http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/10/13/shawne-merriman-is-done-in-san-diego/

The Chargers will no longer wait for Shawne Merriman to get healthy.

The team placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday with a calf injury. They did so with a "minor-injury designation", which means its less than a six week injury. When Merriman is healthy, the team has to release him.

This will surely end Merriman's tumultuous six-year run in San Diego. He was the AP Rookie of the Year in 2005, and a first-team All Pro in 2006. Merriman has never truly rebounded from reconstructive surgery in 2008.

At the time, there was some concern Merriman's career could be over. He returned in 2009, but hasn't looked like the same guy during the times he's been healthy enough to play. Merriman only has five tackles in three games this season after missing much of training camp for a misguided holdout.

Merriman will find work again, but he's not close to getting a big contract until he proves he can be healthy and productive again.

So ... is this a guy that we look to add? Or don't touch him with a ten foot pole?

I haven't followed him all that closely, but he surely hasn't seemed like his old roided self.

Not sure I'd give him much of a second thought.

If i was Cleveland...I would sign him to a very modest 2 year contract when he gets released.

He again will be looking for a job going forward, and if you reward him with some kind of guaranteed money to hang around and get healthy, and then go with a very incentive laden contract. A contract based on playing time and production...

He's been pretty good in the past and could possibly be solid with time to just get healthy. It'd be a decent idea because he has had the pass rush ability and if he can rebound itd be wonderful.

Compare having a guy like him or someone like Titus Brown who doesnt get much snaps.

1. He's only been productive when he's been juicing.

2. Juicing is what caused his injury problems.

He's not good. If we somehow run into a rash of linebacker injuries and need an emergency pickup, he'd be about as good as we could get. Otherwise, pass....

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

I wouldn't mind bringing him in. Doubt it he would come here anyway.. but I would bring him in. Only because we know what he can bring. Drafting LB's high is so risky IMO. Most of them don't pan out to what you want them too.

On another note.. we do need to add another LB who can drop back in coverage. Roth is horrible. Benard is still learning. Fujita is good, but not sure how long he will continue to play.

Merriman has been toast ever since he tried to play on his blown up knee in the playoffs a few years ago.

Guess It's "Lights Out" for Merriman.

I wouldn't touch this guy with a 10-foot pole ... he's NOT the kind of guy you really want in the locker-room, and the production he's been putting out since his injury is marginal at best.

Bingo

The guy is nothing without steroids and is unable to stay healthy now that he's done juicing. I'll pass.

Heath issues, performance enhancing drugs, attitude issues, generally a jerk from all I've read...

I'd pass.....

My money is on one of two things

1. He goes to the Pats and somehow becomes an all pro stud again

2. He goes to the Bengals

Not really, but his ego, and steroids got in the way of his performance.

There has been a big drop off in production since he was busted for steroid use.

He will never see that second contract.

Maybe he can sponge off of Tila Tequila for some money.

I agree.

On a side note, the lack of steroids isn't what derailed Merriman. It's the injuries. He tested positive for steroids in 2006. Merriman then missed the first four games of the 2006 season and ended up with 17 sacks.

In 2007, probably Merriman's first non steroid aided year, he had 12.5 sacks.

What really screwed Merriman was himself. He played in the 2008 AFC Championship game with a torn PCL and LCL. Then played some more the next season until he finally had surgery in September of 2008.

If healthy Merriman could be a very good piece to this team. But it doesn't seem like he will ever be healthy again. But then again, he is only 26 years old.

And for those who say Merriman is a trouble maker, I don't agree. He has had one issue with Tila Tequila, who is pretty much insane, and those charges were dropped one week after the incident.

If the money was right, I would definitely sign Merriman and hope he would revert back to some of his old form. Like I said he's only 26 years old.

yes...bring this guy in and pay him to get healthy. Give him enough of a contract that he has time to recover the right way (not that hurry back to the lineup and play hurt like in SD)

Pay him to get healthy, and have him still paid to play while healthy. The man needs the rest of this year and some of the offseason to just watch, heal, and get his body ready to play.

Then he can make a Jason Giambi like return to sports. Remember, he was steroids, injuries, yankee, time off, return, glory.

The best part about Merriman is that he's younger than Giambi ever was...yes he has been injured, but its not injuries like Winslow, its not going to make him worse, hes just played too soon because of the way SD was pushing for him to be there.

Pay the man to get healthy...then pay the man to play, and make his contract enough to that he's willing to play, and add incentives that can really boost his pay...not games per year, but percent of snaps when he's healthy, and production while healthy.

I would love to see him hungry ... but if we give him a chance ... let him be a "star" linebacker ... its the small reclamation projects that *COULD* help us a lot ...

Imagine Next year having a Linebacking core of a fairly healthy Merriman, Bernard, Roth? Gocong? do we still have DQwell? Trusnik and Maiva for depth? Plus they should have Rubin on the D line with (hopefully) Coleman, Rogers, Robaire and then insert any "stud" Dlineman if we can address it early in the draft ... that would look nice as pressure with our recently revamped secondary only gettin better with experience..
