Not just us, but football players in general. Watching games I see a back, receiver, running down the field and the first thing I see alot is the arm swipe, then the wrap up. Most of the time this does not work and the ball carrier gets a few extra yards because of it.

I can see if it needs to be done meaning late in the game, you need a turnover. But just to do it? Why give up those extra yards. Wrap the guy up already. I hate to see it when it's not absolutely needed.

They are coached to do that.

They are also coached to make sure of the tackle.

However, tackles don't make the headlines/highlights. Causing a fumble does make the highlights.

Consequently, the "me me me" guys in the nfl want to make the highlights, and tackling is secondary to that.

It's a shame really, my first instinct would be to just bring the ball carrier down as fast as possible unless you need to try and strip like I mentioned before. This stuff blows my mind.

And what I'm saying is, in the nfl, my opinion is it's a "make the highlight reel" kind of thing. Watch the tackles - when they are made - there's no "technique" involved - it's "make a big hit".

Hit, with your head up, and wrap? Right.

Hit with your head up... To bad instincts tend to want us to drop the head...So many concussions and injuries because of that... Go back to Leather helmets...This high tech helmets makes these guys go in head first....Thinking they are going to protect them...

I'm doing good buddy. I stayed away from the board for awhile because I hated all the political talk all the time in the tailgate lot, but hey, just accept it. It is what it is.

Anyway, good to see you again. You gonna be in the muni soon? I stayed away on Sunday not knowing what the traffic would be like, I had a good feeling they would be lined up on the shoreway and E 9th.

Been trying to get up to the muni...ever since I took my oldest daughter up to the Steeler game.. and we got yelled at by Browns fans to sit down... cheering for the team that is... and when we turned around we saw Steeler fans waving them nasty butt wipes.. and not a word was said to them...

Kinda lost my excitement for the stadium... I can stay home and have more fun... And was never disrespectful... Hell I sat with Peen alot... always behaved......

I understand. I have season tix and don't want to go up there sometimes. It's just not fun anymore. Will always be a fan, but the atmosphere in the stadium has lost it's edge. It's just not the same.

That is a damn shame. The people telling you to sit down would have been wearing beer at Muni.

I had this same problem a few years back against Indy. The Browns are so dead set on creating a "family" environment that they are risking alienating their passionate fans. The game I was at had playoff implications (maybe it wasn't a few years then, must have been 2002), and my group was standing and making noise on big 3rd downs (no profanity). It actually went so far as ushers asking us to sit b/c there was a group behind us who didn't want to stand.

IMO, if you want to watch the game sitting down in quiet, that is what TV's are for. You don't go to a football game to chit chat and have tea.

I guess I'm the other way. I have season tix, and I don't want to go sometimes because of the loudmouth drunk idiots.

Now, I will never yell at anyone for standing and cheering. And I fully expect some profanity. But the drunken idiots getting in fights, taunting other teams' fans (not good natured stuff, but brutal stuff), they ruin it for me.

I don't need it to be G rated. But I don't need it to be NC-17, either.

The second players job is to go for the strip. The first player should always go for the tackle. If you see it the other way, then the player is not doing it right.

Teaching the strip is part of the game, but it should only be done when the carrier has someone else on him to make the tackle.

That's kind of what I thought, too.

Or, when the game is on the line and just tackling the guy won't do it. Like if you're losing way late in the game and the only hope you have is a turnover.

I agree, but in this ESPN Sunday Highlights generation, the guy who gets the strip gets the glory.

That is why I like Joe Haden....he goes for tackles.

Ward seems to be the same.....and those are the guys who in the long run are going to make the grade while some of the others move in to oblivion.

The players know there are certain situations to go for the strip, and certain situations to go for the hit first...

If a ball carrier gets the first down already... the player goes for the strip...
If it's 3rd and short.. the player goes for the tackle.. simple.
