So I've been looking into the Kindle lately because it has a bunch of textbooks on it that I use in class and I figured I'd break even after a couple semesters. So my question is, does anyone have the Kindle? If so do you have it with 3G or just Wi-Fi? What are your overall impressions? Do you like it? Can you use it easily in the sunlight or is there glare? Basically, is it worth it?

There are a couple of lengthy threads at whiteblaze.net (an Appalachian Trail hiking forum) from users. They were very informative.....to the point that I'm considering getting one. What really surprised me about the Kindle was the battery life, which is up to a month with daily use.

Got the 3G at Christmas and love it! No glare but I wish I could read it with lights out. (maybe i can and i just havnt figured it out)
Battery time is incredible, have not charged it yet.
Tons of free material, almost all of the classics for downloading.
Bookstore have got to be worried as their time is dwindling.

My dad got one for my mom for Christmas, and he got a case for it that has a retractable LED reading light on it that is powered by the Kindle battery. Not the most elegant solution but it works.

I have the nook (not color) and love it. It uses AT&T's network to download all the books. The one thing they don't tell you about it though is that it only lasts a week (~40 hours read time for me) on battery if you have it on airplane mode (ie no sending or receiving transmissions). Don't know if its the same for the kindle or not in that aspect. But honestly, there's really no need for the 3g or wireless aspects. You can download the books on a computer and transfer them over easy enough in just about the same amount of time. As for reading in the sunlight, there's no problems. Very easy. It's everything you've read about. However, if you're going for textbook reasons though, I'd highly suggest the ipad or the Kindle DX. The larger area would be more ideal for studying with less strain. Reading something like a textbook on a normal sized kindle or nook would be pretty tough as they're mostly geared toward reading novels. Even PDF reading on these are less than ideal, but still doable. Just a suggestion.

I purchased a Kindle for my wife when they came out with their 2nd version, it's pretty nice, Wifi only is what we have. Since then she talked me into getting her an iPad. Since the iPad has a Kindle app, the Kindle is now collecting dust, she loves that iPad.

Appreciate the suggestions from you and everyone else in this thread so far.
The reason I'm interested in the $139 Kindle instead of the DX which is nearly $400 is the price. Most of my textbooks these days (I'm a college Junior) are nonfiction books on specialized topics such as terrorism, etc. so they're not the "classic" textbooks, they're just nonfiction books and such. I'm a HUGE bibliophile and would use the Kindle for reading novels frequently so I figure this way I could save money on my school books and have a cool ereader which is convenient when I have breaks between classes and when I travel.
To those of you with ereaders, I was reading the screen is 6 inches. Is it easy to read on that screen? It seems to me that it's not that big a screen but maybe it works well as far as ereaders go.

I got a Pandigital Novel for $160, I think. It's wifi and has a browser and other cool extras. I'm very happy with it! I have the 7" screen, big enough to read, small enough to carry around easily. It does have a glare but if you're in class with it most of the time it won't matter. All I can say is do some serious homework. I like cnet reviews because they complain about every little stupid thing I would never even think about. One thing they do not tell you is research the book stores you'll be buying from!!! Pretty much the most important aspect imo.

Ahh, good deal. I don't see why a normal sized one shouldn't be ok then.

You can change the text size.
