As we know, when Marino retired, he held every major passing record in the NFL. His single season passing record has not been bested in 16 years. He is a football icon. However he never won a superbowl.

Trent Dilfer was the poster child for suck during his Tampa years. However, in Baltimore, he had a chance to play for and win a SB on the back of one of the greatest defenses in NFL history. To be fair to Dilfer, he actually played well in the SB. He had a long career and struck lightning in a bottle when it mattered most.

Marino or Dilfer
single choice

Hmm .... lemme think .......

I'd take Marino because there is no way in hell I would ever put on that hideous purple uniform and help that (very long string of obscenities deleted) Modell win anything except a 1 way trip to hell to burn forever.

No brainer. Marino will go down in history knowing that he broke NFL records and revolutionized the game while being immortalized in the HOF. Dilfer will go down in history knowing that the ratbirds won that SB in spite of him, not because of him.

Why not?

This is no worse than at least 60-70% of the other polls that make their way in here. (probably including some of mine) At least it's an interesting premise ..... be one of the greatest players of all time and not have a ring, or be a pedestrian player and win a ring.

Isn't that the purpose of the K-9 Consensus ..... to poll these types of thing?

Ask trent d-bag if he'd trade careers with Marino. I'm sure he would.

Man, I hate that guy. I wouldn't care if he wouldn't constantly go out of his way to rip the browns and cleveland.

+1

Nobody could ever say anything to you about being terrible in Tampa.....he played well on the biggest stage ever and has a ring to prove it.

You can't say Marino's name without also saying, "never won a Super Bowl". Like Charles Barkley too. They are branded "losers".

I think a lot of people are allowing Dilfers connection with the Browns to influence their decision..

Marino

As far as the SuperBowl thing goes, your only as good as your team, and while he didn't win a SuperBowl he is recognized as one of the greatest QBs of all-time where as Dilfer may have a ring he's still regarded as a journeyman QB. It's not Marino's fault that the team around him was never good enough to win the Big One.

Marino... Hall of Fame career despite the lack of a championship. I would much rather be considered one of the best ever than just a so-so player who happened to be in the right place at the right time to win a Super Bowl.

The way I see it is this.

The whole point of being a QB is to win. Your goal from day one should be to win the superbowl.

I wonder if Dilfer wears his ring all the time, just so people wouldn't mistake him for an Average NFL QB that happens to work for ESPN now...

So Trent, who do you see this year in the Super Bowl?

Well you see, when I was in the Super Bowl...

You were in the Super Bowl?

Yeah, I won it in 2000...

You?

Yeah...

Won it?

Yes I am a Super Bowl winning Quarterback... AND YOU'LL NEVER TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME!

Marino. His best wasn't good enough for SB, but he proved himself in so many areas. Most players do not win the Big One. But he got the best of a bunch of people. Still would WANT ring, but lacking that, fame is part of the game, and it takes many forms which he owns.

Yeah, I'm sure Marino's goals never included winning a Super Bowl.

QBs get way too much credit when teams win and they get way too much of the blame when they lose. Yeah, QBs are important, but teams win Super Bowls. Not QBs by themselves.

Marino.

A ring is a team thing, but as an individual looking at your own career... Marino accomplished absolutely everything you could hope for. He set the standard and established himself as one of the greatest of all time.

Dilfer has a ring but his career and people's memory of him will be more of a Trivial Pursuit sort of thing... had he not played here and wasn't putting his mug on ESPN, he'd already be as forgotten as Akili Smith.

Truth that usually gets way overlooked.

I'll bet it's no more than 15-20%, encumbered by the fact that there have been so many repeaters.

I am 100% sure that I'd rather be known as a veteran journeyman who was very average but had a world championship, than a guy who had all of the records but didn't win a Super Bowl.

Dilfer can walk around the rest of his life and know he quarterbacked a championship NFL team.

And the rest of us will continue to say that any of us could have QB'd that team to an NFL championship.

It is indeed a shame Dan will always suffer this stupid argument. There are others "All-Time" greats that never won jack, but not very many. Matter of fact, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Sonny Jurgensen and Fran Tarkenton. Neither of them is even close to Bradshaw or Montana, let alone Starr, Unitas, Brady or Manning, in my opinion.

As for Dilfer, Frank Ryan has ONE.

Marino is the Better quarterback.

I might get Dilfer confused with Testaverde, they both played for the Buccanneers, and both played for the Ravens,

I'm not sure I can make a post into a poll anymore, so someone should start one.

Who was the Better Quarterback for the Browns,
Charlie Frye or
Brady Quinn?

I picked Marino because then I could punch Boomer Eisiason in the face when he punked him in the postgame show a few years ago (poking fun at Marino for never winning a ring because Boomers hand is so full of them?)

There's plenty of 3rd stingers with Superbowl rings who never saw the field during the season. So the ring isn't everything.

That HoF jacket, and name in the record books, and notoriety for the great things he did will outlive any SB trinket.

And aside from football fans, I bet if you walked up to an average person on the street and asked them who is Dan Marino, they could tell you, ask them who Trent Dilfer was and they'd problem ask if that's the guy from All My Children.

if i knew the end result? that'd be tough.

yeah, dilfer won the ring, although it was a one and done type of thing, the rest of his career he was horrible to mediocre.

marino was a top level guy the whole time. team was more dependent on im. better player. ring or no ring.

i know which i would pick if i didn't know the outcome...

i mean dilfer does have the ring, but even his comes with a yeah-but.

i think i would rather be an upper echelon player with a shot every year, then a one year wonder who flounders the rest of his career.

I don't feel bad for Marino at all for not getting a ring. Let's just remember, it was he who didn't want a more balanced attack.

Just clicking

For me, this is easy. Marino.

Marino is in the HOF already,,, I have doubts that Dilfer will ever be.

I wonder if Bernie Kosar would rather have played his entire career in Cleveland and never won a ring ..... or if he is happy that he won a ring, even though he had to go elsewhere as a backup? (even though he did contribute)

Cmon, I could see Dilfer getting in for free as part of a special event weekend.

Maybe a "worst QBs to ever win a Superbowl"?

That's a good question Ytown.. But still, if given the chance, hell, I'd rather of had Kosars career than Dilfers..
