So I was recently shown this game, Cave Story, and I've become addicted to it. If I could compare it to another game, the closest are probably the classic Metroid games.

http://www.psychoholiday.com/uploader/files/27/cavestorypcENG.rar If you don't like playing in fullscreen, you can set it to windowed in Doconfig.exe. If you find yourself unable to select anything once at the menu, Ctrl-Alt-Del out and uncheck "Use Gamepad" in the confug file.
I'm not all the way done yet, so I can't help you much. I really recommend playing through on your own, but if you're really stuck, there's some walkthroughs in the first link.
