, they have a choice later in life to get that work done. Nobody asked me. If I didn't get that done and some woman I was dating didn't like my, uhhh lower section, then she can shove off. ...trying to be as tactful as possible.

Just as a general reply:
The whole "anti-circumcision" thing stems from the logical fallacy that "natural is best." These are the same wackos that believe in not vaccinating, home birth, co-sleeping, homeopathy as well as partaking in germ-theory denialism (The idea that pathogens cause disease, not the body being out of proper balance). If it's not natural, they don't want it and don't want it near their kids.

I'm going to agree with you that it should be left up to the man. I think that the amputation of foreskin is genital mutilation, and I'm not sure why this ever became such a common procedure in this country. The good news is the practice has been declining over the past couple of decades.
Seriously folks, let your son decide what he wants to do...this shouldn't be up to us.

So, we're wackos because we think it's a barbaric thing to do to a baby? Wow. Okay.
But...on the subject of this thread...I don't believe anything should be forced. I wouldn't mind, however, that parents are truly educated on this process before making a decision.

I had to fill out 3 separate forms and say yes to about 4 different people before they went through it.
Personally, I think it is a good practice as are most things that lower the risk for infection and/or STDs. However, if someone doesn't want to do it, then they have that right as well. Parents make choices for their kids every day, this is just one of them.

Research is proving this is not true, hence the numbers of circumcisions in the U.S. declining. This was my point that parents should be educated before making such a drastic decision for their son.

J/C I once heard it was very painful if done as an adult. But as I said, I just heard this but speaking for myself if I made it to an adult uncircumcised. It ain't happening

The majority of medical studies at this point still say the benefits outweight the risks. There are a few that conflict.
http://www.circinfo.net/pdfs/Guide_for_Parents-US.pdf
If you go to the main-page most of the studies on both sides are there. That link has an overview of the benefits in an easier to read format.
And, is it any more dangerious than a females parts from getting infected (w/o circumcision)? probably not. but there does not exist a similarly easy method of avoiding infections for females at this point.

If you believe in anti-vaccination, homeopathy, and deny that pathogens cause disease then yes, more than likely your beliefs aren't grounded in reality.
I didn't say that choosing not to circumcise is wacko. I'm just point out that if you're doing it because it's "more natural" to not have it done, it's probably the wrong reason as it's based off of wrong facts and opinion. As you said, it's not necessary in current times. Our culture has implemented better standards of living that make this practice obsolete, and as such, performing it is seen as undue harm to the child. That, to me, is a better reason that's backed by fact.
There are no sacred cows.

I hate fluff pieces like this. Come back to me when you get the signatures.
This is just like news stories on crazy bills that are introduced in state legislatures with no chance of seeing a committee meeting. The real story is that people waste their time with this crap.

I can speak from a medical standpoint... As a nurse having cared for geriatric patients for 14 years I can say I'm glad my parents made that choice for me all those years ago. Sure it may be sanitary when you are young and keeping it clean yourself. Once you are old and are reliant on others to take care of it for you... there tends to be problems. Let's just say, the 18- 23 year old CNA that is cleaning you up for $10 an hour isn't going to, typically, do a good enough job. The "issues" that can occur look HIGHLY uncomfortable to say the least and are often slow to heal.
