We heard all offseason about how great it was that the whole coaching staff remained intact. We saw all preseason how Jake was making great decisions and how disciplined the team was. Why shouldn't we expect them to be ready?
1. You were "told" by the media hype. Same BS, different season. It happens every year and some people buy into it year after year.
But when you look at things realisticly pre-season has never been a true baromoter of the season at all. You may find some examples that it does, but overall pre-season has little to nothing to do with regular season.
2. Anyone who thought Jake would turn from the ugly duckling he was last year into a swan this year must of had a leap of faith I sure wasn't willing to jump to.
3. Keeping the same system in place with the same coaching staff is a great thing. One problem though, how many starters on this years roster were starters from last years roster? How many players currently on the field weren't playing here last year?
So keeping the coaching staff in place is wonderful. Having the same system in place to help form some continuity is fine. But you have a lot of players on the field who are still new to that system.
Add in the youth. We have a rookie CB, a rookie S just in our secondary. You don't think there will be a learning curve?
Everyone is entitled to get excited if they wish. Anyone has the choice whether they believe the pre-season media hype year after year. Feel free.
I saw a QB we aquired that gave me much cause for concern. I saw a lot of above average talent added into a new system. I knew even with the addition of Pashos a very suspect right side of our OL. I saw no real #1 WR and that our WR core would be another point of weakness. I saw a great influx of talent in our secondary but two rookie starters who would have growing pains.
So I believed my eyes and looked at the situation without the media hype and realisticly compared it to other similar scenarios.
What I believe is that this team will look better week after week. That we have the talent assembled to win. But at first? They have to figure out what this group can and can not do. What will be our strengths and weaknesses?
You can't find that out completly in pre-season. It doesn't happen that way. What won't happen? It won't take 12 weeks to sort it all out. The veterans will adjust quickly. The rookies, both Haden and Ward play at a high level so I feel the rookie growing pains will not be a great deterrant to their success.
I believe in 4-6 weeks we will be a much better team that will find its nitch. But to expect things to be tight out of the gate to me would be closing your eyes and believing all the "feel good" stories the media feeds us on an annual basis.
You saw a team that looked good for one half then kind of imploded. Soon we will be seeing them putting four quarters together. But to expect that week 1? Well I think that it was obviously being overly optimistic wouldn't you say? I mean we have the evidence in to make that statement, right?

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

That's because in the south we use real butter and we take things with fat on them and cook them in bacon grease..

On defense I count 7 of 12 (I include the NB, which seems to be Adams, because a NB plays as much as a starter nowadays)...only Ward and Haden are new starters. Fujita and Brown are proven vets from winning teams. Gocong is starting now but could go to the bench once DQwell is back
On O we only had Delhomme, Hillis and Watson new starters..so overall, we mostly have 5-6 proven vets and 2 high draft choices as new starters, that's not much more/or different from other teams imho but glad to read you're still on your "lowered expectations" propganda tour....it's a process, right? You bought it hook line and sinker, congrats.

I disagree with that post because while you're correct that, numbers wise, there wasn't much of a change, the few guys we did bring in (I'm talking about the offense), are deep, impactful changes.
QB - You're not going to convince anyone that changing from Quinnderson to JD and Seneca is a profound change on this offense (and I think most would say it's for the better).
Watson - The guy is a solid tight end who can catch and block. Sadly, this is a profound change from what we had last year. He's the new Heiden
Hillis - The guy is a battering ram. Lining him up behind Vickers is a critical new wrinkle to our offense.
JD and, to a lesser extent Watson, bring leadership to the table as well. Especially for the QB position, this is a huge upgrade for us. Not many guys are different, but the change is still big.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

If you consider from the end of last year to now, your numbers are pretty much on.. but if you go from this time last year to now.. add in Roth and Moore and Stuckey....

Yes, I'm not from the instant gratification generation that thinks everything can be microwaved. In case you missed it, 7 out of 12 is 1 less than half.

jc,
My level is just meh. The beginning of a season always brings new hope but after these two games...
The crowd reaction is the same, I was at the game yesterday and after kc got the first to seal the win the crowd didn't get mad, I didn't hear any get po'd, it was just like oh well, let's go and started their way out of the stadium.
The long walk down the ramps from the uppers was just people wanting to go home. Quietly walking, just talking and such much like going home from a family reunion or something.
Not a big deal anymore that we lost. Just go about your business. We expect this.
How in the world can you fix something... If you don't know how it's supposed to work?

... and much of the conversation I heard on the way out centered around the concept of "I'm DONE with this." Sad to say, even some of the diehards in my section were saying they weren't sure how much longer they could take plunking down the money for tickets and getting so little enjoyment out of going to CBS on Sundays. Very disheartening.

The first two games were exicting the first half butin the end we still lost two "easy" wins by shooting ourselves in the foot. I'm just about ready to cancel my DirecTV.

At this point, very little in Cleveland Browns football. The DVR will be busy while I'm watching the Green Bay Packers play NFL football. What the Browns are playing is not really identifiable at this point. I would have more fun doing this than watching the Browns. LMAO
After 55 years, I'm walking away from this dumpster fire. Good luck to everyone who continues to hang on. You'll need it.

Yep...I gave up 2 years ago. They continue to call me offering to give me back my seats and my PSL investment if I just buy the tickets. I'm sorry, the donation of my time and money are over. 6 hours driving, parking, beer, food and then maybe getting tossed because some tattletale reports that I'm standing up too much, being too loud or getting pissed off and throwing out an occasional F bomb? WTF ever. So much for home field advantage. You want quiet and polite? Go to a damn theater you losers. You don't want F bombs? Sit in the family section or stay home. I'm sorry, but that's life as an NFL fan. CBS has become a total pussified joke. Entertainment value? Give me a break. It's ZERO. I will stay home, have more fun and spend less money.

I'm in the denial stage right now.
I'm begining to convince myself that we will win this game this weekend against the Rats.
The thing is, the Rats haven't exactly lit up the scoreboard this year. Joe Flacid is coming off a horrible game and they are a bit on their heels. If we can somehow continue to play after halftime, I think we win. And if we can surprise them with a couple of scores in the first half (which we've been able to do this year), THEY may crumble under the pressure.
They have all the pressure on them. We have none. NOBODY is expecting us to even compete, not even our own fanbase. And most of our troubles have been self inflicted which, as a buddy wisely told me, are much easier to correct than a straight-up lack of talent.
Call me nuts, but I think we win. So I'm excited.
