This past July, LeBron James and his management company, LRMR, announced his intention to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh with the Miami Heat during an hour-long special on ESPN. Close to 10 million people tuned in to watch the announcement, which was widely panned as a self-serving effort to attract attention.

On Wednesday, both James and Maverick Carter, a childhood friend who also serves as LRMR's CEO, were interviewed by CNN's Soledad O'Brien to discuss "The Decision." In the middle of Wednesday's interview, O'Brien posed a question about the backlash that followed James' announcement: "Do you think there's a role that race plays in this?"

James responded to O'Brien by saying, "I think so at times. It's always, you know, a race factor."

Carter added, "It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written for sure."

But during the interview, James and Carter strongly defended the manner in which James made his announcement by pointing out the $3 million the show raised for the Boys & Girls Club of America.

"For me to have an opportunity to give back to the Boys & Girls Club of America, that I would never change that," James said. "And if I have to take heat to give back to kids, I would do it the same way every single time."

Frank Sanchez, V.P. of the Boys & Girls Club of America also chimed in, "LeBron was using a significant moment in time to benefit young people. And a lot of people can take those opportunities and make it about them. He really was -- his goal was to make it about kids and make it about giving opportunities for kids."

While Carter noted in the interview "the execution could have been a little better and I take some of the blame for that," he does believe that it was done for a good cause, and race definitely played a factor in the backlash and its lingering effects. Following "The Decision," James has been accused of being egocentric by promoting himself on the special, and criticized by fans, several Hall of Fame players and several coaches and executives around the league for taking an alleged easier route to a championship by joining two other superstars as opposed to leading a team on his own.

In response, James noted on Twitter that he's making a list of those who have criticized him. When asked to explain what he meant by that, Carter spoke up for his friend.

"That means the fuel that he'll be playing with will be super duper duper premium," he said. "He usually plays with super premium. This year, that's a little higher grade of fuel."

I'm tired of LBJ, but that was a great quote from the 'CEO'.

There I fixed it for Maverick.

I don't usually wish personal injury on any player ......

But I hope he busts his leg and jaw in week 1 and can never speak and can never play ever again.

What an ass.

The guy makes billions of dollars. If he wanted the Boys and Girls Clubs to have some money, he could have written a check and never have even missed the amount they got.

Also, notice how no one talks about how much HE made off of the "Decision" crapfest? He didn't donate anywhere near 100% to the Boys and Girls Club ...... and his company got the rest.

... off! I'm glad the Boys and Girls Club of America got a piece, but that was what, a quarter of the proceeds from the special at most? I'm over the exaggeration of compassion because that mega multi-millionaire still banked most of it and clearly used those kids as a stage prop to bolster his PR in the face of a tacky, self-absorbed, scripted ESPN (Egotistical Star Promotion Nuissance) special. There was zero interaction with those kids. How awkward and transparent can you really get?

1.) No one is buying it, dude. You're a self-serving narcissist.
2.) What the hell else would the VP say? He's a patsy along for the ride.

His new PR/Marketing team has been way too successful in information management and spin control...

That being said, the slightest mention of race as a legit cause of the backlash over the Lebacle is weak and unsupported. Like Top pointed out: Magic, Jordan, Barkley, etc. They racist, too?

Those are real articulate, well-expanded, and supported responses, guys.

Ok LeBron.. How about this... How about you just donate money to the Boys & Girls Club instead of "hiring" them to act as human shields?

Wow. It sounds like an excuse - the old "hey, it's not me - it's my race" thing.

Oddly enough, with his Decision, he ticked off millions of people. Now, attempting to blame it, at least in part, on his race, he will tick off even more people. He just doesn't get it.

It's not THAT he made a decision, it's HOW he announced the decision.

I'll admit it. I was mad at Lebron just because he's black.

I mean, I was perfectly fine with the backstabbing, the narcissism, and all that. That sat perfectly fine with me.

But boy, it just makes me so mad that he's black!

Bill Simmons tweet today was pretty good:

Idea for LeBron's next tweet: "FYI: I'm going to say something stupendously dumb 2-3X per week. So get psyched for that."

sad but true. i love the nba, but i keep saying that the league is 2 or 3 moves away from becoming a 3 team league that nobody cares for. kinda like baseball except worse. the route they are going down, there won't even be a minnesota twins in the nba.

i will watch now, but i really think if melo and paul end up in new york, that it's pretty much gonna be knicks, bulls, boston, miami, and the lakers.

the thing that sucks is that towns like portland and salt lake are gonna get shut out and those people truly love their bball, okc is becoming that way too. that's all they have.

orlando will probably get broken up, even if they don't they can't compete with the super teams.

in fact, much worse. in MLB the one saving grace is that if you draft well, you can hoard service years and plug youngsters into the MLB. well-run teams like the Twins can compete often using that model and even not as well run teams like the Padres, Reds, and yes, Indians can compete from time to time by pushing their better prospects service years close together to make a couple runs.

plus, there is a much bigger randomization factor in baseball. noone going into this season would have had much hope for SD, Cinci, SF, Atlanta, or Texas based on last year, but they are all in the race for the playoffs (TB also had a big rebound from last year but that was largely expected as they got hit by injuries last year)

The $5 million is still a mystery that no news outlet is reporting. I hate that especially after his latest comment about how he'll always take the negativity for donating to children. Guy is clueless.

I really wish the Cavs didn't S&T him to heat.

do you know what would raise money for the boys and girls club? Have a lottery where the winner gets to suit up for the cavs for one play and gets to foul Lebron Flagrant 2. How many of you would pay to punch that dude in the privates as he dunks on you?

On top of this statement, we also need to look back at Cleveland sports history, Jim Thome.

Thome was about as white as they come and he sure caught hell for leaving Cleveland too. Remember the whole "Rip the shirt off my back" charade. He wasn't even at the superstar level that Lebron was and still caught hell. He didn't even return to Cleveland for several years after the wounds healed in Cleveland and still got a pretty good booing.

Yes LeBron, we are Cleveland fans and only backlash at black athletes who betray us.

the race thing is an excuse that fits into LBJs moves..

Let's face it,, by moving to the heat, he didn't do anything wrong. it was well within his rights to do so,, Superstar players from years ago say they wouldn't have done it, but that's them,, not LBJ

(I still say that there was a deal to pull this off put together in the back room with the son of the Heats owner)

So he had the right to do what he did.

My Problem with "the decision" is the dirt that was flung at the City of Cleveland, the Fans of the Cavs and LBJ, the owner that paid him a handsome salary, His teammates etc etc.

This is the first time I had heard that money for Boys and Girls clubs was involved,, and while I find that commendable, you don't throw dirt on one group that's been loyal to you in order to help another.

that's idiotic.. horrible business move..

LBJ has an estimates worth of something like 200million.. he couldn't just give them 3 million?

it would have still given them the money, and it wouldn't have kicked dirt in the town that showed him nothing but love.

RACE has nothing to do with it.. NOTHING.. to say that it did is offensive....

Really? Racism is the reason for backlash?

What an idiot!

With the outlandish things people that leave Cleveland end up saying about Cleveland the rest of the country must Ohioans are total trash. The sad thing is that the stuff they say is so far off base it's not even funny. Maybe they should take the tiem to actually get to know their fan base.

Before it all went down, I was one of the people saying I'd still watch the NBA if he left.

But the way it's all went down, the direction the league is headed in and comments like this are turning me off even more. I'll probably be turning most of my attention back to the college game in the winter, it's a purer form of the game anyway.

Yep. To me, skin color is the most important trait to take into consideration when judging moral character. If he weren't black, I might let the rest slide. Same with Obama, Al Sharpton and Louis Farrakhan. If they weren't black, I'd be on all of their bandwagons.

I never heard anyone rip John Stockton or Larry Bird when they took out an hour on ESPN to tell their team and city to screw off.
